Janet Jackson – What Have You Done For Me Lately (Official Music Video)

Inspirational Behind What Have You Done For Me Lately:

Janet Jackson thought about being taken for granted when What Have You Done for Me Lately was conceived. Little did Janet realize that this 1986 song would cross over into other areas of life like sports fans becoming frustrated by their local teams failing to achieve greatness. Janet wanted to make sure that other people would receive recognition for their contributions in life.

Biblical Application:

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says, James 1:19-22.

Exegesis of What Have You Done For Me Lately:

What’s up girl?
He stood me up again
Again?
Mmhmm
Well what’s up with this guy?
Do you really like him that much?
Yes honey, I love him, he is fine
He does a lot of nice things for me
I know he used to do nice stuff for you
But what has he done for you lately?

In the music video, a friend doesn’t want her girl friend to get hurt by the man she is currently dating.

Used to be a time when you would pamper me
Used to brag about it all the time
Your friends seem to think that you’re so peachy keen
But my friends say neglect is on your mind
Who’s right?

Janet is questioning the change in behavior of a former boyfriend. She wants to know what’s going on.

What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah
What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah

This type of love is self-seeking, wanting to see action before putting any effort into this relationship.

Used to go to dinner almost every night
Dancin’ ’til I thought I’d lose my breath
Ahh

Now it seems your dancing feet are always on my couch
Good thing I cook or else we’d starve to death
Ain’t that a shame?

Apathy and laziness have set in. Any acts of love or passion have faded.

What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah
What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah

This mentality is ruining their relationship.

I never ask for more than I deserve
You know it’s the truth
You seem to think you’re God’s gift to this earth
I’m tellin’ you, no way

At some point in a relationship, usually when the feeling of love starts to fade, you become your true self. When you stop performing or seek to get to know someone more, relationships become stale.

You ought to be thankful for the little things,
But little things are all you seem to give
You’re always putting off what we coul do today
Soap opera says, you’ve got one life to live
Who’s right, who’s wrong?

Disagreements occur when certain expectations aren’t met. This leads to the blame game, who is right and who is wrong.

What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah
What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah
What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah
What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah

Actions speak louder than words.

Get with it

What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah (yeah ha)
What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah (yeah)
What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah (yeah)

This reminds me of a what’s in it for me attitude.

What have you done for me lately? (lately)
Ooh ooh ooh yeah
What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah
What have you done for me lately? (This is wild, I swear)

Time will tell if a relationship is worth saving.

Final Thoughts:

What have you done for me lately has become a cultural motto for many Americans. If you are putting in all the effort and worth and no one else is trying, it’s hard to stay motivated. Subsequently, the best thing you can do is let your actions speak for yourself. When you find yourself being taken for granted, you may want to search for an occupation, place or relationship where you are appreciated, noticed and thanked.

Deana Carter – Strawberry Wine (Official Music Video)

Inspiration Behind Strawberry Wine:

The lyrics of Strawberry Wine reflect upon Matraca Berg’s childhood experience growing up on a farm in Wisconsin. Matraca and her aunts would sneak away each summer to drink strawberry wine. Deanna Carter then takes these memories using a metaphor to compare Strawberry Wine to their first relationship, falling in love. The lyrics of Strawberry Wine highlight a youthful innocence, the pursuit of love and nostalgia.

Biblical Application:

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Ephesians 5:18-20.

Exegesis of Strawberry Wine:

He was workin’ through college
On my grandpa’s farm
I was thirstin’ for knowledge
And he had a car

Summertime was my favorite time of the year growing up. While out of school for three months, there is a sense of freedom which Deanna points to in this opening stanza.

Yeah, I was caught somewhere
Between a woman and a child
One restless summer
We found love growin’ wild
On the banks of the river
On a well beaten path
It’s funny how those memories they last

There is a mix between exploring the farm as the crops flourish and memories of her first love.

Like strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love
Whoa, bittersweet
Green on the vine
Like strawberry wine

This chorus provides a metaphor between tasting alcohol and love for the first time as a teenager.

