Inspiration Behind American Woman:

The original version of American Woman was written by the Guess. Since the band members were against the Vietnam War, the American Woman was seen as a distraction. Lead singer Burton Cummings initially composed the lyrics to be a metaphor for Canadian woman. Yet the lyrics sought to present an anti-war message indirectly while maintaining a positive tone. Lenny Kravitz’s version used Austin’s Powers the Spy that Shagged Me to spice up this album cover.

Biblical Application:

“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell, Matthew 5:21-22.

The lyrics appear to have multiple meanings. Does the Guess see American woman as a distraction? Or is Burton’s mother trying to find him a wife, wanting grandchildren.

This stanza suggests that woman are seen as an obstacle to freedom and independence.

A blunt way of saying I’m not interested.

An anti-war stanza. Women are described as distractions and nuisances. Meanwhile Vietnam veterans didn’t need to be lectured by people who didn’t understand this war.

A call to be free from distractions.

Either a goodbye, going off to war or a call for freedom, to become single again. Fleeing any form of commitment.

Final Thoughts:

Before my senior year, I broke up with my high school sweetheart. At this time, I cared more about winning a state championship in cross country rather than being in a relationship. Girls distracted me as a sophomore and junior so I made thus rash decision. Perhaps, this was part of the mentality that went into the lyrics of American Woman.

Brooks & Dunn – Only In America (Official Video)

Inspiration Behind Only in America:

Brooks and Dunn share a deep appreciation for America as well as it’s blend of cultures. Don Cook and Ronnie Rodgers collaborated with Brooks and Dunn on Only in America. The patriotic lyrics fit well into their 2001 album Steers and Stripes. After the events of September 11th, Only in America became a unifying message for a mourning nation in need of a hope and positivity.

Biblical Application:

The mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory, Colossians 1:26-27.

Exegesis of Only in America:

School bus driver in a traffic jam

Another day begins in a big city when a New York bus driver glances in her mirror to check out what is going on behind her. What she sees is future leaders of America filled with aspirations, dreams and goals. This driver thinks about the paths that each might take.

These dreams could come true in America. Everyone has a chance to pursue their ideal life.

And talk about the stars they could have been

On the other side of the coast, there is a newly married couple. Sons and daughters begin to carve their own path in life. All they want is a chance for success, as soon as possible, risking failure to chase after their dreams. Instead of wondering what might have been, they gave it a shot.

Final Thoughts:

As the son of an immigrant, I have seen great things happen. I went from living paycheck to paycheck to fulfilling some of my dreams in life. While life is full of challenges, you have to be willing to take chances by risking failure to see if you have what it takes to succeed. When failure does occur, you can always reinvent yourself by changing direction. As you evolve, you may not like what you are doing but you can always change course if necessary. Since you only live once, keep chasing after your dreams.

Inspiration Behind Last Dance:

Last Dance was conceived from a specific creative brief for the film Thank God It’s Friday. This scene was from a fictional disco club in Los Angeles. Last Dance functions as a literal closing moment, like a bar having their last call for buying a drink before closing. The lyrics contain a sense of urgency, to seize this final dance on the night club floor.

Biblical Application:

Now King David was told, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets, 2 Samuel 6:12-15.

I’ve never been a charming person. The fear of stuttering kept my requests to dance short and sweet. While I was rejected many times early in high school, I refused to give up. The better I became as a dancer, the easier it became to ask a girl to slow dance. Last Dance was also featured in a Castle episode, adding to fame and popularity.

Chubby Checker – The Twist (Official Music Video)

Inspiration Behind the Twist:

The Twist came from a real-life dance craze that had been circulating in African American communities since the early 20th century. The motions of the twist first appeared in dance moves known as the Mess Around and Ballin’ the Jack. However, when Dick Clark, host of American Bandstand, recognized the potential crossover of the Twist, Chubby Checker, formally Ernest Evans, took this song and dance to new heights.

Biblical Application:

You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, 12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever, Psalm 30:11-12.

Certain songs are designed to dance to, with versions of the Twist already in existence. Chubby Checker creates a song to celebrate the Twist which became a cultural movement. When song introduces a dance move, it increases its likelihood of remaining relevant. Nearly 70 years after the Twist was released, it still remains a popular dance move.

The Isley Brothers – Shout, Pts. 1 & 2 (Official Audio)

Inspiration Behind Shout:

The Isley Brothers version of Shout was a spontaneous, audience‑driven moment during a live performance. This improv in 1959 has become part of most must play lists at dances, proms and weddings. The band was closing a soul revue at the Uptown Theater in Philadelphia when lead singer Ronald Isley noticed the audience was standing and cheering. Similar to a band playing one more unexpected song at a concert, Ronald added an extended version of Shout which is now the original version.

Due to the live audience, the lyrics don’t mean us much as a typical song. Rather, the Isley Brothers are focused on getting everyone on the dance floor excited. The words in italics are used to ignite the audience into a frenzy. This song is designed to set the tone on the dance floor and accomplishes this every time I’ve heard this at a club. Over 65 years later, Shout remains a great song to dance and listen to.

Inspiration Behind California Dreamin’:

John and Michelle Phillip endured the harsh winter of 1963, living in New York City at this time. As someone who lived in the snowbelt in Cleveland, Ohio, you can only take so much bitter cold and shoving snow. The Phillips were newlyweds, living in a cramped apartment with a group of folk singers. When you are stuck inside for an extended period of time, thoughts are warmer. nicer days conceived California Dreamin’.

