Darius Rucker – Wagon Wheel (Lyrics)

Inspiration Behind Wagon Wheel:

Wagon Wheel was inspired by his daughter’s talent show at her school. This rendition rekindled Rucker’s appreciation for Bob Dylan’s demo that was completed by Ketch Secor of the Old Crow Medicine Show. Upon hearing the faculty band perform “Wagon Wheel,” Darius turned to his wife saying, “I need to cut this song.” This set into motion Rucker’s version of Wagon Wheel.

Biblical Application:

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about, Genesis 22:1-3.

Exegesis of Wagon Wheel:

Heading down south to the land of the pines
I’m thumbing my way into North Caroline
Staring up the road and pray to God I see headlights
I made it down the coast in 17 hours
Picking me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I’m a-hoping for Raleigh, I can see my baby tonight

Traveling south to North Carolina. Daruis is driving all night to avoid traffic, hoping he doesn’t fall asleep. After 17 hours in a car, Darius stops off to pick up flowers. Darius is driving home to see his wife and or newborn child.

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel
Rock me, mama, any way you feel
Hey, mama, rock me
Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain
Rock me, mama, like a southbound train
Hey, mama, rock me

Darius transitions from his version to the original chorus. It appears to be a mother is holding and rocking a newborn baby. A train is compared with a wagon wheel, impacted by the weather.

Running from the cold up in New England
I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time string band
My baby plays the guitar, I pick a banjo now
Oh, north-country winters keep a-getting me down
Lost my money playing poker, so I had to leave town
But I ain’t turning back to living that old life no more

Since Darius was born in South Carolina, this is either about Bob Dylan or Ketch Secor. While Dylan was born in Minnesota, this stanza could be about him or another musician who learned to play a guitar early on. Gambling stalled his career initially.

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel

Rock me, mama, any way you feel
Hey, mama, rock me
Yeah, rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain
Rock me, mama, like a southbound train
Hey, mama, rock me

The chorus is repeated. There is something comforting about being held and rocked. The child inside doesn’t care how he is rocked, as long as he is held by his mom.

Walking to the south out of Roanoke
I caught a trucker out of Philly, had a nice long toke
But he’s a-headed west from the Cumberland gap
To Johnson City, Tennessee
And I got to get a move on before the sun
I hear my baby calling my name, and I know that she’s the only one
And if I die in Raleigh, at least I will die free

Hitch hiking led to a pleasant ride in Virginia and Tennessee. Then a call from his girlfriend or wife leads him back to North Carolina.

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel

Oh, rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain
Rock me, mama, like a southbound train
Hey, hey, mama, rock me, oh

If you haven’t been on a horse and carriage before, it’s hard to get a sense for the opening of this chorus. Yet, being held by a parent provides a sense of security within a child.

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel
Rock me, mama, any way you feel (oh, I wanna feel)
Hey, hey, mama, rock me
Mama, rock me, mama, rock me
Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain (oh)
Rock me, mama, like a southbound train

You can rock me, rock me

The final chorus made me visualize a mother on her front porch, sitting in a rocking chair, rocking a child back to sleep.

Final Thoughts:

The Wagon Wheel takes me back to the first time I rode on a horse and carriage in Williamsburg, Virginia. Yet, growing up in Delaware, every house had a front porch where you would sit and talk every evening in the summer. Nearly every porch had at least one rocking chair. These are the memories that came racing back to my mind as I listened to Wagon Wheels.

Brad Paisley – American Saturday Night (Official Video)

Inspiration Behind American Saturday Night:

American Saturday Night was a collaboration between Ashley Gorley, Kelley Lovelace and Brad Paisley. The goal of this song was to create a sing along anthem to celebrate the cultural melting pot of the United States. American Saturday Night marked a shift in Paisley’s earlier comedic style toward a clever, up-tempo country sound.

Biblical Application:

These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you, Deuteronomy 6:1-3.

She’s got Brazilian leather boots on the pedal of her German car

You can buy almost anything in America. Meanwhile, you have the freedom to listen to the music that you enjoy. Apparently, her choice of music is international, but she is simply going across town to meet her boyfriend.

And it’s a French kiss, Italian ice
Spanish moss in the moonlight (whoa-oh-oh-oh)
Just another American Saturday night

Highlights from their date, ending with a romantic setting.

