Inspiration Behind Rock Me Amadeus:

Falco went to see the film Amadeus in 1984. After this movie, Falco became fascinated with Amadeus. Falco set out to compose a song that would celebrate of genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Reflecting upon the rivalry between Mozart and Antonio Salieri, Falco’s creative juices flowed to mix synth-pop with rap. Once complete, Rock Me Amadeus became a worldwide hit.

Biblical Application:

For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did, 1 Corinthians 10:1-6.

Exegesis of Rock Me Amadeus:

Rock me, rock me, rock me, rock me, rock me, Amadeus

Rock me all the time to the top

If you were inspired by a classical musician, this is not the way you would begin a tribute song. Yet, Falco appears to wonder, “what if Mozart was a rock star?”

Er war ein Punker und er lebte in der großen Stadt
Es war in Wien, war Vienna, wo er alles tat
Er hatte Schulden, denn er trank, doch ihn liebten alle Frauen
Und jede rief: “Yeah, Come on and rock me, Amadeus”

Falco transitions from his native German back to English. Falco refers to Amadeus as the punk rock star of his day. While his weakness for alcohol made his poor, the woman of his day loved him. Sometimes lyrics are secondary to a beat and melody which likely explains why Rock Me Amadeus became a global hit.

Er war Superstar, er war populär
Er war so exaltiert, because er hatte Flair
Er war ein Virtuose, war ‘n Rockidol
Und alles rief: “Yeah, come and rock me, Amadeus”

Falco uses German to celebrate. the greatness of Mozart.

Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus
Oh, oh, oh, Amadeus
Come and rock me, Amadeus

The bland repetitive song writing didn’t make this song a hit. It was the rhythm and style that moved listeners.

Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus
Oh, oh, oh, Amadeus (ey!)

Falco was surely obsessed with Amadeus. Perhaps’ Falco’s English was limited at the time of this recording which led to repeating Amadeus over and over again.

Es war um siebzehn-hundert-achtzig und es war in Wien
No plastic money anymore, die Banken gegen ihn
Woher die Schulden kamen, war wohl jedermann bekannt
Er war ein Mann der Frauen, Frauen liebten seinen Punk

Falco provides the historical context of what Amadeus had to overcome. Amadeus rose above these circumstances to be an elite classical musician.

Er war Superstar, er war so populär
Er war zu exaltiert, genau das war sein Flair
Er war ein Virtuose, war ‘n Rockidol
Und alles ruft noch heute: “Come and rock me, Amadeus”

Amadeus was a superstar of his day with flair.

Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus
Oh, oh, oh, Amadeus
Oh, come and rock me, Amadeus

Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus
Oh, oh, oh, Amadeus
Come and rock me, Amadeus

Oh, come and rock me, Amadeus

Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus
Oh, oh, oh, Amadeus (come and rock me, Amadeus)

Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus
Oh, oh, oh, Amadeus (Amadeus, Amadeus)

(Amadeus, Amadeus)

(Ama-ama-ama-amadeus)
(Ama-ama-amadeus)

Oh, come and, come and rock me, Amadeus

Perhaps Falco could have ended this song sooner, but the basic chorus suggests limited English at the time this song was written.

Amadeus (-deus, -deus, -deus, -deus, -deus, -deus, -deus, -deus, -deus, -deus)

Final Thoughts:

In the entertainment industry, sex appeal sells average and mediocre products. In the case of Rock Me Amadeus, the lyrics are underwhelming at best. Yet, the sound, beat and unique style made Falco a giant one hit wonder that is still aired on radio stations today.

Inspiration Behind Mr. Roboto:

Styx was way ahead of its time in the creation of Mr. Roboto on their Kilroy Was Here Album in 1983. Song writer Dennis DeYoung was fascinated by a documentary on robots that he watched. Dennis became concerned with how the automation of new technology would have on future blue-collar jobs. Subsequently, this led to the theme of non-conformists trying to escape from oppressive authorities.

Biblical Application:

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As people moved eastward,[a] they found a plain in Shinar[b] and settled there. They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other,” Genesis 11:1-7.

Exegesis of Mr. Roboto:

どうもありがと Mr. Roboto
どうもありがと Mr. Roboto
また会う日まで
どうもありがと Mr. Roboto
秘密を知りたい

This song starts off in Japanese. At this time in history, Japan was introducing automation into the car industry, threatening the job security of auto workers.

