The Message Behind the Music-January 18

Inspiration Behind Another Brick in the Wall Part 2:

Roger Water’s personal experiences growing up in Great Britan left a negative impression of their educational system. When Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister, her conservative views strengthened Roger’s convictions about the oppressive and strict nature of schools. When teenagers are stifled and misunderstood, rebellion often follows. This is the background which led Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 to become an anthem for rising up against established order.

Biblical Application:

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son, Hebrews 12:5-6.

Exegesis of Another Brick in the Wall Part 2:

We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teacher, leave them kids alone

Nearly fifty years after the release of this song, the member of Pink Floyd got their wish. Education has become an institution for grooming children as discipline is now considered racist and teachers have lost control of their classrooms.

Hey, teacher, leave them kids alone!
All in all, it’s just another brick in the wall
All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall

Education in Great Britain and the United States is now broken. A 1960 high school diploma required more work than a modern-day college degree. Meanwhile, high school seniors continue to graduate without the ability to properly read or write.

We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers, leave them kids alone

This stanza reminds me of Communist, Marxist and Socialist countries who dumb down education so that a new general of young people will embrace communism. This likely explains why New York City just elected a democratic socialist.

Hey, teacher! Leave us kids alone!
All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall
All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall

This modern-day brick in the wall is symbolic of a failing education system. Teachers are spending so more time trying to control unruly children that time for learning is limited.

Wrong, do it again
Wrong, do it again
If you don’t eat your meat, you can’t have any pudding
How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?
You! Yes! You, behind the bike sheds!
Stand still, laddie!

This stanza is trying to emulate a teacher running a strict classroom in the late 1970’s. While certain teachers don’t relate to students, discipline is a sign of love. If you don’t care about children, you won’t correct wrong behavior. A classroom without rules results in chaos.

Final Thoughts:

As a former teacher, school isn’t for everyone. In America, modern-day education has been created by women for women. As activities like recess and classes like gym have been removed from a growing number of schools, boys have been left behind. While Charter and Vocational schools are on the right track, active learning is necessary to keep students engaged. However, education must focus on the basics: reading, writing and arithmetic. Once ideology and the political correctness is removed, schools can get back to equipping young people for success in the future.

Access Denied

Whether you are at home, school or work, if you’re careless when you enter your password into a computer, access will be denied.  Perhaps, you accidentally hit the caps button.  Or maybe your finger touched two keys at the same time.  Regardless of your mistake, black dots prevent you from seeing where you went wrong.  Instead, you are rejected, having to repeat the same process without a flaw to gain the access you desire.

When it comes to talking to God, many share a similar frustration, desperately seeking answers to their prayers.  Nonetheless, countless individuals are given the silent treatment, left in the dark by a God unwilling to tell you why at least for the moment.  Whether your situation is sin related or not, Isaiah 1:15, being shut out of the conversation has caused some to abandon God.

Paul likely endured periods of doubt during his years of ministry as an apostle.  However, while in Rome, the Holy Spirit brought Paul a clear message in Romans 5:1-4.  If access is denied, faith carries you until God opens the next door for you to walk through.  When you do sin, grace is provided to allow you to enter God’s presence.  Therefore, if you are struggling to connect with God, remember the words of Hebrews 11:1-6 until your access is reinstated.

Be Careful What You Long For

Based upon recent jaw dropping news from Florida, I guess you can say Van Halen’s 1984 song Hot for Teacher was ahead of its time.  According to a report from Lakeland Police, a 29 year old English teacher has been fired for having sex with 3 boys who were all 17 at the time.  While David Lee Roth initially sang this song as a dream, this fantasy has become reality in too many communities across the country.

The Bible warns readers about the dangers of temptation in James 1:13-15.  When an individual begins to long for something outside of God’s will, your mind loses its ability to think rationally.  Once enticed, humans become like fish unable to turn down Satan’s bait.  Subsequently, lust prompts people to engage in sin like the April 14, 2014 piece in the Lakeland Ledger.

No one is immune to this desire.  If you place yourself into a precarious position, sooner or later you are going to fall, indulging in acts that you log for.  Teenagers who think their faith is strong are often overwhelmed by college, succumbing to alcohol, drugs and rejecting God until its convenient to come back to church.  Perhaps, the apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 6:14-17 are a firm warning to anyone on the fence.  Be careful what you long for because bad company corrupts good character, no matter what your intentions may be.

What do you think about the current moral decay across the country?

I Can’t Do Anything

After rededicating my life to God during the second semester of my freshmen year of college, everything gradually fell back into place for me.  Every position I applied for except for one I received, in some cases having to decline offers.  From 1988-2010, life seemed easy, like I could do anything I put my mind to.  When the school I was teaching for began to struggle financially and eventually was sold during the school year, I actually thought I would make a smooth transition to another career.  Unfortunately, almost one year later, I was dead wrong!

When you are blessed with many talents, sometimes you get over confident or don’t work as hard as you are use to like first round draft picks in professional sports.  Then again, technology has drastically changed from the days of Cad, MS-Dos and Word Perfect when I graduated from the University of Delaware.  Anyway, I have gone from thinking I could do anything to a fear I can’t do anything right.  Solomon was right when he said, “humility comes before honor,” Proverbs 16:33b.  I just hope the humility part of my life has come to an end or is about to conclude.

As for now, its back to the drawing board.  Instead of having a touch of gold, my cover letters and resumes have turned into fools gold.  Despite these setbacks, I am laying in prayers of friends and relying on the words of Scripture to slowly restore my self-confidence.  However, I am no longer naive about my current state.  Alone, I can’t do anything but try, cry and try again,  In the long run, Proverbs 16:9 will determine where I land or where I fall.  Bethany Hamilton was right in Soul Surfer, quoting Philippians 4:13 numerous times.  With Christ I can do something, exactly what my next career is, only God knows.

I’ll let Bernie Taupin close this one out with his song sung by Elton John, “I’m Still Standing.”

You could never know what it’s like
Your blood like winter freezes just like ice
And there’s a cold lonely light that shines from you
You’ll wind up like the wreck you hide behind that mask you use
And did you think this fool could never win
Well look at me, I’m coming back again
I got a taste of love in a simple way
And if you need to know while I’m still standing you just fade away
Don’t you know I’m still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I’m still standing after all this time