And I still remember
When thirty was old
My biggest fear was September
When he had to go

The end of the summer was always tough to come to grasp with as the day after Labor Day is when students were forced to go back to school every fall.

A few cards and letters
And one long distance call
We drifted away
Like the leaves in the fall
But year after year
I come back to this place
Just to remember the taste

Despite whatever promises were made before the summer ended, this couple slowly drifted apart. Visiting this farm brought back a flood of memories.

Of strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love
Whoa, bittersweet
Green on the vine
Like strawberry wine

Childhood is a time of exploration. Sometimes when you are left alone, temptation leads to poor decisions.

The fields have grown over now
Years since they’ve seen a plow
There’s nothin’ time hasn’t touched
Is it really him
Or the loss of my innocence?
I’ve been missin’ so much
Yeah

The lack of farming suggests that the grandparents have passed away. With this property left in the family, visiting isn’t the same, but the memories still come back.

Strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love
Whoa, bittersweet
And green on the vine

Your first taste of alcohol and first kiss stick with you.

Like strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love
Oh, bittersweet
Green on the vine
Like strawberry wine

The repetition of the chorus suggests this song went a little longer than necessary,

Strawberry wine
(Oh, oh)
Strawberry wine

Flavored alcohol tends to be one of the first drinks teenagers try.

Final Thoughts:

As someone with a photographic memory, places I visit, and songs usually flood my mind with memories. I grew up in Delaware with some special friends like Jeanette and Stephen, spending many summer nights together. While we would push the envelope from time to time, doing things we knew that were wrong, we were kids learning from trial and error. This is part of growing up or as Michael W. Smith once sang about, Living and Learning.

Gabby Barrett – I Hope (Lyrics)

Inspiration Behind I Hope:

Gabby Barret had a vision to create a song where genuine emotions are expressed. With the help of co-writers Zach Kale and Jon Nite as well as producer Ross Copperman, I Hope became a reality. The inspiration behind the lyrics stems from Gabby’s personal experiences in high school. Being cheated on for the first time left the bitter pill of betrayal inside of Gabby. This painful experience enabled Gabby to mature, wanting to highlight the positive in life with the title, I Hope. Yet the root of bitterness inside of Gabby’s heart provides an unexpected twist at the end, using hope in a negative context.

Biblical Application:

We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”[a] For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope, Romans 15:1-4.

Exegesis of I Hope:

Yeah, yeah
Ooh, oh
Oh, oh
Yeah

The opening melody is like taking a deep breath before an important speech.

I, I hope she makes you smile
The way you made me smile
On the other end of a phone
In the middle of a highway, driving alone

Gabby focuses on an ex-boyfriend, wanting his new girlfriend to feel like she did.

Oh, baby, I, I hope you hear a song
That makes you sing along
And gets you thinking ’bout her
Then the last several miles turns into a blur, yeah

Gabby sings about how music keeps you awake while driving. The longer you drive, there is a tendency to start losing your thoughts as being tired begins to blur everything together.

I hope you both feel the sparks by the end of the drive
I hope you know she’s the one by the end of the night
I hope you never ever felt more free
Tell your friends that you’re so happy
I hope she comes along and wrecks every one of your plans
I hope you spend your last dime to put a rock on her hand
I hope she’s wilder than your wildest dreams
She’s everything you’re ever gonna need

Gabby remains positive, hoping the best for her ex-boyfriend. She hopes that he isn’t afraid of commitment and is willing to become engaged and married.

And then I hope she cheats
Like you did on me
And then I hope she cheats
Like you did on me

This is where the root of bitterness inside of Gabby rears its ugly head.

Yeah, babe, I hope he shows up in a 2:00 a.m. pic from a friend
Hanging on to a girl to just rub it in
I hope you stay up all night, all alone, waiting by the phone
And then he calls

Gabby now turns her attention to her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend, wishing she endures the same pain he brought her.

And baby, I (I), I hope you work it out
Forgive and just about forget
Let him take you on a first date again
And when you lean in for a kiss

Gabby is now back for a positive spin, hoping for reconciliation.