You’re wondering who I am (secret, secret, I’ve got a secret)
Machine or mannequin? (Secret, secret, I’ve got a secret)
With parts made in Japan (secret, secret, I’ve got a secret)
I am thee modern man

Like any new invention, high ranking company leaders aren’t always honest and open of how new technology will impact future jobs. This is the secret kept from current employees until their real intentions are finally made public. The modern man is made of steel.

I’ve got a secret, I’ve been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain IBM
So if you see me acting strangely, don’t be surprised
I’m just a man who needed someone and somewhere to hide to keep me alive
Just keep me alive, somewhere to hide, to keep me alive

Computers were the first step toward artificial intelligence. The lyrics of this stanza remind me of the 2004 science fiction film I-Robot which dealt with similar concerns.

I’m not a robot without emotions, I’m not what you see
I’ve come to help you with your problems so we can be free
I’m not a hero, I’m not the saviour, forget what you know
I’m just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control
Beyond my control, we all need control
I need control, we all need control

From the corporate management perspective, robots would save companies money over time. Robots didn’t need health insurance or other expensive benefits, just daily and weekly maintenance performed by a computer and skilled mechanic. With robots now in use, there is no going back, seizing control of the auto industry.

I am thee modern man (secret, secret, I’ve got a secret)
Who hides behind a mask (secret, secret, I’ve got a secret)
So no one else can see (secret, secret, I’ve got a secret)
My true identity

In the end, the real plan for robots is cheaper labor at a higher efficiency and productivity.

どうもありがと Mr. Roboto
どうも (どうも)
どうも (どうも)
どうもありがと Mr. Roboto
どうも (どうも)
どうも (どうも)
どうもありがと Mr. Roboto
どうもありがと Mr. Roboto
どうもありがと Mr. Roboto
どうもありがと Mr. Roboto

This song transitions back into Japanese as if to suggest, “what are these people hiding?”

Thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For doing the jobs that nobody wants to
And thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For helping me escape, when I needed to
Thank you, thank you, thank you
I want to thank you
Please, thank you, oh-oh-oh, yeah

American companies began to ship blue-collar jobs oversea0s, handing China dominance over the production of consumer goods. When robots took over factories convincing the labor force that you’re too good to work in this industry. Unfortunately, this initial thanks turned into regret.

The problem’s plain to see
Too much technology
Machines to save our lives
Machines dehumanize

A paycheck that once went to hard working men and women have vanished from cities across the country. This all occurred because human beings placed their trust in innovative machines rather than human minds hungry for a nice paycheck.

The time has come at last (secret, secret, I’ve got a secret)
To throw away this mask (secret, secret, I’ve got a secret)
Now everyone can see (secret, secret, I’ve got a secret)
My true identity

This was the plan all along, to save companies money by replacing human beings with robots.

I’m Kilroy, Kilroy, Kilroy, Kilroy

Kilroy is the protagonist in this song, the lead character, similar to Sonny in I-Robot.

Final Thoughts:

Mr. Roboto questions if robots should have been created in the first place. In modern times, the same debate is occurring over artificial intelligence. Sometimes entrepreneurs are so excited about the vision for their idea that they don’t think about how their invention will impacts society. Building new things aren’t bad, but certain projects like the Tower of Babel was off limits.

Inspiration Behind Dreams:

Behind the scenes, band members endure trials whether while on the road touring or cutting a new album. Stevie Nix wrote the song Dreams during a tumultuous period for Fleetwood Mac. As personalities clashed during the recording of their Rumors album, internal conflicts intensified. The lyrics to Dreams were conceived from these personal relationships that Nix hoped would recover from this difficult time for Fleetwood Mac.

Biblical Application:

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you, Ephesians 4:29-32.

Exegesis of Dreams:

Now here you go again, you say you want your freedom
Well, who am I to keep you down?
It’s only right that you should play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound of your loneliness

Apparently, at least one band member of Fleetwood Mac was thinking about leaving before the Rumors album was completed. Stevie understood the need for freedom but play a song the way you feel it needs to be played. If this isn’t good enough for you, are you ready to go on your own.

Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost
And what you had
And what you lost

Think about what you’re about to do before making a decision that you’ll regret.

Oh, thunder only happens when it’s raining
Players only love you when they’re playing
Say, women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know
You’ll know

Human beings can be shallow basing their feelings about you by your performance. People will come and go as they please. During periods of rain and storms, you’ll know when you’re fully recovered.

Now here I go again, I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself
It’s only me who wants to wrap around your dreams
And have you any dreams you’d like to sell?
Dreams of loneliness

Stevie has a clear vision either for the band or herself. Yet, she doesn’t think now is the time to tell anyone in the band. Stevie is either referring to a relationship or dreams about Fleetwood Mac. Unfortunately, at the time of writing Dreams, she doesn’t feel that optimistic, just loneliness.

Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost
And what you had
Oh, what you lost

Stevie doesn’t want to lose the friendships and relationships that she had at this time.

Thunder only happens when it’s raining
Players only love you when they’re playing
Women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know

The chorus serves as a time of reflection. People and love change constantly.

Oh, thunder only happens when it’s raining
Players only love you when they’re playing
Say, women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know
You’ll know
You will know
Oh, you’ll know

Stevie is giving the audience and band members something to think about. The rainwater is symbolic of being cleansed and healed from heart break in life.

Final Thoughts:

In the heat of the moment, we all have said things that we regret. This is why reconciliation is crucial for forgiving and forgetting to move forward in a relationship. While certain people will need a kick in the rear from time to time, staying optimistic has a way of mending fragile relationships. When you point out the positive in the form of affirmations and encouragement, you’re more likely to keep a group of friends together. This is what helps keep dreams alive.

Inspiration Behind Another Brick in the Wall Part 2:

Roger Water’s personal experiences growing up in Great Britan left a negative impression of their educational system. When Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister, her conservative views strengthened Roger’s convictions about the oppressive and strict nature of schools. When teenagers are stifled and misunderstood, rebellion often follows. This is the background which led Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 to become an anthem for rising up against established order.

Biblical Application:

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son, Hebrews 12:5-6.

Exegesis of Another Brick in the Wall Part 2:

We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teacher, leave them kids alone

Nearly fifty years after the release of this song, the member of Pink Floyd got their wish. Education has become an institution for grooming children as discipline is now considered racist and teachers have lost control of their classrooms.

Hey, teacher, leave them kids alone!
All in all, it’s just another brick in the wall
All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall

Education in Great Britain and the United States is now broken. A 1960 high school diploma required more work than a modern-day college degree. Meanwhile, high school seniors continue to graduate without the ability to properly read or write.

We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers, leave them kids alone

This stanza reminds me of Communist, Marxist and Socialist countries who dumb down education so that a new general of young people will embrace communism. This likely explains why New York City just elected a democratic socialist.

Hey, teacher! Leave us kids alone!
All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall
All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall

This modern-day brick in the wall is symbolic of a failing education system. Teachers are spending so more time trying to control unruly children that time for learning is limited.

Wrong, do it again
Wrong, do it again
If you don’t eat your meat, you can’t have any pudding
How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?
You! Yes! You, behind the bike sheds!
Stand still, laddie!

This stanza is trying to emulate a teacher running a strict classroom in the late 1970’s. While certain teachers don’t relate to students, discipline is a sign of love. If you don’t care about children, you won’t correct wrong behavior. A classroom without rules results in chaos.

Final Thoughts:

As a former teacher, school isn’t for everyone. In America, modern-day education has been created by women for women. As activities like recess and classes like gym have been removed from a growing number of schools, boys have been left behind. While Charter and Vocational schools are on the right track, active learning is necessary to keep students engaged. However, education must focus on the basics: reading, writing and arithmetic. Once ideology and the political correctness is removed, schools can get back to equipping young people for success in the future.

The Message Behind the Music-January 17

Inspiration Behind Tom Sawyer:

Tom Sawyer is a fictional character conceived within the mind of Mark Twain. Tom is a young boy who grew up along the banks of the Mississippi River, highlighted by unconstrained mischievous adventures exploring this massive body of water. The inspiration behind Rush’s song relied on Mark Twain’s 1876 novel and Canadian poet Pye Dubois. These resources helped Rush imagine what a modern Tom Sawyer would be like if alive today.

