Inspiration Behind Celebration:

Celebration was conceived out of spiritual reflection and a moment of musical intuition. Ronald Bell had an image from the moment when God created Adam, with angels celebrating and singing praises. However, during the collaboration of Celebration, Robert Bell recalls one of the band members saying, “come on, let’s celebrate.” Regardless of this disagreement, Celebration has become part of weddings for the past 50 years.

Biblical Application:

The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad. 25 Lord, save us!  Lord, grant us success! – Psalm 118:24-25

When a leader sets the tone, there is no question that this celebration will be successful.

Final Thoughts:

I remember dancing to Celebration for the first time at my sister Kathie’s wedding. This tune hasn’t grown old in the past 40 years since. In a world filled of negativity, its good hear positivity in the form of the song Celebration. If human beings would learn to focus on the good things in life, this world would become a better place to live.

Tears For Fears – Everybody Wants To Rule The World (Official Music Video)

Inspiration Behind Everybody Wants to Rule the World:

Tears for Fears were trying to figure out what the America music industry was looking for. This quest coincided with a cultural observation and political conversation. Tears for Fears tried to emulate the Boys of Summer by Don Henley which at the time was radio friendly. Everybody Wants to Rule the World examined the struggle for power, the Cold War and the Berlin Wall. These references set the stage for one of Tears for Fears greatest hits.

Biblical Application:

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains, Matthew 24:4-8.

Exegesis of Everybody Wants to Rule the World:

An interesting play on words, suggesting that even when you stop to rest, the world doesn’t stop and the government/officials will find you.

Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on Mother Nature
Everybody wants to rule the world

There is a battle for control. You can control yourself, but not the weather or individuals who are hungry for power.

It’s my own design
It’s my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the

What goes on within the decision-making process.

Most of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever

Freedoms come and go depending upon who is in control of your country.

There’s a room where the light won’t find you

A reference to the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War.

Progress always comes with compromise. This give and take may make you less free than you were the day before.

The powers at the present are working behind the scenes to control the narrative. As this fight for control only intensifies, headlines that you read and see in the news will be deceiving.

All for freedom and for pleasure

Political sides win and lose as control is handed off to new leaders, struggling for ultimate control.

Final Thoughts:

There is a saying in politics, “never let a crisis or emergency be wasted.” Immediately after the Coronavirus was announced, state and local governments decided what was safe and what wasn’t. A few businesses were allowed to open while others had their doors shut for good. This abuse of power fits into the theme of Everybody Wants to Rule the World. Hopefully, if there is a next time, citizens won’t be as gullible and begin to ask critical questions to their leaders. If it means being cancelled, so be it as long as the search for the truth prevails in the end.

Undo Me – Jennifer Knapp (Official Music Video)

Inspiration Behind Undo Me:

Jennifer Knapp uses Undo Me as a way to apologize to her family. The lyrics speak to confessions in relationships with her father, sister, mother and brother. This stems from growing uo in a broken home, resulting in the divorce of her parents. When Jennifer became a Christian in college, she uses this song to mend the fences of broken relationships from her past. Undo Me also serves as a personal prayer to become more like Jesus.

Biblical Application:

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us, 1 John 1:8-10.

Exegesis of Undo Me:

Jennifer is blaming herself for something she did or said to escalate a situation at home. Human nature in the form of her flesh got the best of Jennifer. Jenifer also realizes that she set her sister off as well.

Time to get down on my knees
And pray, “Lord, undo me

‘Til You own this spirit through me, Lord
Undo me”

These events lead Jennifer to pray. She is seeking to undo her sinful ways, to be replaced by the Holy Spirit.

While the world shook its head in shame, I let you take the blame

Yeah, yeah, yeah

Jennifer know turns her attention to her mother who is likely living on her own after the divorce. The shame reference is probably the cause or reason for her parents’ divorce. Finally, Jennifer apologizes to her brother who looked up to her.