I hope you both feel the sparks by the end of the drive
I hope you know he’s the one by the end of the night
I hope you never ever felt more free
Tell your friends that you’re so happy
I hope he comes along and wrecks every one of your plans
I hope he spends his last dime to put a rock on your hand
I hope he’s wilder than your wildest dreams
He’s everything you’re ever gonna need

this chorus serves as a hopeful prayer, wanting the best for these two.

And then I hope he cheats
Like you did on me
And then I hope he cheats
Like you did on me

Another twist, hoping for the worse, possibly fueled by resentment.

I hope what goes, comes all the way around
I hope she makes you feel the same way
About her that I feel about you right now

Another negative stanza, wishing for karma or as the Bible states, “you reap what you sow.”

I hope you both feel the sparks by the end of the drive
I hope you know she’s the one by the end of the night
I hope you never ever felt more free
Tell your friends that you’re so happy (oh-woah, oh, woah, woah)
I hope she comes along and wrecks every one of your plans
I hope you spend your last dime to put a rock on her hand
I hope she’s wilder than your wildest dreams
She’s everything you’re ever gonna need

Gabby is having a series of emotional sways, going back and forth between wishing the best, then the worst.

And then I hope she cheats
Like you did on me
And then I hope she cheats
Like you did on me

Perhaps Jon and Zach swayed Gabby to add this twist of fate halfway through, I Hope.

Like you did on me

One last zinger, wanting her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend to want to feel the same pain that Gabby endured.

Final Thoughts:

For as long as I can remember, I try to surround myself with positive people. While Gabby is pouring out her heart as she sings, I Hope, the negative spin on hope kills the good vibes of the opening of this song. As my former pastor often taught, “hurt people hurt other people.” When you allow the root of bitterness to poison your heart, you turn hope into hate.

Lainey Wilson – Heart Like A Truck (Official Music Video)

Inspiration Behind Heart Like a Truck:

Lainey Wilson grew up around strong confident women in Louisiana. Subsequently, when Lainey endured difficult and painful relationships, she had a support group to lean on. The advice passed down from these mentors influenced the lyrics to Heart Like a Truck. Despite being treated like dirt on occasion, Lainey fought through these moments to press on like a reliable truck.

Biblical Application:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight, Proverbs 3:5-6.

Exegesis of Heart Like a Truck:

I never stay in one place too long
A dirt road’s singing me a siren song
I gotta find a field
I need to spin my wheels
I got a hankering for four wide tires
And I can’t help it, it’s the way I’m wired
‘Fore you get too close
Boy, you need to know

Lainey appears to enjoy being outside, horses and traveling. This is how Lainey is wired, afraid of getting hurt by men.

I got a heart like a truck
It’s been drug through the mud
Runs on dreams and gasoline
And that ole highway holds the key

Driving in a truck is a safe space for Lainey. As she drives in her truck, her mind begins to dream about different aspirations in life.

It’s got a lead foot down when it’s leaving
Lord knows it’s taken a hell of a beating
A little bit of love is all that it’s needing
But it’s good as it is tough
I got a heart like a truck

Lainey likes to drive fast, putting her truck through rigorous conditions. Yet by appreciating and raking care of her truck, it does what she needs it to do. This similar perseverance has grown in Lainey’s heart.

There ain’t no breaking when I throw it in drive
Don’t always keep it in between the lines
If you’re ready for a ride, pedal down state of mind
Boy, I tell you what
You better buckle up

Lainey enjoys living on the edge. She’s not your typical girl, warning any guy that enters her life to buckle up.

I got a heart like a truck
It’s been drug through the mud
Runs on dreams and gasoline
And that ole highway holds the key

Trials in life toughened up Lainey. She’s not afraid of what lies ahead in life, eager to find out what’s next.

It’s got a lead foot down when it’s leaving
Lord knows it’s taken a hell of a beating
A little bit of love is all that it’s needing
But it’s good as it is tough
I got a heart like a truck

Sometimes human beings take out their frustrations on their vehicles, blowing off steam. This is how Lainey likes to roll, fast and on the edge of losing control.

