Inspiration Behind Poison:

The song Poison was written and produced by Dr. Freeze who is Elliott Straite. Straite had planned for Poison to be on his next album until members of Bell Biv DeVoe heard his demo version. This song serves as a cautionary warning for men about women whose beauty masks dangerous or manipulative intentions. Once in one of these toxic relationships, emotional and or financial harm often follow.

Biblical Application:

A foolish child is a father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like the constant dripping of a leaky roof. 14 Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the Lord, Proverbs 19:13-14.

There are always girls in high school who have a certain reputation that may be true or not. The curious might try to find out for themselves. While the guarded never want to find out. I was shy for most of high school, so I didn’t have any girlfriends until late in my sophomore year. The older I got, the more I preferred to go out on a date or two before entering a serious relationship. Unfortunately, the timing of a relationship also matters as people you may like were already dating a classmate. This is the complexity of relationships. I never dated someone who was poison but in this era of infidelity, I could see dangers of being with someone who was always thinking about the next person they wanted to be with. This in my mind is a poisonness relationship.

Inspiration Behind Evil Woman:

The lyrics of Evil woman stems from the turbulent relationships that were prevalent during the 1970s. The Electric Light Orchestra wasn’t referring to a specific woman. Rather as society rapidly changed, interpersonal relationships were challenged by the rise of the feminist movement and the sexual revolution. This empowerment of women inspired the lyrics of this classic song.

Biblical Application:

Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife, Proverbs 25:24.

Either one of many of the band members had unpleasant interactions with woman. This woman either dumped him or broke off dreams of marriage.

Since ELO was writing about a specific cultural trend that was making women of this era cruel, they just couldn’t believe the depths of their devious ways. The older I become, the less I enjoy hanging around negative people. When an individual becomes too toxic, I try to stay as far away from this person as possible. While some women may simply be misunderstood, the longer you hang around a pessimistic person, the more you will become like them. Perhaps, this is why God wants human beings to flee from all evil.

Inspiration Behind You Can Do Magic:

Following Dan Peek’s departure from the band America, this former soft rock giant went nearly a decade without a hit song. You Can Do Magic was conceived using out of the box thinking. After making a couple of chord changes, the lyrics to You Can Do Magic quickly followed. This song’s meaning refers to a woman who brings the supernatural powers of love.

Biblical Application:

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.’” 6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. 7 But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt, Exodus 8:5-7.

Like newlyweds on their honeymoon, the reality of married life will become real with challenges. Subsequently, Jehovah Jireh, God provides, is the one who I credit for the blessings in my own life. God is the ultimate source of supernatural love.

Sam Cooke – A Change Is Gonna Come (Official Lyric Video)

Inspiration Behind Change is Gonna Come:

Change is Gonna Come was a response to the racial tensions and injustices that were prevalent in the United States in 1963. Following the release of Change is Gonna Come, this song has become an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement. With the rise of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Sam was full of belief, hope and faith that change will come in the near future.

Biblical Application:

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me, Psalm 51:10-12.

Exegesis of Change is Gonna Come:

Sam didn’t have much when she was born. Yet, like a flowing river, she kept moving downstream.

There were many things that Sam saw or witnessed that she didn’t think was fair. Yet, deep down inside, she believed that change would happen sometime in the future.

Growing up as a black woman in America has been tough. Yet, she’s not ready to die, unsure of her eternal destiny.

Sam thought that things would have improved by now, but she hasn’t lost hope for Civil Rights to become a reality.

I go to the movie
And I go downtown

Sam still goes into town to watch movies.

And somebody keep telling me
“Don’t hang around”

Despite comments about being unwanted around town, this didn’t stop her from living.

It’s been a long
A long time coming, but I know

There is no doubt in Sam’s mind that Civil Right for African Americans will come soon.

Then, I go to my brother
And I say, “Brother, help me, please”
But he winds up knockin’ me
Back down on my knees, oh

However, maintaining hope wasn’t easy, physically knocked down after asking for help.

There been times that I thought
I couldn’t last for long
But now, I think I’m able
To carry on

Sam also lost hope in the darkest times of uncivil acts against her. But the rise of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was enough to help her tarry on with life.

It’s been a long
A long time coming, but I know

The numerous trials and tribulations that Sam endured could not hold her down for long as her belief for change came.

Final Thoughts:

The melody of Change is Gonna Come reminds me of some of the old hymns that I sung in church growing up. Spending 3 years attending public school in inner city Wilmington, Delaware, I came face to face with poverty. Although Sam doesn’t mention being a woman of faith, she persevered like Queen Esther in the Old Testament. Change is Gonna Come serves as a reminder of the past and provides hope that current and future issues will be resolved.