Biblical Application:

The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’ And whether they listen or fail to listen—for they are a rebellious people—they will know that a prophet has been among them. And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people. You must speak my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious. But you, son of man, listen to what I say to you. Do not rebel like that rebellious people; open your mouth and eat what I give you,”Ezekiel 2:4-8.

Exegesis of Tom Sawyer:

A modern day warrior
Mean, mean stride
Today’s Tom Sawyer
Mean, mean pride

Rush envisions Tom Sawyer as cocky, cruel and someone with swagger.

Though his mind is not for rent
Don’t put him down as arrogant
His reserve, a quiet defense
Riding out the day’s events
The river

This Tom is self-taught. His arrogance comes from learned experiences, far more advanced from young boys his age. Every day provides a new chance to learn like the original Tom on the Mississippi River.

What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the mist, catch the myth
Catch the mystery, catch the drift

Don’t judge a book by its cover. This is what every generation says about the one that follows. Take time to look at someone’s background and back story to see who they really are and why they act and behave the way that they do.

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his skies are wide

The world is complex. Meanwhile, love and life run deep into one’s soul. It takes time to figure people out.

Today’s Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the space he invades
He gets by on you

Every day was an adventure for Tom. Self-discovery kept Tom hungry to learn more about the unknown. This led Tom to invade private property, sneaking in and out before being noticed.

No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren’t permanent
But change is

The original Tom was into rugged individualism. He didn’t care what others thought, only concerned with self-discovery. Tom wasn’t influenced by any government or religion. Rather, life is an adventure filled with hope and disappointment. Change is a constant part of life.

And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the witness, catch the wit
Catch the spirit, catch the spit

The Bible disagrees with this stanza as the apostle Paul warns a first century church that bad character does corrupt good morals, 1 Corinthians 15:33.

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide

Life is filled with mysterious, questions that you search for answers to for years.

Exit the warrior
Today’s Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade
He gets right on to the friction of the day

If you focus too much on what others are doing instead of what you need to be doing, you let Tom Sawyer get under your skin, your emotions. Instead, turn your energy and focus on the concerns of current events so that you can make a difference in life.

Final Thoughts:

What if the newest version of Tom Sawyer is Donald J. Trump? This would explain the rise in Trump Derangement Syndrome as democrats, liberals, progressives and socialists are obsessed with everything Trump. Rather than wakeup and try to find something that you hate about this president, start each new day by coming up with solutions to make this world a better place.

The Message Behind the Music-January 16

Inspiration Behind Free Bird:

Although Lynyrd Skynyrd did dedicate Free Bird to Duane Allman following his death, this song was inspired by a conversation following a fight between guitarist Allen Collins and his wife Kathy. Collins’ opening line is a hypothetical question, “what would happen if I leave here tomorrow?” This one line stuck with lead singer Robbie Van Zant who turned this question into one of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s greatest songs. Thinking about the free spirits of this era, Robbie writes about breaking free from social constraints. Free Bird addresses a desire for freedom and quest for self-discovery.

Biblical Application:

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you, Galatians 5:1-8.

Exegesis of Free Bird:

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on now
‘Cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see

No idea is neutral. Every choice has a consequence. If you pick up and leave, human nature causes you to wonder if you;ll be missed or remembered. Whether you’re talking about a band on tour ready to travel to their next destination or someone who simply wants to travel to see what else is out there, self-discovery must continue.

But if I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn’t be the same

If Allen stays with his wife, things must change to avoid these heated arguments.

‘Cause I’m as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Robbie writes about an individual’s inner desire for freedom.

And the bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
Lord knows I can’t change

Perhaps Robbie is thinking about how people want you to become someone that can be controlled to be conformed into what they desire instead of who you truly are as a person.

Bye-bye, baby, it’s been a sweet love, yeah, yeah
Though this feeling I can’t change
But, please, don’t take it so badly
‘Cause Lord knows I’m to blame

Selfish desires based upon impulses often cause relationships to end.

But if I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn’t be the same

Let me be who I am instead of who you want me to become.

‘Cause I’m as free as a bird now
And this bird, you’ll never change
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
And the bird you cannot change

Stubborn people won’t change unless some sort of life crisis arises.

