Inspiration Behind Only in America:

Brooks and Dunn share a deep appreciation for America as well as it’s blend of cultures. Don Cook and Ronnie Rodgers collaborated with Brooks and Dunn on Only in America. The patriotic lyrics fit well into their 2001 album Steers and Stripes. After the events of September 11th, Only in America became a unifying message for a mourning nation in need of a hope and positivity.

Biblical Application:

The mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory, Colossians 1:26-27.

Exegesis of Only in America:

Sun coming up over New York city
School bus driver in a traffic jam
Starin’ at the faces in her rearview mirror
Looking at the promise of the Promised land
A one kid dreams of fame and fortune
One kid helps pay the rent
One could end up going to prison
One just might be president

Another day begins in a big city when a New York bus driver glances in her mirror to check out what is going on behind her. What she sees is future leaders of America filled with aspirations, dreams and goals. This driver thinks about the paths that each might take.

These dreams could come true in America. Everyone has a chance to pursue their ideal life.

And talk about the stars they could have been

On the other side of the coast, there is a newly married couple. Sons and daughters begin to carve their own path in life. All they want is a chance for success, as soon as possible, risking failure to chase after their dreams. Instead of wondering what might have been, they gave it a shot.

This can happen in America. Where dreaming big is encouraged. If you work hard enough, you can make this a reality.

Final Thoughts:

As the son of an immigrant, I have seen great things happen. I went from living paycheck to paycheck to fulfilling some of my dreams in life. While life is full of challenges, you have to be willing to take chances by risking failure to see if you have what it takes to succeed. When failure does occur, you can always reinvent yourself by changing direction. As you evolve, you may not like what you are doing but you can always change course if necessary. Since you only live once, keep chasing after your dreams.

Bruce Springsteen – Born in the U.S.A. (Official Video)

Inspiration Behind Born in the USA:

The context of Born in the USA is written from the perspective of a soldier who served in the Vietnam War. Upon arriving home safely, unlike many of his fellow soldiers, he was met with economic hardship. Despite the overwhelming popularity of Born in the USA, Bruce attacks the American government as it failed to help veterans reintegrate back into the work force. The lyrics also warns Americans that being born in this country doesn’t guarantee success in realizing the American Dream. Since the Vietnam War was the first to have nearly unlimited media access like the film Good Morning Vietnam, journalists back in America began to label Vietnam vets as baby killers. Films like Rambo depict how Bruce Springsteen felt about how the government let Vietnam vets down.

Biblical Application:

A time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8  a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace, Ecclesiastes 3:7-8.

Exegesis of Born in the USA:

Born down in a dead man’s town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
End up like a dog that’s been beat too much
‘Til you spend half your life just to cover it up now

This individual came back from war to return to a dying town. This was like a gut punch to this soldier. Human beings can only take so much before they crack. The transition from soldier to worker took half of his life.

This soldier was born in the USA, but his life was far from the American dream.

So they put a rifle in my hands

This man turned to the military for direction in life. He was trained to shoot and kill the enemy in the Vietnam War.

This was the dilemma for this soldier born in America,

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man said, “Son, if it was up to me”
Went down to see my V.A. man
He said, “Son, don’t you understand, now?”

This journey led to working at a refinery. However, the hiring manager referred him to the VA to see what other military options were available. No one is being straight with this soldier.

This is the frustration of this veteran.

I had a brother at Khe Sanh
Fightin’ off them Viet Cong
They’re still there, he’s all gone
He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now

Perhaps this song is about Bruce’s brother. The people he was fighting are still alive, but he died. This soldier left behind a woman that he loved.

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I’m ten years burnin’ down the road
Nowhere to run, ain’t got nowhere to go

Bruce feels for the former veterans who have lost their way. Down on their luck with nowhere to turn.

This is the sad story of a forgotten US veteran.

Bruce ends with a positive spin.

Final Thoughts:

Mixing politics with music usually doesn’t have a positive ending. The lyrics remind me of the Rambo series of movies based upon the John Rambo character who is the lone survivor of an elite squadron. Those who didn’t die in Vietnam died or cancer from the chemicals of war they were exposed to. While Born in the USA remains a popular song today, the lyrics reveal a sad story about the casualties of war.

Inspiration Behind American Heart:

This song was conceived from Faith Hill’s personal experiences of being around optimistic people from the United States. American Heart was co-written by Jonathon Singleton and Jim Beavers who drew inspiration from resilience and determination from Americans facing challenging times in life. The lyrics reflect personal struggles and triumphs that human beings face daily in life. This perseverance is the backbone of American Heart.

