The Message Behind the Music-October 28

Paramore: crushcrushcrush [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

Inspiration Behind Crush Crush Crush:

This song was inspired by the raw, chaotic emotions of teenage infatuation. Lead singer Hayley Williams drew from her own experiences growing up to address a mix of thrill, insecurity, and obsession. The lyrics capture the awkwardness, excitement, and vulnerability of a young crush. As young hearts race, you feel both electric and fragile emotions.

Biblical Application:

A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel, Proverbs 15:18.

Exegesis of Crush Crush Crush:

II’ve got a lot to say to you
Yeah, I’ve got a lot to say
I noticed your eyes are always glued to me
Keeping them here
And it makes no sense at all

Hayley notices that another boy has a crush on her. This attraction doesn’t make sense.

They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies

Gossip started this distortion of the truth.

They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies

Repeated as if to express her frustrations.

Crush, crush, crush
Crush, crush
(Two, three, four)

The issue of dealing with crushes.

Nothing compares to
A quiet evening alone
Just the one, two
I was just counting on

The silence of being alone can be refreshing.

That never happens
I guess I’m dreaming again
Let’s be more than this

However, this rarely occurs, more than a dream.

If you want to play it like a game
Well, come on, come on, let’s play
‘Cause I’d rather waste my life pretending
Than have to forget you for one whole minute

The raw emotions of dealing with a crush and flirting with the one you like.

They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies

Your crush was revealed to the person you like.

They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies

Girls frustrated by gossip.

Crush, crush, crush
Crush, crush
(Two, three, four)

How crushes can be draining.

Nothing compares to
A quiet evening alone
Just the one, two
I was just counting on

Wanting to be alone with the person that you like.

That never happens
I guess I’m dreaming again
Let’s be more than this now

Disappointment from not having this crush lead to anything.

Rock and roll, baby
Don’t you know
That we’re all alone now?
I need something to sing about

Trying to find something positive in life.

Rock and roll, hey
Don’t you know, baby
We’re all alone now?
I need something to sing about

Wanting a relationship to work but it nerver materialized.

Rock and roll, hey
Don’t you know, baby
We’re all alone now?
Give me something to sing about

Third straight stanza is repeated as if to express disappointment.

Nothing compares to
A quiet evening alone
Just the one, two
I was just counting on

Wanting something to happen so bad.

That never happens
I guess I’m dreaming again
Let’s be more than
No ohh

A glimpse of reality.

Nothing compares to
A quiet evening alone
Just the one, two
I was just counting on

Still wanting to dream.

That never happens
I guess I’m dreaming again
Let’s be more than
More than this

Trying to press on.

Final Thoughts:

I had a crush on a good friend from high school who was in a serious relationship for most of high school. When her relationship ended, I started dating a new girl in college. The crush we had on each other never materialized due to timing. These are likely some of the experiences that inspired Hayley to craft Crush Crush Crush.