Well, I know it must be, yeah…

Instead, I hurt you deeply with my actions and tongue.

Time to get down on my knees
And pray, “Lord, undo me

A prayer for change, to break free from these unholy actions.

The painful reality of the present.

Jennifer confesses to denying her faith despite all that God has down for her.

When you fall from God’s grace, pray for forgiveness and mercy.

Final Thoughts:

Every human being has their own prodigal moment or phase in life, Luke 15. It’s only when you hit rock bottom that you come to your senses. As the month of May comes to an end, don’t be afraid to pour out your heart to God. If and when you do, James 5:16, you’ll feel a whole lot better moving forward.

Corey Hart – Never Surrender

Inspiration Behind Never Surrender:

Corey Hart’s Never Surrender was inspired by historical and personal values taught to him by his mother. Corey’s mother instilled within him the mindset of never quitting or giving up on your dreams. Corey also drew from Winston Churchill’s famous speech Never Surrender. during the dark days of World War II. Corey’s song stands as a personal anthem to anyone battling depression, keep fighting and Never Surrender.

Biblical Application:

I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength, Philippians 4:10-13.

Exegesis of Never Surrender:

Corey is either referring to Winston Churchill or asking his mom for more time. Uncertainty has closed some doors and Corey is not sure what to do.

Likely a reference to Churchill to encourage his troops while Germany was winning.

Final Thoughts:

While I was a big Corey Hart fan in high school, the story behind Never Surrender makes me wish I knew this back then. When Music Television came out in 1983, I ran from the bus stop to a friend’s house who had cable to watch Behind the Music. I was always fascinated by the backstory to a successful song. Never Surrender provides sound advice to anyone in life on the verge of quitting or giving up on their dreams. Keep battling and never surrender.

Inspiration Behind Send Me an Angel:

Created for the Scorpions’ Crazy World album, Send Me an Angel is not a typical song associated with this rock group. However, when faced with desperation, unlikely individuals crave, desire and want divine intervention. Send Me an Angel was a team effort with Klaus Meine writing the lyrics, Adolf Schenker composing the melody and the band members adding their insight to complete Send Me an Angel.

Biblical Application:

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, 10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; Psalm 91:9-11,

Exegesis of Send Me an Angel:

Wise man said just walk this way
To the dawn of the light
Wind will blow into your face
As the years pass you by
Hear this voice from deep inside
It’s the call of your heart
Close your eyes and you will find
Passage out of the dark

Klaus isn’t clear on who this wise man is or perhaps an ode to Aerosmith. This opening stanza begins with a specific time when the wind will blow in passing years. Klaus is either referring to a conscience or the tugging on your soul. The final 2 lines suggest a form of meditation or visualization.

This changes to a request, asking God to send him an angel. The last 2 lines suggest looking out into the heavens.

A combination of metaphors and perspective wjile in the middle of a storm. Look for the good things in life, but be careful of the thorns, the rough edges of human beings.

At some point in life, we all hit rock bottom, unable to escape the spiritual rut human beings are stuck in. Subsequently, why not cry out to God for help. Part of the healing process is recognizing that you can’t do it or make it on your own. Angel are real entities, servants of God sent to help the lost, lonely or forgotten. Don’t take no for an answer. Wrestle with God until an angel arrives.

Stellar Kart: Ones and Zeros (Audio)

Inspiration Behind Ones and Zeros:

The Ones and Zeros represent an anthem for unity and the value of human life despite the flaws, imperfections and weaknesses that exist within every human being. Not everyone is a gifted athlete who can shine on a ballfield. We are all created differently, diverse with special gifts and talents that either go unappreciated or unrecognized until later on in life. The opening lyrics point to human fragility, falling down time after time. Despite whatever failures you may endure in life, Ones and Zeros speak to being incomplete, living and learning via trial and errors.

Biblical Application:

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully, Romans 12:3-8.