And this bird you cannot change
Lord knows I can’t change
Lord, help me, I can’t change

Robbie seeks a higher power, crying out to God in prayer to change.

Lord, I can’t change
Won’t you fly high, free bird, yeah

Like an alcoholic who doesn’t think they have a problem, self-admission, recognizing that you have a problem is the first step to change, being healed.

Final Thoughts:

As someone who loved taking spontaneous road trips in college, I understand the Free Bird spirit. Yet, as I have grown older and become a grandfather twice now, there is nothing like the feeling of being home. I still pursue freedom and self-discovery, but I do so in making sure that I find my place in this world. As the world evolves, you must adjust if you want to be effective engaging culture in a productive manner.

The Inspiration Behind Dream On:

Steven Tyler’s father was a classical musician. Subsequently, when you are exposed to artists such as Bach and Chopin as a child, this influences how you want to create and compose modern-day music. This creative process began within a house in Foxboro, Massachusetts as band members from Aerosmith worked on their debut album. Steven had a vision for Dream On to include an orchestra arrangement with a dramatic progression to pick of the pace. The chorus for Dream On was conceived from Steven’s thoughts about life and desire to become a lead singer.

Biblical Application:

This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.[b] I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile,” Jeremiah 29:10-14.

Exegesis of Dream On:

Every time when I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face getting clearer
The past is gone
It went by like dusk to dawn

Steven is reflecting upon staring into a mirror, likely to practice singing. Whether as a child or aspiring lead singer, this time has passed, vanishing so quickly.

Isn’t that the way?
Everybody’s got their dues in life to pay, yeah

Sometimes people have to work in other areas of interest in life just to pay their bills before being able to pursue their dreams.

I know nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know and everybody sin
You got to lose to know how to win

Steven appears to refer to life as a series of trial and error to figure what they truly want to do in life as well as ascertaining right from wrong. You have to fail before you learn how to succeed.

Half my life’s in books’ written pages
Live and learn from fools and from sages
You know it’s true
All the feelings come back to you

Either Steven refers to life as a book in progress or half of his life is now history. As you live and learn from your past, you want to make sure you don’t keep making the same mistake over and over again.

Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing it with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

Nobody knows the future. You may have a sense of what lies ahead tomorrow, but for now enjoy the present. If today is your last day on earth, make the most of it.

Well, sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing it with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

By repeating the chorus, Steven is inviting the audience to live in the moment.

Dream on, dream on, dream on
Dream until your dream come true
Dream on, dream on, dream on
Dream until your dream come true

Don’t give up on your life’s aspirations. Don’t settle for what others what you to be. Rather, strive for the dreams, hopes and goals that God created you to fulfill in life.

Dream on, dream on, dream on, dream on
Dream on, dream on, dream on, ah!

Don’t ever give up on your dreams.

Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing it with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

Seize the moment; enjoy this concert by singing with me.

Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing it with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away

Use singing as a vessel for healing.

Final Thoughts:

Everyone’s life is on a certain trajectory. You may be pleased with the direction you or currently going in or want to use 2026 as a year to transition in a different direction. Wherever you are in life, don’t settle for mediocracy. Instead, don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams and passions in life. While you may not succeed, you’ll never know if you don’t try.

Inspiration Behind Therapy:

Following the breakup with his finance, Matt Thiessen secluded himself in a cabin. Matt ended up staying in Winchester, Tennessee for 3 months as he tried to process what went wrong. Matt did some deep soul searching, crying out to God in prayer for answers. This cabin and time of solitude served as therapy. a therapeutic place to work out his emotions which conceived the lyrics of Therapy.

Biblical Application:

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you,” Matthew 6:5-6.

Exegesis of Therapy:

I never though I’d be driving through the country just to drive
With only music and the clothes that I woke up in

People heal in different ways. For Matt, driving to this cabin began his time of reflection.

I never thought I’d need all this time alone it goes to show
I had so much yet I had need for nothing but you
But you

Matt didn’t plan on spending 3 months in Tennessee. Yet, he needed this time to reconnect with God.

This is just therapy
Just call it what it is
With a death-grip on this life always transitioning
This is just therapy
Cause you won’t take my calls
And that makes God the only one who’s left to listen in to me

Matt tried to reach out to his ex-girlfriend hoping to get back to together, but she didn’t pick up the phone to talk. Subsequently, God was the only one who would listen to him.