Go out and see if you can knock off the dust, yeah
Shine it up, rev it up and let it run, yeah
It gets a high riding off into the sun, yeah

Ride your truck hard, clean it afterwards and ride it again.

I got a heart like a truck
It’s been drug through the mud
Runs on dreams and gasoline
And that ole highway holds the key

Lainey has become a strong tough woman thanks to her female mentors.

It’s got a lead foot down when it’s leaving
Lord knows it’s taken a hell of a beating
A little bit of love is all that it’s needing
But it’s good as it is tough
I got a heart like a truck

Lainey likes to have a good time driving her truck on and off the road.

Go on and see if you can knock off the dust, yeah
Shine it up, rev it up and let it run, yeah
It gets a high riding off into the sun, yeah
It gets a high riding off into the sun

Keep on driving hard, take care of your vehicle and seize the moments that you have driving in the sun.

Final Thoughts:

I’ve driven over a million miles in my life, taking 2 vehicles close to 200,000 miles. However, when you live in the mountains, you have to watch out for fog, rain and high winds. While I don’t mind having an hour commute to work, I’d rather slow down, take a scenic drive and see what I discover around the next bend. As for human hearts, the more you endure at a younger age, the better prepared you will be when unexpected storms come crashing upon your shores. Trials lead to opportunities for growth, maturity and mental toughness like the song heart like a truck.

The Message Behind the Music-March 16

Inspiration Behind Fancy:

Bobby Gentry was the original writer of the country song Fancy. However, when Reba McEntire performed her version of this song, Fancy became a household name. The lyrics tell the story of a poor mother’s last act of generosity to give her daughter Fancy a chance for success in the future. Fancy’s theme points to sacrifices made so made by parents so that their children might be able to realize the American dream.

Biblical Application:

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver, 2 Corinthians 9:6-7.

Exegesis of Fancy:

Well, I remember it all very well looking back
It was the summer I turned 18
We lived in a one-room, rundown shack on the outskirts of New Orleans
We didn’t have money for food or rent
To say the least, we were hard-pressed
Then mama spent every last penny we had to buy me a dancing dress

A teenager girl remembers a special moment from her childhood. Fancy’s mom wanted her prom night to be special, saving everything she had to buy a dress.

Well, Mama washed and combed and curled my hair
Then she painted my eyes and lips (lips)
Then I stepped into a satin dancing dress
That had a split on the side clean up to my hip
It was red velvet trim and it had fit me good
Well, standing back from the looking glass
There stood a woman where a half-grown kid had stood

Fancy’s mom did everything in her power to make this evening the best night of her life.

She said, “Here’s your one chance, Fancy, don’t let me down”
She said, “Here’s your one chance, Fancy, don’t let me down”

Fancy;s mother wanted her girl to make her proud.

Mama dabbed a little bit of perfume on my neck
Then she kissed my cheek
And then I saw the tears welling up in her troubled eyes
As she started to speak
She looked at our pitiful shack
And then she looked at me and took a ragged breath
She said, “Your Pa’s runned off, and I’m real sick
And the baby’s gonna starve to death”

Fancy’s dad took off, her mom is about to die and her younger sibling doesn’t have enough income to eat.

She handed me a heart-shaped locket that said
“To thine own self be true”
And I shivered as I watched a roach crawl across
The toe of my high-heeled shoe
It sounded like somebody else that was talking
Asking Mama, “What do I do?”
She said, “Just be nice to the gentlemen, Fancy they’ll be nice to you”

Fancy’s mother provides advice for her date.

She said, “Here’s your one chance, Fancy, don’t let me down
Here’s your one chance, Fancy, don’t let me down
Lord, forgive me for what I do
But if you want out, well, it’s up to you
Now don’t let me down now
Your Mama’s gonna move you uptown”

This mom’s dying wish is to make her mama proud, to find a man who will provide her Fancy better than her husband.

Well, that was the last time I saw my Ma
The night I left that rickety shack
The welfare people came and took the baby
Mama died and I ain’t been back
But the wheels of fate had started to turn
And for me, there was no way out
It wasn’t very long until I knew exactly
What my Mama’d been talking about

Through this tragic event, Fancy began to realize what her mom was trying to say.