There’s a big toga party tonight down at Delta Chi
They got Canadian bacon on their pizza pie
They got a cooler full of cold Coronas and Amstel Light
It’s like we’re all livin’ in a big old cup
Just fire up the blender, mix it all up

On campus there is another celebration. The final portion of this stanza sums up America’s ability to embrace, blend and mix up multiple cultures and nationalities.

Margaritas in the moonlight (whoa-oh-oh-oh)
Just another American Saturday night

Back to the chorus which adds French and Italian to highlight America’s melting pot.

And you know everywhere has something they’re known for
Although usually it washes up on our shores
My great-great-great-granddaddy stepped off of that ship
I bet he never ever dreamed we’d have all this

America is a place where immigrants flocked to, beginning a new life. While every country has their own special foods and traditions, this country is filled with individuals from all over the world. Despite leaving their former countries, you still have access to so many things from outside of America.

You know everywhere has something they’re known for
Although usually it washes up on our shores
A little Italy and Chinatown sittin’ there side by side
Live from New York (it’s Saturday night)

This stanza is repeated from earlier with the final 2 lines different. If you want to experience certain foods or towns, large cities like New York have everything available for you on any Saturday night.

Spanish moss in the moonlight (whoa-oh-oh-oh)
Just another American, I’m just another American
And it’s just another American Saturday night

A final glimpse of what you might experience while out on a date in America on a Saturday night.

Final Thoughts:

While visiting states on vacation over the years, there are certain chain convenience stores, gas stations and restaurants that only exist is specific areas of this country. Subsequently, whenever I go on vacation, there are a few establishments that I must visit at least once to get my fix. These are the Diners, Drive ins and Dives that make small towns stand out. Before the summer ends, don’t forget to visit one of these special places in America.

Sam Cooke – A Change Is Gonna Come (Official Lyric Video)

Inspiration Behind Change is Gonna Come:

Change is Gonna Come was a response to the racial tensions and injustices that were prevalent in the United States in 1963. Following the release of Change is Gonna Come, this song has become an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement. With the rise of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Sam was full of belief, hope and faith that change will come in the near future.

Biblical Application:

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me, Psalm 51:10-12.

Exegesis of Change is Gonna Come:

I was born by the river
In a little tent
Oh, and just like the river, I’ve been running
Ever since

Sam didn’t have much when she was born. Yet, like a flowing river, she kept moving downstream.

It’s been a long
A long time coming, but I know
A change gon’ come
Oh yes, it will

There were many things that Sam saw or witnessed that she didn’t think was fair. Yet, deep down inside, she believed that change would happen sometime in the future.

It’s been too hard living
But I’m afraid to die
‘Cause I don’t know what’s up there
Beyond the sky

Growing up as a black woman in America has been tough. Yet, she’s not ready to die, unsure of her eternal destiny.

It’s been a long
A long time coming, but I know
A change gon’ come
Oh yes, it will

Sam thought that things would have improved by now, but she hasn’t lost hope for Civil Rights to become a reality.

I go to the movie
And I go downtown

Sam still goes into town to watch movies.

And somebody keep telling me
“Don’t hang around”

Despite comments about being unwanted around town, this didn’t stop her from living.

It’s been a long
A long time coming, but I know
A change gon’ come
Oh yes, it will

There is no doubt in Sam’s mind that Civil Right for African Americans will come soon.

Then, I go to my brother
And I say, “Brother, help me, please”
But he winds up knockin’ me
Back down on my knees, oh

However, maintaining hope wasn’t easy, physically knocked down after asking for help.

There been times that I thought
I couldn’t last for long
But now, I think I’m able
To carry on

Sam also lost hope in the darkest times of uncivil acts against her. But the rise of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was enough to help her tarry on with life.

It’s been a long
A long time coming, but I know
A change gon’ come
Oh yes, it will

The numerous trials and tribulations that Sam endured could not hold her down for long as her belief for change came.

Final Thoughts:

The melody of Change is Gonna Come reminds me of some of the old hymns that I sung in church growing up. Spending 3 years attending public school in inner city Wilmington, Delaware, I came face to face with poverty. Although Sam doesn’t mention being a woman of faith, she persevered like Queen Esther in the Old Testament. Change is Gonna Come serves as a reminder of the past and provides hope that current and future issues will be resolved.