Men At Work – Down Under (Official HD Video)

Inspiration Behind Down Under:

 Colin Hay and Ron Strykert started writing Down Under in 1980, finishing this a year later. What began as an attempt to promote Australia to the world, ended in a loss of country spirit due to overdevelopment and exploitation of their beloved land. These lyrics highlight Colin’s travel abroad, including Brussels. Men at Work’s upbeat, reggae-infused anthem celebrates Australian identity, but takes a swipe at globalization and cultural preservation.

Biblical Application:

For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. 11 They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. 12 One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.”[c] 13 This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith, Titus 1:10-13.

Exegesis of Down Under:

Traveling in a fried-out Kombi
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous

Colin provides a vivid description of his travels abroad. He either tries to reveal who he met or embellishes. Despite the backwardness, she was hospitable.

“Do you come from a land down under
Where women glow and men plunder?

You better run, you better take cover”

The chorus elevate woman of Australia and take a swipe at men. The thunder could be a storm or a herd of animals coming quickly in your direction.

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six-foot-four and full of muscle

He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich
And he said

Colin reveals a specific story about trying to overcome the language barrier, getting more than he asked for.

Final Thoughts:

Men at Work arrived in America when I was in Junior High. Something about their unique sound made me a fan early on. I bought their first 2 albums, playing them almost every night before going to sleep. While my favorite songs are on the Blue for You album, 1983, Down Under has that classic summer sound with lyrics full of travel.

Thin Lizzy – The Boys Are Back In Town (Official Lyric Video)

Inspiration Behind the Boys are Back in Town:

While this song is referring to the Manchester underworld, sports broadcasters in America use Thin Lizzy’s The Boys are Back in Town as a way to let fans know that their baseball team is back in town. One of the theories is that the boys are referring to the Quality Street Gang who Thin Lizzy encountered as a child at his mother’s nightclub. Members of this group were known for their sharp stylish attire worn at local clubs.

Biblical Application:

A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil. 20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm, Proverbs 13:19-20.

Exegesis of the Boys are Back in Town:

Guess who just got back today
Them wild-eyed boys that had been away
Haven’t changed, hadn’t much to say
But, man, I still think them cats are crazy

Either Thin Lizzy has been out at one of the local Manchester clubs or a friend let him know that members of the Quality Street Gang are back.

Some of the guys were looking for an old friend.

Every town has a local hangout that is hopping every weekend. For me, this place was the Charcoal Pit, a diner on the main drag which served great ice cream dishes. With a mini jukebox in every booth, teenagers were coming and going throughout the night, bouncing to the music. If I wanted to see one of my friends, this is where I would go either on or after my date. Some of my fondest memories of high school occurred at the Charcoal Pit. Subsequently, I understand Thin Lizzy’s desire to connect with old friends.

Eye of the Tiger was written for Rocky II, featuring the rematch between Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa. Slyvester Stallone worked with Survivor to ensure that the lyrics fit into the theme’s resilience and triumph. The concept of developing the Eye of the Tiger became a cultural phenomenon in the 1980’s as athletics went into strict training to obtain this mental edge.

Biblical Application:

Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come, 1 Timothy 4:7-8.

Exegesis of Eye of the Tiger:

In Rocky I, Rocky went the distance but lost the judge’s decision to Apollo. Once the date for a rematch was set, Rocky went into strict training to prepare for this title bout.

Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

Once you reach a certain level in sports, don’t let glory steal your passion. Stay hungry, don’t settle for anything less and develop a mental toughness to keep your dreams alive.

Trainers are looking to give their boxer the mental edge, void of any fear. This is where athletics are tested to push their body to the limits. The goal is to out prepare your opponent and acquire the Eye of the Tiger, waiting to pounce on your opponent at the moment they show signs of weakness.

This stanza speaks to the competitive nature, drive and hunger that elite athletes possess.

This chorus highlights the mindset that Rocky adopted going into this title fight. The Eye of the Tiger is associated with a refusal to lose, despite what the odds may be.

Rocky is trying to repeat his incredible feat in Rocky I, but this time wanting to end this bout walking home with the title belt.

I ran cross-country and swam in high school. Before any race or swimming event, I would be listening to my Walkman, getting pumped up before this competition. While I never reached my full potential due to a major ankle reconstruction surgery, music pushed me to reach new heights Listening to Eye of the Tiger lead me to reach personal records running and swimming. This is the impact that Eye of the Tiger had on my life.

The Message Behind the Music-January 20

Inspiration Behind Mr. Roboto:

Styx was way ahead of its time in the creation of Mr. Roboto on their Kilroy Was Here Album in 1983. Song writer Dennis DeYoung was fascinated by a documentary on robots that he watched. Dennis became concerned with how the automation of new technology would have on future blue-collar jobs. Subsequently, this led to the theme of non-conformists trying to escape from oppressive authorities.