I knew what I had to do, and I made myself this solemn vow
That I was gonna be a lady someday
Though I didn’t know when or how
But I couldn’t see spending the rest of my life
With my head hung down in shame
You know, I might’ve been born just plain white trash
But Fancy was my name

Instead of feeling sorry for herself, Fancy decided to make something out of her life.

She said, “Here’s your one chance, Fancy, don’t let me down”
She said, “Here’s your one chance, Fancy, don’t let me down”

The memory of Mom’s word motivated Fancy to be successful in life.

It wasn’t long after a benevolent man took me in off the streets
And one week later, I was pouring his tea
In a five-room hotel suite (yes, she was)
I charmed a king, congressman and an occasional aristocrat
Then I got me a Georgia mansion
And an elegant New York townhouse flat
And I ain’t done bad (she ain’t done bad)

This positive mindset led to good fortune. Fancy’s drive to make her mother proud paid off.

Now in this world
There’s a lot of self-righteous hypocrites that call me bad (bad)
They criticize Mama for turning me out, no matter how little we had
But though I ain’t had to worry about nothing for nigh on 15 years
Well, I can still hear the desperation
In my poor Mama’s voice ringing in my ears

Despite reaching new heights, the elite don’t like Fancy’s elevated status. This doesn’t bother Fancy, holding true to what her mother taught her.

“Here’s your one chance, Fancy, don’t let me down
Oh, here’s your one chance, Fancy, don’t let me down
Lord, forgive me for what I do
But if you want out, well, it’s up to you
Now don’t let me down, hon’
Your Mama’s gonna move you uptown”
Oh, and I guess she did

When one or more parents believe in their children. girls like Fancy often end up living prosperous and successful lives. The support from mothers instill belief and confidence in their children.

Final Thoughts:

My father was an immigrant to America after World War II. Subsequently, my parents lived paycheck to paycheck when I was a child. My parents did the best that they could until my father relocated to Delaware. While my parents weren’t perfect, they did everything in their power to ensure that my 2 older sisters and I had a foundation for success in the future. Happiness isn’t about money. Happiness comes from doing and working in positions that you were designed by God to do.

The Message Behind the Music-March 14

Inspiration Behind I Hope You Dance:

I Hope You Dance was conceived from a moving experience between Tia Siller and her sick mother. Tia’s mother provided an inspirational message before departing, ” I hope you dance.” Tia’s mom wanted her to take a chance, by living life to its fullest. Upon completing this song, Lee Ann Womack debuted I Hope You Dance on an episode of Extreme Hope Makeover Edition after a needy family was given a new home to live in.

Biblical Application:

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full, John 10:9-10.

Exegesis pf I Hope You Dance:

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty-handed

The opening stanza is a call for Carpe Diem, seize the day. Maintain your passion for life, never take anything for granted and take time to love others.

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

Enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. Stay optimistic when dreams and goals don’t happen right away. Give faith a fighting chance so you’ll be ready to dance when the opportunity arises.

I hope you dance (dance)
I hope you dance (dance)

Celebrate life.

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin’ might mean takin’ chances, but they’re worth takin’
Lovin’ might be a mistake, but it’s worth makin’

Don’t allow fear to narrow your options in life. Take the path less traveled, don’t be afraid to fail and pursue love even when it hurts.

Don’t let some hell bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to sellin’ out, reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

Flee the root of bitterness. Never give up and slow down to reflect upon the beauty all around you.

I hope you dance (time is a wheel in constant motion)
I hope you dance (always rolling us along)
I hope you dance (tell me who wants to look back on their years)
I hope you dance (and wonder where those years have gone)

Make the most of the opportunities that you have in life. Stay present and live for the here and npw.

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

Enjoy the wonders of this world. Stay grounded and be ready when new doors open.

Dance, I hope you dance (dance)
I hope you dance (time is a wheel in constant motion)
I hope you dance (always rolling us along)
I hope you dance (tell me who wants to look back on their years)
I hope you dance (and wonder where those years have gone)

Keep your head up, stay alert and seize the opportunities that God provides in life.