Dixie Chicks – Wide Open Spaces (Lyrics)

Inspiration Behind Wide Open Spaces:

 Susan Gibson was studying forestry at the University of Montana when she wrote Wide Open Spaces. Frequent family trips from Amarillo, Texas to Missoula, Montana conceived the concept of Wide Open Spaces.  After jotting down lyrics in a notebook over the years, Susan’s mom sent this journal to her in college as part of a care package. Upon glancing over the words inside, Wide Open Spaces was spawn.

Biblical Application:

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, Exodus 3:7-8.

Exegesis of Wide Open Spaces:

Who doesn’t know what I’m talking about?
Who’s never left home? Who’s never struck out?
To find a dream and a life of their own
A place in the clouds, a foundation of stone

A song about traveling, watching the landscape as her parents’ drive. These trips led Susan to attend college in Montana. She followed her dream, searching for a solid foundation.

Many precede and many will follow
A young girl’s dreams no longer hollow
It takes the shape of a place out West
But what it holds for her, she hasn’t yet guessed

Susan is trying to make something out of her life as her dreams take shape in Montana. Still waiting for confirmation.

She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes

This is what Susan believes she needs to be successful. New faces with high stakes to aim for.

She traveled this road as a child
Wide-eyed and grinning, she never tired
But now she won’t be coming back with the rest
If these are life’s lessons, she’ll take this test

Susan is leaving home in Texas to follow her dream in Montana. Various life lessons has led her down this path.

She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes

Perhaps a reference to forestry, clear cutting areas so that new trees can be planted.

She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes
She knows the high stakes

Susan enjoys meeting new people. She also realizes that responsibilities that come with her dream.

And as her folks drive away, her dad yells, “Check the oil!”
Mom stares out the window and says, “I’m leavin’ my girl”
She said, “It didn’t seem like that long ago”
When she stood there and let her own folks know

A reference to dropping their girl off at college or moving away for good after graduating.

She needed wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes

The chorus repeats itself, explaining the environment Susan is searching for.

She knows the highest stakes
She knows the highest stakes (wide open spaces)
She knows the highest stakes
She knows the highest stakes (wide open spaces)

The stakes are high as Susan risks failure to achieve her dream in life.

Final Thoughts:

I took a winter semester off in college to travel the country, staying with 2 close friends from high school. I was able to see what life had to offer before I graduated from college. I went skiing out west and hung out in Dallas, providing an idea of where I wanted to live after college. As someone who loves to travel, I can’t get enough of wide open spaces driving along the interstate. Nature can be inspirational like it was for Susan.

The Message Behind the Music-July 19

Philadelphia Freedom

Inspirational Philadelphia Freedom:

 Elton John and Bernie Taupin were on the road between recording sessions in the summer of 1974. These sessions included Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy when Elton John suddenly felt compelled to write a song for Billy Jean King. This tennis legend began playing team tennis so when she asked Elton what he wanted to call this song Elton named this tune after her team the Philadelphia Freedom.

Biblical Application:

For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. 16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor, 1 Peter 2:15-17.

Exegesis of Philadelphia Freedom:

I used to be a rolling stone, you know
If a cause was right
I’d leave, to find the answer on the road

Billy Jean King was a rock, standing up for what she believed was a right cause. I’m not sure if Elton is comparing Billy to Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz or that Billy was diligent in finding the answers to her questions in life.

I used to be a heart beatin’ for someone
But the times have changed
The less I say, the more my work gets done

In her younger years, Billy fought for others. Now older and wiser, her actions speak louder than words.

‘Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom
From the day that I was born, I’ve waved the flag
Philadelphia freedom took me knee-high to a man, yeah
Gave me peace of mind my daddy never had

Playing team tennis is her new passion in life. It’s unclear what flag Elton is referring to. Billy Jean competed in the battle of the sexes, defeating Boddy Riggs on national television. This victory led to peace and sense of pride.

The chorus reflects this victory. Proving that women were capable athletes who could defeat men. This was a shining moment for Billy.

Billy didn’t have to prove herself anymore.

People have different interests which may result in city life or staying near family.

Billy likes being independent. However, sometimes the will of freedom can be overwhelming.

The battle of the sexes match changed Billy Jean’s life for the better.

According to Elton John, this was one of the best times in Nilly Jean’s career, playing with a new appreciation for tennis.

Final Thoughts:

The Battle of the Sexes was a popular show on ABC Wide World of Sports. However, after the 1973 match in the Houston Astrodome with over 50 million viewers, female professional athletes began to receive the respect that they were due. When I was in high school, I trained with a former Olympian Vicki Huber who weekly blew away most of the male runners on the track. When an athlete has special talents, the creme rises to the top.