Biblical Application:

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward,[a] they found a plain in Shinar[b] and settled there.3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” 5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other,” Genesis 11:1-7.

This song starts off in Japanese. At this time in history, Japan was introducing automation into the car industry, threatening the job security of auto workers.

With parts made in Japan (secret, secret, I’ve got a secret)
I am thee modern man

Like any new invention, high ranking company leaders aren’t always honest and open of how new technology will impact future jobs. This is the secret kept from current employees until their real intentions are finally made public. The modern man is made of steel.

I’ve got a secret, I’ve been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain IBM
So if you see me acting strangely, don’t be surprised
I’m just a man who needed someone and somewhere to hide to keep me alive

Computers were the first step toward artificial intelligence. The lyrics of this stanza remind me of the 2004 science fiction film I-Robot which dealt with similar concerns.

I’m just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control

From the corporate management perspective, robots would save companies money over time. Robots didn’t need health insurance or other expensive benefits, just daily and weekly maintenance performed by a computer and skilled mechanic. With robots now in use, there is no going back, seizing control of the auto industry.

In the end, the real plan for robots is cheaper labor at a higher efficiency and productivity.

American companies began to ship blue-collar jobs oversea0s, handing China dominance over the production of consumer goods. When robots took over factories convincing the labor force that you’re too good to work in this industry. Unfortunately, this initial thanks turned into regret.

The problem’s plain to see

Machines dehumanize

A paycheck that once went to hard working men and women have vanished from cities across the country. This all occurred because human beings placed their trust in innovative machines rather than human minds hungry for a nice paycheck.

This was the plan all along, to save companies money by replacing human beings with robots.

Kilroy is the protagonist in this song, the lead character, similar to Sonny in I-Robot.

Final Thoughts:

Mr. Roboto questions if robots should have been created in the first place. In modern times, the same debate is occurring over artificial intelligence. Sometimes entrepreneurs are so excited about the vision for their idea that they don’t think about how their invention will impacts society. Building new things aren’t bad, but certain projects like the Tower of Babel was off limits.

The Age of Deception and Seduction

The signs of this new age are everywhere. Advertisements, commercials. grocery store magazines, social media, and television. Sex sells went from a marketing plan in the 1980’s to a reality that has ushered in the age of deception and seduction. The American rock band Van Halen sang about a fantasy in Hot for Teacher in 1984 but this is now a weekly occurrence as female and male teachers are having sex with minors.

Why do you misunderstand what I say? It is because you are unable to hear what I am saying. [You cannot bear to listen to My message; your ears are shut to My teaching.] 44 You are of your father, the devil, and it is your will to practice the lusts and gratify the desires [which are characteristic] of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a falsehood, he speaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar [himself] and the father of lies and of all that is false, John 8:44.

One of Jesus’ disciples’ points to the source of this deception and seduction. John remembers the day that Jesus blamed the Devil, giving this spiritual creature a nickname that still holds true: the father of all lies. Nonetheless, a second glance at the Tree of Knowledge is no different than any other daily decision to give into temptation. Like the prodigal son, the ecstasy of earthly pleasures replaces common sense.

And when the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his place of confinement, 8 And he will go forth to deceive and seduce and lead astray the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth—Gog and Magog—to muster them for war; their number is like the sand of the sea, Revelation 20:7-8.

Unfortunately, it takes reaching the bottom of the barrel to wake up, Luke 15:15-16, and snap out of deception and seduction. As one of my former pastors preached about, sin stays longer than you ever expected. Like breaking any bad habit, you have to develop a sense of urgency to break free from addiction. May today’s blog serve as a turning point so you escape the wrath of God, Hebrews 10:26-27.

Where Do You Go From Here?

Everyone will hit that proverbial bump in the road at some point in life.  This moment of inconvenience could be a quick pit stop, a rough stretch or turn into a dead end.  If the latter is you, its hard to start over, especially if you’re not sure where to go from here.

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me, Philippians 3:12.

Upon receiving the news of my most recent rejection from Hollywood, fourth in five years, I’m starting to have second thoughts on my writing career.  Part of me truly believed my latest script Dragged Behind the Devil’ s Door would be a box office hit, but now that reality is setting in I wonder if I’m on the right track or simply chasing some improbable fantasy.

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, Philippians 3:13.

Perhaps the apostle Paul went through a similar phase during his first century mission trips throughout the Middle East.  Instead of seeing progress, Paul experienced failure, persecution and suffering.  While writing a letter to one of his favorite churches, Paul had a vision that gave him direction for the last portion of his life.  May the words above serve as a message of hope to those ready to give up, quit or abandon your calling.  Although I’m not sure what role writing will play in the next stage of my life, I need to forget past disappointments by straining toward what is ahead, eternal life with Christ my Lord.