Biblical Application:

For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business. 12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him, James 1:11-12.

Exegesis of American Heart:

She’s up before the sun, on the run
Another dollar, another day, another cup of coffee
Thank you Lord for giving me one more
She still leans on her dreams but it seems
Sometimes she’s the only one who still believes
That life is hard, so she takes it on

The opening 2 lines highlights anyone trying to get ahead in life. God is credited for providing another day with a glimmer of hope to keep the American Dream alive. As others lose hope, she still believes this is possible.

Music keeps her going, singing positive songs. Dreams aren’t compromised, but continue to grow with optimism. Despite disappointment, obstacles and setbacks, the American Heart is still beating as hard as ever.

One thing that I have learned over the years is to be content with where you are in life. It’s easy to become jealous by looking at more successful people. However, if you view success as [art of your own personal journey in life, you’ll become like the woman in the opening stanza eager to make the most of the day in front of her. Taking one day at a time can propel you toward seizing the moments that each new day provides. If you fail or fall short of your expectations, you’ll have another chance tomorrow to shine, This is the resilience of an American Heart.

Inspiration Behind Last Dance:

Last Dance was conceived from a specific creative brief for the film Thank God It’s Friday. This scene was from a fictional disco club in Los Angeles. Last Dance functions as a literal closing moment, like a bar having their last call for buying a drink before closing. The lyrics contain a sense of urgency, to seize this final dance on the night club floor.

Biblical Application:

Inspiration Behind the Twist:

The Twist came from a real-life dance craze that had been circulating in African American communities since the early 20th century. The motions of the twist first appeared in dance moves known as the Mess Around and Ballin’ the Jack. However, when Dick Clark, host of American Bandstand, recognized the potential crossover of the Twist, Chubby Checker, formally Ernest Evans, took this song and dance to new heights.

Biblical Application:

You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, 12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever, Psalm 30:11-12.

Certain songs are designed to dance to, with versions of the Twist already in existence. Chubby Checker creates a song to celebrate the Twist which became a cultural movement. Inspiration Behind Shout:

The Isley Brothers version of Shout was a spontaneous, audience‑driven moment during a live performance. This improv in 1959 has become part of most must play lists at dances, proms and weddings. The band was closing a soul revue at the Uptown Theater in Philadelphia when lead singer Ronald Isley noticed the audience was standing and cheering. Similar to a band playing one more unexpected song at a concert, Ronald added an extended version of Shout which is now the original version.

Due to the live audience, the lyrics don’t mean us much as a typical song. Rather, the Isley Brothers are focused on getting everyone on the dance floor excited. The words in italics are used to ignite the audience into a frenzy. This song is designed to set the tone on the dance floor and accomplishes this every time I’ve heard this at a club. Over 65 years later, Shout remains a great song to dance and listen to.

Inspiration Behind Let’s Dance:

David Bowie made a deliberate shift toward pop accessibility.in 1983. This decision combined with commercial ambition and reinvention laid the foundation for Let’s Dance. After experimenting with rock, Bowe was ready for a change. This coincided with David’s departure from RCA Records, disappointed by his limited success in the United States. To complete his vision for Let’s Dance, Bowe brought in guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and marketing magic of Niles Rodgers to transform this song into a dance-pop anthem.

Biblical Application:

I learned to dance in high school as a sophomore so that I could begin to be proficient enough to ask girls to a slow dance. However, the more I begin to lose myself in the music, especially fast paced songs, I found this much more fulfilling and satisfying. The more you dance, the more you’ll develop your own unique moves and style. Songs like Let’s Dance encouraged me to begin dancing, evolving into the dancers that I have become today.

Inspiration Behind California Dreamin’:

John and Michelle Phillip endured the harsh winter of 1963, living in New York City at this time. As someone who lived in the snowbelt in Cleveland, Ohio, you can only take so much bitter cold and shoving snow. The Phillips were newlyweds, living in a cramped apartment with a group of folk singers. When you are stuck inside for an extended period of time, thoughts are warmer. nicer days conceived California Dreamin’.

Biblical Application:

Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.5 The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises.6 The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. Ecclesiastes 1:4-6.

Exegesis of California Dreamin’:

All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are brown)

This young couple write about a lifeless winter in New York City. When it’s not snowing, they will take walks. Yet the cold landscape conceives images of a warmer place like Los Angeles.