U.S.A. For Africa – We Are the World

Inspiration Behind We Are the World:

More than 45 artists, bands, singers and songwriters gathered to raise funds for the charity USA for Africa. This collaboration conceived We Are the World, one of the greatest projects ever by the music industry. After selling over 800,000 copies of We Are the World in 3 days, USA for Africa raised more than $60 million for famine relief. If this type of unity existed today, I can only imagine what would be accomplished.

Biblical Application:

“Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. 34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. 35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” – Acts 20:32-35

Exegesis of We Are the World:

The greatest gift of all

Everyone needs a helping hand from time to time. Following extreme conditions, a natural disaster, or unforeseen events, the world must come together to provide aid and support. Especially, when this is a matter of life and death.

And the truth, you know love is all we need

Ignoring this need by doing nothing won’t make this problem go away. The quicker people act, the better off the suffering will be. Start viewing any crisis as an extended part of God’s family. Like the Bible states, you will know true followers of Jesus by their love.

Don’t live your life focused on your own life. Stop, take a look around and see who needs your help.

Final Thoughts:

My neighbor had tickets to watch Live Aid at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Since the temperature was 96 degrees with high humidity, I declined this offer. As a high school junior at the time, I didn’t realize the impact that this event would make. Instead, I watched from the luxuries of air conditioning at home. I do regret missing this amazing concert that has gone down in the annuals of music history.

Chuck Berry Back In The USA

Inspiration Behind Back in the USA:

Chuck Berry was on tour in Australia when he returned to the United States. While landing in America, Chuck developed a deep appreciation for being back home. The cities mentioned in Back in the USA is where Chuck performed. This connection with certain places made Berry feel like he was back home in his native country. Berry’s song served as the inspiration for the Beatles song Back in the USSR.

Final Thoughts:

I spent the last few days of my summer vacation in Canada. While each country has its own unique culture and places, returning this past week made me happy to return to the United States. Living in a small town just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, I missed living in a town without traffic lights. Meanwhile, I couldn’t wait to hang out at my favorite establishments and pick up my favorite foods at the local grocery store. These are just a few of the things Americans take for granted while living in the USA.

Johnny Cash – Ragged Old Flag (Official Audio)

Inspiration Behind Ragged Old Flag:

The lyrics to Ragged Old Flag were conceived during the Vietnam War when political tensions reached a peak due to President Nixon’s Watergate scandal. After supporting Nixon, Johnny Cash reflected upon how this war and presidency was tearing America apart. Subsequently, Cash used Ragged Old Flag as a history lesson with the hope of reigniting faith in the country and flag that he loved. This song reads like a story about past battles and wars.

Biblical Application:

The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.” Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings! – Acts 5:27-29.

Exegesis of Ragged Old Flag:

I walked through a county courthouse square
On a park bench, an old man was sittin’ there.
I said, “Your old court house is kinda run down,
He said, “Naw, it’ll do for our little town”.
I said, “Your old flag pole is leaned a little bit,
And that’s a ragged old flag you got hangin’ on it”.
He said, “Have a seat”, and I sat down,
“Is this the first time you’ve been to our little town”
I said, “I think it is”
He said “I don’t like to brag, but we’re kinda proud of that ragged old flag”

While on vacation Johnny notices a local sitting on a park bench. After making an initial observation, the local explains that old isn’t necessarily run down. Johnny makes another comment about an old flag hanging from a leaning pole. This local asks Johnny to sit down, wanting to explain the history about this town and flag.

You see, we got a little hole in that flag there
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
And It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it
Writing “Say Can You See”
It got a bad rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson
Tugging at it’s seams.
And it almost fell at the Alamo
Beside the Texas flag,
But she waved on though.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville,
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on that ragged old flag

This man turns into a historian, using past events to reveal how this ragged old flag got in this current condition. From the Revolutionary to Civil War, this flag has seen significant battles waged. When you add the windy conditions, this is the how this flag has become ragged.

She turned blood red in World War II
She hung limp, and low, a time or two
She was in Korea, Vietnam, she went where she was sent

The American flag is used as a background for World War I and II. From Korea to Vietnam, American soldiers have been sent to defend and support freedom. This serves as an introduction to modern times as people have lost faith in the leaders of this country. The Ragged Old Flag is symbolic of American values which have been challenged and tested over the last 200 years when this was written. The old man believes that America still has a bright future.