Tell me who wants to look back on their years (dance)
And wonder where those years have gone (dance)

Live your life without regrets.

Final Thoughts:

This song brought tears to my eyes when I first heard it on ABC as part of the Extreme Home Makeover Edition. Between the daily news cycle and social media, this world has become consumed with dwelling on what’s wrong, who is to blame and why we should hate them. I Hope You Dance serves as a welcomed change, calling listeners to make the most of their life. Instead of playing the victim card, stop living in the past so that you can start living the abundant life that God has designed for you.

The Message Behind the Music-March 12

Inspiration Behind the House That Built Me:

The House That Built Me was conceived from personal experiences by Miranda Lambert and Allen Shamblin. This song was co-written by Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin. These childhood memories combined with Lambert’s emotional response to the completed lyrics led Miranda to record this song for herself.

Biblical Application:

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair;for giving prudence to those who are simple,[a] knowledge and discretion to the young—let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.[b] The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools[c] despise wisdom and instruction, Proverbs 1:1-7.

Exegesis of the House That Built Me:

I know they say you can’t go home again
I just had to come back one last time
Ma’am, I know you don’t know me from Adam
But these hand prints on the front steps are mine

Adults sometimes want to revisit their childhood by going back to where they grew up. Miranda wanted to walk through the house she grew up in one last time.

Up those stairs in that little back bedroom
Is where I did my homework and I learned to play guitar
And I bet you didn’t know under that live oak
My favourite dog is buried in the yard

With each step, memories flowed from her mind. Especially the tree where her favorite dog was buried.

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here, it’s like I’m someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself

These memories weren’t all positive. This home was associated with pain and suffering. Miranda thought that returning one more time would bring healing.

If I could just come in, I swear I’ll leave
Won’t take nothin’ but a memory
From the house that built me

The time spent living in this house helped shape who Miranda has become as an adult.

Momma cut out pictures of houses for years
From better homes and garden magazine
Plans were drawn and concrete poured
Nail by nail and board by board
Daddy gave life to momma’s dream

Although her parents didn’t have much, they did the best that they could.

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here, it’s like I’m someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself

Going back in time doesn’t always help. Brokenness takes time to heal, often longer than you expect.

If I could just come in, I swear I’ll leave
Won’t take nothin’ but a memory
From the house that built me

Miranda begs the current owners for one last chance to walk back in time.

You leave home, you move on
And you do the best you can
I got lost in this whole world
And forgot who I am

Miranda got so caught up in her busy schedule that she lost her way, forgetting who she was.

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here, it’s like I’m someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself

This visit didn’t produce the outcome that Miranda was hoping for.

If I could walk around, I swear I’ll leave
Won’t take nothin’ but a memory
From the house that built me

If these walls could speak, they would share the life lessons Miranda learned while growing up in this house.

Final Thoughts:

As an adult, I still have a photographic memory, able to recall fond memories. Growing up in New Jersey, I can remember my first homerun in baseball and being laughed out for not being able to read out loud in first grade due to severe stuttering. These are past events that helped shape me as an adult. The tougher the pain, the greater the opportunity for personal growth. These are the events that build and shape human beings.

Inspiration Behind Hold On:

Hold On by Wilson Phillips provides an inside scoop of what was going on behind the scenes of her band. Lead singer Chyanna was battling substance abuse and a difficult relationship. The lyrics of Hold On serves as words of encouragement to hang in there until this tumultuous stage of life ends. The theme of Hold On urges listeners in a similar situation to make a change to avoid falling into a cycle of pain.

Biblical Application:

Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil, 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21.

Exegesis of Hold On:

I know there’s pain (I know there’s pain)
Why do you lock yourself up in these chains? (These chains)
No one can change your life except for you
Don’t ever let anyone step all over you

Pain is a natural aspect of life. Yet how you respond to pain will dictate how quickly you recover. You need to take responsibility for your life and stop playing the victim. If you want to change, stop letting others walk all over you.

Just open your heart and your mind
Mmm
Is it really fair to feel, this way inside?
Whoa-oh-oh

If the human heart is your well spring to life, guard your heart as you open your mind to a new future free from pain. Don’t let the past drag you down.