Letting it all sink in
It’s good to feel the sting now and again
I hope it’s one less woeful thing there is to fight through
Forgetting it all begin
Fresh paper and nice expensive pen
The past can not subtract a thing from what I might do
For you
Unless that’s what I let it do

This pain allowed Matt to reflect upon this trial, hoping this is one less thing that he has to worry about in life. Matt appeared to write his ex but it appears this was unsuccessful.

This is just therapy
Just call it what it is
With a death-grip on this life always transitioning
This is just therapy
Cause you won’t take my calls
And that makes God the only one who’s left to listen in

Matt has come to the realization that his relationship is over and it’s time to transition by moving on with life.

Loneliness and solitude are two things not to get confused
Cause I spend my solitude with you
I gather all the questions of the things I just can’t get straight
And I answer them the way I guess you’d do

Matt is still wrestling with God in prayer for answers, trying to figure out what to do next.

Cause this is my therapy
Cause you’re the only one that’s listening to me
This is my therapy
Let’s call it what it is not what we were
With a death-grip on this life thats in transition
This is my therapy
Cause you won’t hear me out and that makes God the only one who’s left here to listen in

This trial in Matt’s life is forcing him to lean on God for understanding as he tries to heal.

This is just therapy
Just call it what it is
With a death-grip on this life always transitioning
This is just therapy
Cause you won’t take my calls
And that makes God the only one who’s left to listen in to me

At the end of the third month in this cabin, Matt had come to grips with his emotions. Despite his feelings for his ex, God gave Matt direction or some type of vision to move on with his life.

Final Thoughts:

Trials aren’t something that you put on a monthly calendar. Rather, these events arrive unannounced. Sometimes friends can help while other situations need to be resolved alone. As you begin 2026, make sure you take the necessary steps and time for your own therapy. After this recovery, you’ll be able to help those who are enduring a trial that you just overcame.

Inspiration Behind Bring Me Back to Life:

The origins of Bring Me Back to Life stem from a serious conversation with a friend when lead singer Amy Lee was 19. While talking over a meal Amy was asked by s friend, “are you happy?” This simple question triggered a realization that Amy was hiding behind an emotional facade. This self-reflection conceived the lyrics to Bring Me Back to Life.

Biblical Application:

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit,” John 3:1-8.

Exegesis of Bring Me Back to Life:

How can you see into my eyes like open doors?
Leading you down into my core where I’ve become so numb
Without a soul, my spirit’s sleeping somewhere cold
Until you find it there and lead it back home

Amy reflects upon the conversation where a friend was able to see something inside of her that wasn’t right. At this moment, Amy was comfortably numb. stagnant and slowly dying inside.

(Wake me up) wake me up inside (I can’t wake up), wake me up inside
(Save me) call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up) bid my blood to run (I can’t wake up) before I come undone
(Save me) save me from the nothing I’ve become

Amy sought to break free from being emotionally drained. Any desperately wanted to snap out of this funk, to become alive and excited about life.

Now that I know what I’m without, you can’t just leave me
Breathe into me and make me real, bring (bring) me (me) to life

This is either a cry for help to a friend or a prayer to God to be awakened from this emotional slumber deep inside her soul.

(Wake me up) wake me up inside (I can’t wake up), wake me up inside
(Save me) call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up) bid my blood to run (I can’t wake up) before I come undone
(Save me) save me from the nothing I’ve become

Amy is losing hope that she’ll ever break free from the darkness of her current condition.

Bring me to life
I’ve been livin’ a lie
There’s nothing inside
Bring me to life

Amy is looking for a spark to jump start her life back in the right direction.

Frozen (frozen) inside without your touch, without your love
Darling, only (only) you are the life among the dead
All this time, I can’t believe I couldn’t see
Kept in the dark, but you were there in front of me
I’ve been sleeping a thousand years, it seems
Got to open my eyes to everything
Without a thought, without a voice, without a soul
Don’t let me die here, there must be something more
Bring me to life

Reaching out for help, Amy is ready to be set free from living behind an emotional facade.