Exegesis of Ones and Zeros:

It’s the sound that echoes through the night

This song starts with a childhood song about making mistakes in life. Failure and humility often lead human beings to withdraw, living in the shadows of the gifted and talented. To those who rarely succeed, fear may keep you from taking chances in life. While there may be hope for redemption, doubt and unbelief can erode any glimpses of hope. The final 3 lines leading up to the chorus serve as a call that you are not alone.

We are the ones

The beautiful incomplete
We are the ones
We are the future heroes
A colorful symphony
We are the ones

While it’s never pleasant to fail, the chorus encourages the individuals labeled as ones and zeros to come together. Don’t view this as a permeant status. Rather, as a work in progress. While you may currently be incomplete, you have a bright future.

The dawn or the twilight

We’re all to blame
Chosen for freedom with undue worth
Standing for something that can’t be earned

This stanza serves as a reminder that life is hard as human beings are flawed, fallen creatures with a tendency to fail. Although it’s one thing to accept this reality, you don’t have to live in this humbled state your entire life. There is a message of hope that exists.

Don’t look at yourself as who you are. Begin to see the person that you will become. This positive mindset opens the door to be elevated to the status of future hero. Don’t let failure hold you down. Rise above the ashes of defeat.

Final Thoughts:

After starting my baseball coaching career with 3 straight championships, my 4th year was a complete and total disaster. Injuries and lost players sent this team into a long losing streak to start the season. Every week we found new ways to lose a game. It was during this season that I stumbled upon Ones and Zeros by Stellar Kart. I created a mix for practices, adding this song to my playlist. Although the message of Ones and Zeros may not have resonated with every player, this team improved immensely, battling to the final out. While we were offensively challenged, we did sniff out a few wins before losing in the first round of the playoffs. Whenever I feel defeated today, I play Ones and Zeros to remind me that life is a journey, as human beings are a work in progress.

The Message Behind the Music-April 30

Joan Osborne – One Of Us

Inspiration Behind One of Us:

Joan Osborne began to question the nature of God and the role faith plays. Meanwhile, if you do have a personal encounter with God, the lyrics prepare listeners for this experience. Co-writer of One of Us, Eric Bazilian, sought to provoke thoughts and challenge any previous assumptions about God. Joan of Arcadia, a drama on CBS that aired for two seasons, adopted One of Us as its theme song. The lyrics fit well into the concept of God speaking face to face with a high school girl.

Biblical Application:

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[b] and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days, Acts 10:44-48.

Exegesis of One of Us:

So one of these nights and about twelve o’clock

Joan brings up the second coming of Jesus. An open-ended question is used as if to ask, when Jesus does return will you be ready, prepared?

If God had a name, what would it be?
And would you call it to His face
If you were faced with Him in all His glory?
What would you ask if you had just one question?

Eric and Joan use questions and thoughts about God’s nature in this stanza. Yet if you did have an encounter with God, what would it be like.

Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah

Basic assumptions about God.

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin’ to make His way home?

This stanza challenges people to be aware of your surroundings, maybe an angel or God is sitting next to you?

If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like Heaven and in Jesus and the saints
And all the prophets?

Thoughts about seeing verse believing. Faith without sight.

Acknowledging God’s greatness.

The Girardi Family in Joan of Arcadia are Catholic which either explains this reference to the Pope or that many Americans were raised in Roman Catholic churches.

Assuming that the current Pope is in tune with God, keeping in step with the Holy Spirit, Galatians 5:25.

Final Thoughts:

The Joan of Arcadia series is one of the closest that Hollywood has come to identifying biblical traits of a living God. While some of the theology of this drama is warped, I watched episodes from season 2 on You-Tube. Although the quality may not be great, watching this series made me examine my faith and become more proactive in sharing my faith. Watching all 40 plus episodes will help stretch your concepts about God being one of us.