Someday, somebody’s gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then, baby, are you going to let ’em
Hold you down and make you cry?
Don’t you know?
Don’t you know, things can change?
Things will go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Can you hold on for one more day?
Things will go your way
Hold on for one more day

Change is possible, but your need to develop perseverance to press on. While you are waiting for circumstances in your life to change, hold on for dear life until things start to go your way again.

You could sustain
(Hmm) or are you comfortable with the pain?
You’ve got no one to blame for your unhappiness (no, baby)
You got yourself into your own mess (ooh)

Don’t let pain consume your life. You’ve got to be proactive in breaking free from your current situation. Don’t let these negative patterns continue.

Lettin’ your worries pass you by (lettin’ your worries), baby, (pass you by)
Don’t you think it’s worth your time
To change your mind?
No, no

Doubt and depression are holding Chyanna back. Once her mind believes that change is possible, healing can begin.

Someday, somebody’s gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then, baby, are you going to let ’em
Hold you down and make you cry?
Don’t you know?
Don’t you know, things can change?
Things will go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Can you hold on for one more day?
Things will go your way (all things will go your way)
Hold on for one more day

Breaking free from self-destructive patterns can be extremely difficult. Yet until you truly want to change how you are living, you’ll continue down this painful road. Some people just need a spark of hope or a positive influence to usher in a season of change.

I know that there is pain
But you hold on for one more day
And you break free from the chains
Yeah, I know that there is pain
But you hold on for one more day and you
Break free, break from the chains

I know you are hurting, but you have to hang in there. Press on.

Someday, somebody’s gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye (say goodbye)
Until then, baby, are you going to let ’em
Hold you down and make you cry?
Don’t you know?
Don’t you know (know), things can change? (No?)
Things will go your way
If you hold on for one more day, yeah
If you hold on
Don’t you know, things can change
Things will go your way
If you hold on for one more day

Wilson is encouraging Chyanna that she will see light at the end of the tunnel. Yet, for now, hang in there just one more day.

Can you hold on?
Can you hold on?
Mmm, can you hold on, baby
Won’t you tell me now
Hold on for one more day
‘Cause it’s gonna go your way
Don’t you know, things can change
Things will go your way
If you hold on for one more day, yeah
Can’t you change it this time
Make up your mind
Hold on
Hold on

This final chorus is like a prayer for a good friend. A glimpse of hope is better than the reality of pain and suffering.

Final Thoughts:

As a former youth pastor, teenagers can place themselves into difficult situations similar to Chyanna. All I could do was be an agent for change, providing words of hope. In the end, human beings have to want to change before hope has the opportunity to become a reality.

Inspiration Behind What About Love?

What About Love was conceived out of a longing for an emotional connection and desire for unreciprocated love. The lyrics were spawn from band members who felt unappreciated by their former partners. The concept of love has become merely a word in many relationships, void of genuine acts of romance. Subsequently, once in a relationship, these women band members wanted to know what happened to love, where did it go?

Biblical Application:

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other, Galatians 5:13-15.

Exegesis of What About Love:

I’ve been lonely, I’ve been waitin’ for you
I’m pretending and that’s all I can do
The love I’m sendin’
Ain’t makin’ it through to your heart

This woman doesn’t like being lonely. When she finds someone, she is trying to get his attention. Yet, despite her attempts at affection, he either doesn’t notice or have mutual feelings.

You’ve been hidin’, never lettin’ it show
Always tryin’ to keep it under control
You got it down and you’re well on your way to the top
But there’s somethin’ that you forgot

Some guys try to hide their feelings in an attempt to remain cool. Instead, the man she has her eye on is focused on their career, seeking to reach new heights. However, he is missing out on love.

What about love?
Don’t you want someone to care about you?
And what about love?
Don’t let it slip away

The chorus is an open-ended question. God designed human beings to leave their parents and start their own family. This is what this woman asks, “don’t you want to share your life with someone you love?

What about love?
I only want to share it with you
You might need it someday

This opens the door to an intimate encounter. You are the one who I want to share my life with.