(Wake me up) wake me up inside (I can’t wake up), wake me up inside
(Save me) call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up) bid my blood to run (I can’t wake up) before I come undone
(Save me) save me from the nothing I’ve become

Sometimes we need a friend to come to the rescue when nobody notices your pain.

Bring me to life
I’ve been livin’ a lie (bring me to life)
There’s nothing inside
Bring me to life

This is a prayer than many people have for the start of 2026, to feel alive once again.

Final Thoughts:

A first century Pharisee named Nicodemus was going through a similar situation when he reached out to Jesus. Like Amy, Nicodemus felt lost, unsure of himself until their conversation in John 3. Nicodemus uses sarcasm to hide his uncertainty of being brought back to life. Nicodemus suddenly stops talking and listens to one of the most powerful statements in the Bible. Like Amy, Nicodemus was brought back to life by the end of John 20. This is the spiritual solution to emotional problems, Matthew 11:28-30.

Inspiration Behind No Easy Way Out:

Robert Tepper’s song No Easy Way Out was a perfect fit for the Rocky IV soundtrack. While some may refer to Robert as a one hit wonder, this hit was huge and is brought back to life during monthly Rocky marathons on cable television. No Easy Way Out is an anthem for driven individuals who avoid taking short cuts in life. Rather, this fighter mentality urges listeners to face their challenges, obstacles and trials head on.

Biblical Application:

If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters,[a] you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come, 1 Timothy 4:6-8.

Exegesis of No Easy Way Out:

We’re not indestructible
Baby, better get that straight
I think it’s unbelievable
How you give into the hands of fate

In the context of Rocky IV, Rocky has just agreed to fight Ivan Drago who just killed his friend Apollo Creed in what was supposed to be a friendly bout. After an argument with his wife. Rocky gets in his car to blow off steam.

Some things are worth fighting for
Some feelings never die
I’m not askin’ for another chance
I just wanna know why

Rocky is a fighter who only knows how to fight. This is what he does. Unfortunately, his wife doesn’t understand.

There’s no easy way out
There’s no shortcut home
There’s no easy way out
Givin’ in can’t be wrong

As the chorus begins, Rocky is going to have to train like he has never trained before. Taking a shortcut may result in his own death.

I don’t wanna pacify you
I don’t wanna drag you down
But I’m feelin’ like a prisoner
Like a stranger in a no named town

Rocky feels like he has to fight Drago even if his own wife doesn’t think he has a chance.

I see all the angry faces
Afraid that could be you and me
Talkin’ about what might have been
I’m thinkin’ about what it used to be

Rocky’s decision has put a strain on his marriage, going to Russia alone to train.

There’s no easy way out
There’s no shortcut home
There’s no easy way out
Givin’ in can’t be wrong

Accepting this challenge is the only logical choice for Rocky to make in his mind.

Baby, baby, we can shed this skin
We can know how we feel inside
Instead of goin’ down an endless road
Not knowin’ if we’re dead or alive

Unfortunately, Rocky’s relationship with his wife is on cold ice, not sure if he can repair his marriage after the boxing match with Drago.

Some things are worth fightin’ for
Some feelings never die
I’m not askin’ for another chance
I just wanna know why

Any type of questionable decision will put a strain on a relationship.

There’s no easy way out
There’s no shortcut home
There’s no easy way out
Givin’ in, givin’ in can’t be wrong, no

Rocky believes he is making the right decision by fighting Drago.

There’s no easy way out
(There’s no easy way out)
There’s no shortcut home
(There’s no shortcut home)
There’s no easy way out
(There’s no easy, no easy, no easy way out)

Taking short cuts while training will result in defeat, death or both.

There’s no easy way out
(There’s no easy way out)
There’s no shortcut home
(There’s no shortcut home)
There’s no easy way out
(There’s no easy, no easy, no easy way out)
There’s no easy way out
There’s no shortcut home
There’s no easy way out

These are the thoughts racing through Rocky’s head as he returns home.

Final Thoughts:

In this age of NIL (Name, Image and Likeness), athletes are losing the hunger to win. As high school athletes are now getting paid to play a specific sport, they are losing their competitive advantage, the Eye of the Tiger. Although certain professional athletes may not get the attention that they deserve. However, as long as they individuals avoid taking short cuts along the way, fame or fortune will come over time for this relentless hard work.