So we raise her up every morning
And we take her down every night,
We don’t let her touch the ground,
And we fold her up right.
On a second thought
I do like to brag
‘Cause I’m mighty proud of that ragged old flag

This is why this old local flag is raised every morning to remind citizens of what we’ve been through to obtain freedom. Meanwhile, the locals take her down every evening and don’t let her touch the ground, folding this flag up with respect, just as she deserves. This is what has led this town to be become proud of their Ragged Old Flag.

Final Thoughts:

I was a Boy Scout until high school when sports became a bigger priority in my life. Yet, I learned to respect the American flag as a scout. At ballgames I learned to rise for the National Anthem and place my hand over my chest. Although I have gone through the motions many times when I sing the Star-Spangled Banner, certain moments I was stuck with the same appreciation as the local man in this song. Instead of airing your grievances, it’s time to start thanking God for being born and or living in the greatest country in the world.

Dolly Parton – Color Me America (Audio)

Inspiration Behind Color Me America:

Dolly Parton wrote Color Me America the day after September 11th, 2001. The horrific events of 9/11 filled Dolly with a spirit of patriotism. The lyrics reflect the aspirations and values that Americans shared at this moment in time. Dolly waited until June 2003 before releasing Color Me America on her For God and Country album.

Biblical Application:

Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself, Matthew 22:34-39.

Exegesis of Color Me America:

I am red and white and blue
These are colors that ring true
To all I am and feel and love and do
I stand proud and brave and tall
I want justice for us all
Color me America, red, white and blue

Dolly compares how she is feeling to the colors of the American flag. Dolly is proud of her country, appreciating all that America stands for.

I see red when evil speaks
Spilling red blood on our streets
And I feel blue from grief and sorrow that it brings
But the white, the light of love
God’s own Spirit like a dove
Lifts us up and hands to us an olive branch

Dolly tries to put the attack on America into words. Evil prevailed on this day resulting in death. Dolly is grieving with the families of Americans who lost loved ones. Dolly leans on God in the aftermath of 9/11, seeking help from above.

And may peace and beauty fill our hearts anew
And may we all stand up for you
May our thoughts and deeds be true

Dolly clings to the freedom in America. Hoping for peace and healing. Followed by a call to stand up for American values. Praying for the proper response in deeds and thoughts, based upon American values.

The chorus reflect the colors of the flag. Dolly has learned to love what this flag represents. Full of pride which makes her stand tall for American values.

Final Thoughts:

I serviced a bank across the street from the Liberty Bell on September 11th. Before the Twin Towers fell, I received a call not to report to work as their area was closed for security reasons. This one event altered my career path, going into teaching a few months later. When one door closed, another opened, providing a decade to pour my heart and soul into teaching high school students. Color Me America became a song which reflected my own appreciation for this country. Although no nation is perfect, it’s still an amazing place to live.

Inspiration Behind American Woman:

The original version of American Woman was written by the Guess. Since the band members were against the Vietnam War, the American Woman was seen as a distraction. Lead singer Burton Cummings initially composed the lyrics to be a metaphor for Canadian woman. Yet the lyrics sought to present an anti-war message indirectly while maintaining a positive tone. Lenny Kravitz’s version used Austin’s Powers the Spy that Shagged Me to spice up this album cover.

Biblical Application:

“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell, Matthew 5:21-22.

Exegesis of American Woman:

The lyrics appear to have multiple meanings. Does the Guess see American woman as a distraction? Or is Burton’s mother trying to find him a wife, wanting grandchildren.

This stanza suggests that woman are seen as an obstacle to freedom and independence.

These men wanted tp remain single.

Settling down was seen as a sign of weakness,

A blunt way of saying I’m not interested.

An anti-war stanza. Women are described as distractions and nuisances. Meanwhile Vietnam veterans didn’t need to be lectured by people who didn’t understand this war.

Perhaps some women were encouraging young men to enlist.

A call to be free from distractions.

A reference to going off to war or a plea to be free again.

Either a goodbye, going off to war or a call for freedom, to become single again. Fleeing any form of commitment.

Final Thoughts:

Before my senior year, I broke up with my high school sweetheart. At this time, I cared more about winning a state championship in cross country rather than being in a relationship. Girls distracted me as a sophomore and junior so I made thus rash decision. Perhaps, this was part of the mentality that went into the lyrics of American Woman.