Mandisa – Overcomer

Inspiration Behind Overcomer:

Mandisa wrote Overcomer following the death of a close friend. Keisha was diagnosed with breast cancer and wasn’t able to recover, claiming another victim to this deadly disease. Mandisa took her friend’s death hard, battling anxiety, hopelessness and suicidal thoughts. The lyrics of Overcomer serve as a personal journey to recover and overcome future adversities in life.

Biblical Application:

Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.” 31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. 33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world,” John 16:29-33.

Mandisa is going for a drive to clear her mind. She’s listening to Toby Mac, looking for a ray of hope with nothing seeming to be going right in life.

Whatever it is you may be going through

Mandisa points to the lives of her listeners, encouraging them to lean on God so that these daily troubles don’t get the best of you.

You’re an overcomer
Stay in the fight ’til the final round
You’re not going under (you’re not going under)

The chorus points to a boxer, staying on their feet until the final round. Let God be your strength.

Feeling like it’s hopeless

Bounce back in life by having the faith of an overcomer.

Mandisa appears to point to the words of Hebrews 12:1-3. Keep your head up by fixing your eyes upon Jesus.

Final Thoughts:

When one of my best friends from high school died of cancer, I was devastated. Maureen’s death took years to overcome, but this struggle led me to become a youth pastor. Each trial that you face in life provide opportunities for spiritual growth. While you might not handle each one well, keep pressing on. If you do, you’ll understand the feeling of becoming an overcomer.

That’s All explores the complexities and frustrations of relationships. The lyrics highlight the differences in opinions and perspectives in life. That’s All points to the realization of all unresolved differences. Instead of constantly arguing, debating and opening fresh wounds to your soul, That’s All a way of accepting that neither side is willing to budge.

Biblical Application:

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God, Romans 8:5-8.

Some days that are going well can be interrupted by a firm rebuke. For Phil Collins, this happens regularly. This pattern of disagreement is getting old,

Living in this type of environment will wear down your soul. Stubbornness appears to be slowing deteriorating this relationship, on the verge of collapse.

Final Thoughts:

Sometimes mentors can help hold a marriage together until both couples make the necessary changes to become closer. Unfortunately, many individuals give up, not willing to fight anymore to salvage their relationship. Movies like Fireproof illustrate what needs to happen before genuine reconciliation can be achieved. These steps may seem drastic, but are essential to avoid experiencing the atmosphere detailed in That’s All.

Kenny Loggins – Danger Zone (Official Audio – Top Gun)

Inspiration Behind Danger Zone:

Tom Whitlock and Giorgio Moroder were assigned to create a song for the original Top Gun film. This track needed to resonate with this film’s theme of adrenaline, speed and thrill of naval aviation. This song’s title was inspired by the opening scenes using an aircraft carrier flight deck. Ultimately, Danger Zone also refers to the threat of war, entering an arena where flight school is over and the real thing is about to take place.

Biblical Application:

t is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen[c] away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace, Hebrews 6:4-6.

Referring to a pilot going through a checklist just before takeoff.

Once a naval fighter plane is launched off the flight deck, the crew is heading into enemy territory.

This points to the adrenaline before takeoff.

Reaching an aircraft carrier means flight school is over, and this is the real thing.

You’ll never know what you can do
Until you get it up as high as you can go

Nothing compares to experience. Once the pilot and wing man learn to work togther, they will begin to realize their full potential as a team.

The top pilots at this elite school want to be where the action is.

Action refers to where the war, real fighting is taking place.

Final Thoughts:

The spiritual danger zone is highlighted by today’s featured Bible verse. Hebrews 6 points to a Christian who knows the Bible but fails to practice anything that they are taught. This pattern of behavior leads to apathy, causing Christians to become spiritual numb. Every time a pilot is in the air, they learn something about how their jet handles certain conditions. The same thing happens daily to Christians if they are alert, sober and watchful. Spiritual foundations are built by putting the teachings of Jesus into practice, Matthew 7:24.