I can’t tell you what you’re feelin’ inside
And I can’t sell you what you don’t want to buy
Something’s missing, you got to look back on your life
You know something here just ain’t right

She is trying to break through to uncover what he is feeling. She refuses to give up, urging this man to consider what he is missing.

What about love?
Don’t you want someone to care about you?
What about love?
Don’t let it slip away
What about love?
I only want to share it with you

This chorus makes a convincing argument about love and the need for this to be shared.

What about love?
Don’t you want someone to care about you?
What about love?
Don’t let it slip away

Let me know. I know you have feelings of love. What are you afraid of? Act now or love will slip away.

But what about love?
I only want to share it with you
Oh no
Ohh ohh, oh what about love?

This woman is fighting to express her love, eager to convince the person she cares about.

Yeah
Ooh ooh hoo
What about love?
Love, love, love
What about, what about love?
Ooh hoo hoo hoo

Love is a driving force, especially when you meet the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.

Final Thoughts:

One of the aspects not addressed in what about love is timing. Both individuals aren’t always ready for love. When the timing is off, love is not manifested. However, when the time is right, love between 2 people is conceived. This is the key element of love, where desire and timing co-exist.

Inspiration Behind Material Girl:

Madonna’s Material Girl was inspired by the rapid spread of materialism in the 1980’s. Although Madonna possessed an internal desire for luxury and wealth, she addresses the superficial nature of people giving expensive gifts for something in return. After graduating from high school in Rochester, Michigan, Madonna moved to New York City to follow her dreams. The success of Material Girl propelled Madonna to become a legendary female singer.

Biblical Application:

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you,” Hebrews 13:4-5.

Exegesis of Material Girl:

Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me
I think they’re okay
If they don’t give me proper credit
I just walk away

Madonna doesn’t mind attention from the opposite sex. However, when she doesn’t receive a certain level of respect, she simply walks away.

They can beg and they can plead
But they can’t see the light, that’s right, that’s right
‘Cause the boy with the cold hard cash
Is always Mister Right

Madonna isn’t bothered by flattery or gifts. Yet someone with financial stability in his bank account is what Madonna is searching for.

‘Cause we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Living in New York City as an aspiring singer wasn’t easy for Madonna. Subsequently, she became a material girl living in a world full of materialism.

Some boys romance, some boys slow dance
That’s alright with me
If they can’t raise my interest then I
Have to let them be

Madonna enjoys dancing and romance. However, the guy she is looking for must be impressive or else she’ll lose interest quickly.

Some boys try and some boys lie but
I don’t let them play, no way, no way
Only boys that save their pennies
Make my rainy day

Madonna doesn’t have any patience for liars and players. She is looking for prudent and shrewd individuals who possess a vision for the future.

‘Cause they are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Madonna had an intuition that material possessions would continue to climb in value, making this lifestyle hard to sustain.

Living in a material world
(Material)
Living in a material world
Living in a material world
(Material)
Living in a material world

This chorus drives home the foresight of being financially responsible.

Boys may come and boys may go
And that’s alright you see
Experience has made me rich
And now they’re after me

Life experiences have made Madonna popular and wealthy.

‘Cause everybody’s living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

This journey as a material girl elevated Madonna into the category of rich and famous.

Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Perhaps this repetitive chorus is meant to reinforce Madonna rise in pop culture.

A material, a material
A material, a material world

Once you reach this status of a material girl, the world expects you to stay here.

Living in a material world
(Material)
Living in a material world
Living in a material world
(Material)
Living in a material world

This became Madonna’s mindset.

Living in a material world
(Material)
Living in a material world
Living in a material world
(Material)
Living in a material world

Fame and fortune changed Madonna.

Final Thoughts:

As I entered high school, Madonna was seeking to become to next great female singer. Along the way to the top, Madonna continued to push the envelope in her lyrics and music videos. By the time I graduated from college, Madonna had gone off the deep end, losing touch with the Catholic girl growing up in Michigan. God gives human beings free will to do and live as they choose. Maybe, God willing, this prodigal daughter will come to her senses at some time before her singing career ends. As for now, Madonna has become the material girl from this song.