On Sunday, they went to church, searching for a sign of hope. John got down on one of the altars, bowing his head. However, the message of the preacher turned him off as if he was stuck in New York for good. This experience only intended his desire to move to a warmer place.

Seeing trees without leaves cam be depressing. The Phillips long for a place full of life.

This is the inspiration behind California dreaming, searching for warmth and a place full of life.

Final Thoughts:

I have lived and traveled to northern states. I witnessed snow on Memorial Day weekend. I experienced snow in July while visiting Montana. I even saw snow in the mountains of Maine in late August. You could be in the middle of summer and still experience winter. On the other hand, it may be so hot where you live today that you’re praying for an early fall. Since weather cnages constantly, all you can do is enjoy that great weather days that come your way.

Rick Springfield – Jessie’s Girl (Official Video)

Inspiration Behind Jessie’s Girl:

Rick Springfield was taking a stained-glass art class in Pasadena, California, when he developed a crush on one of the women in his class. Unfortunately, she was already in a romantic relationship with one of Rick’s friends. This unrelenting crush didn’t go away so Rick wrote the song Gary’s Girl after his friend. However, the name didn’t sit well with Rick. The search for a replacement name was discovered on a T-shirt as Jessie sounded better and felt right. The lyrics reflect the disappointment of being in love but overshadowed by someone more charismatic.

Biblical Application:

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice, James 3:13-16.

Exegesis of Jessie’s Girl:

Jessie is a friend
Yeah, I know, he’s been a good friend of mine
But lately something’s changed that ain’t hard to define

This woman in his art class was growing on Rick. The more he spent time with her in class, the greater his crush on her grew. Unfortunately, his friend Gary was already dating her.

And she’s watching him with those eyes
And she’s loving him with that body, I just know it
Yeah, and he’s holding her in his arms late, late at night
You know, I wish that I had

Rick is starting to become envious of his friend, wishing he could feel what Gary is feeling when this couple is together.

No one that he has met compares to this woman.

I’ll play along with the charade
There doesn’t seem to be a reason to change

Every time Rick thinks he has a chance, Gary is there to meet her after class. Rick is losing hope, thinking it’s not worth telling her how he feels.

He looks and their relationship is too much for Rick to handle.

The frustrating part of becoming consumed by envy and jealousy.

Final Thoughts:

Jessie’s Girl reminds me of 2 situations from my own life. My best friend from high school, Carl, we decided early on that we would never date someone that the other liked. When one of the most attractive girls on the cross-country team asked me out, I declined as I was in love with one of her friends. I told her how Carl felt and they went out on a date before each moving on to another person. Meanwhile, in college, I was in a similar situation as Rick. I liked a girl who liked a close friend. When I finally revealed how I felt about her, she simply wanted to be friends. After this conversation, I walked away from this friendship as it was too painful to be with her and only be a friend. This is how I handled the situation in Jessie’s Girl.

Inspiration Behind Take It Easy:

The lyrics to Take It Easy is a blend from roadside Americana, friendships from Los Angeles, and personal experiences. Jackson Browne began writing Take It Easy in 1971, drawing on the restless traveling of a touring musician. With so much going on around you, sometimes getting on stage helps you slow down, forgetting about your problems until the concert is over. Browning’s neighbor and future Eagles bandmate Glenn Frey listened to Jackson’s original version and helped complete the unfinished verse.

Biblical Application:

“All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid, John 14:25-27.

Jackson is going for a drive, trying to relax. Four women want to settle down, 2 hate him and another is a friend.

Relax. Don’t let all the distractions in life wear you down.

Don’t even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand

Don’t hold on to anxieties, burdens and concerns. Find a place to make your stand so you can relax.

Jackson is now hitchhiking, enjoying the scenery. An attractive woman in a truck slows down. He’s hoping she picks him up, saving him from the misery of his past.

As she stops to give him a ride, he’s not sure of the outcome. But he’s chilling, accepting whatever happens.

Jackson’s back to where he was in the beginning. He is looking for a relationship but with someone who doesn’t know he is a famous musician.

The lyrics are a message to Jackson, a call to relax. Don’t let your current situation make you crazy.

Final Thoughts:

As someone who was an emotional wreck in my teenage years, I needed to hear this message to relax. I took things too seriously until college. Once I matured, I was able to relieve my anxieties, burdens and concerns. Now as an adult, Take It Easy is still a good message to live by. When your life is spiraling out of control, take it easy!