Biblical Application:

Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.5 The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises.6 The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. Ecclesiastes 1:4-6.

This is the inspiration behind California dreaming, searching for warmth and a place full of life.

Final Thoughts:

I have lived and traveled to northern states. I witnessed snow on Memorial Day weekend. I experienced snow in July while visiting Montana. I even saw snow in the mountains of Maine in late August. You could be in the middle of summer and still experience winter. On the other hand, it may be so hot where you live today that you’re praying for an early fall. Since weather cnages constantly, all you can do is enjoy that great weather days that come your way.

Inspiration Behind Take It Easy:

The lyrics to Take It Easy is a blend from roadside Americana, friendships from Los Angeles, and personal experiences. Jackson Browne began writing Take It Easy in 1971, drawing on the restless traveling of a touring musician. With so much going on around you, sometimes getting on stage helps you slow down, forgetting about your problems until the concert is over. Browning’s neighbor and future Eagles bandmate Glenn Frey listened to Jackson’s original version and helped complete the unfinished verse.

Final Thoughts:

As someone who was an emotional wreck in my teenage years, I needed to hear this message to relax. I took things too seriously until college. Once I matured, I was able to relieve my anxieties, burdens and concerns. Now as an adult, Take It Easy is still a good message to live by. When your life is spiraling out of control, take it easy!

Inspiration Behind Jump:

Jump evolved out of a television news story, personal experiences and creative collaboration from members of Van Halen. Producer Ted Templeman gave David Lee Roth a tape to listen to while riding in the back of a convertible. After replaying this tune numerous times, David began to visualize the lyrics to Jump. Roth imagined an onlooker to someone considering jumping off a building who shouts, “jump, go ahead and jump.”

Biblical Application:

But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”[h] 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ, Romans 10:16-17.

Exegesis of Jump:

Staying positive when bad things happen. You may have it tough, but I’ve seen tougher times.

Final Thoughts:

There is not much substance to the lyrics of Jump. However, if you just focus on the chorus, there is a strong message. To me, jumping is like taking a leap of faith. You may take time to make a decision, but sooner or later you have to make a move forward. There are many things in life you can’t control. Subsequently, when push comes to shove, take a leap of faith and jump.

The Message Behind the Music-June 20

Carly Rae Jepsen – Call Me Maybe

Inspiration Behind Call Me Maybe:

Carly Rae Jepsen and Tavish Crowe had an idea inspired by a folksong. In this scenario, a girl immediately falls for a person that she just met. Unsure of exactly what to say, she hands him her phone number saying, “Call Me Maybe.” The lyrics use a young woman as a narrator. Experiencing love at first sight, she pulls an unladylike move, being forward enough to give this young man her phone number. The lyrics tug at the emotions going on inside this woman.

Biblical Application:

She sets about her work vigorously, her arms are strong for her tasks.18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy, Proverbs 31:17-20.

Exegesis of Call Me Maybe:

I threw a wish in the well
Don’t ask me, I’ll never tell
I looked to you as it fell
And now you’re in my way

This young girl was asking, hoping and wishing for a special boy to come into her life. After making this wish, this young man suddenly entered her life.

I’d trade my soul for a wish
Pennies and dimes for a kiss
I wasn’t looking for this
But now you’re in my way

Poetry mixes with desire to find this girl experiencing love at first sight.

Your stare was holdin’
Ripped jeans, skin was showin’
Hot night, wind was blowin’
Where you think you’re going, baby?

He got her attention quickly.

So call me, maybe?

As he is about to leave, something overwhelms her. She rushes out, hands him her phone number and what comes out of her mouth isn’t exactly what she planned, but she made her move.

It’s hard to look right

In other words, I really like you, give me a call.

And this is crazy

this repetitive chorus illustrates her sense of emotion and urgency.

There are others who like me, but my main interest is in you.

You took your time with the call

He didn’t call right away, but she is still falling head over heels for him. I need to know if you feel the same way.

He is the only one on her mind.

Final Thoughts:

I first heard this song while I was taking my daughter on a college visit. I controlled the radio on the way there and I let her control the music on our return trip back to Delaware. Some of my most fond memories with Lydia were during car rides, talking about life and the future. When Call Me Maybe came on the radio, she blasted it as we sung along together. Although I probably missed several of the lyrics, this is a fun song to play loud and sing together.

The Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling (Official Music Video)

Inspiration Behind I Gotta Feeling:

I Gotta Feeling was inspired by U2’s Beautiful Day. With this concept in mind, the chorus of I Gotta Feeling was influenced by Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire who gives off a certain flair and vibe. When you add ideas from David Guetta’s beat and concepts from Talking Heads, the foundation for I Gotta Feeling was set. This song is a true credit to what can happen when a collective group of ideas comes together to form a classic song.

Biblical Application:

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord, Ephesians 5:6-10.

This stanza reminds me of the old danceathons with Dick Clark. If it’s summertime, there is a call to go dancing every night this week, dance until you drop.

Final Thoughts:

Dancing became one of my favorite hobbies in college. I would drive up to route 1 in Pennsylvania to dance at a club named Pulsations. This 3-story club had the most room to dance in the Tri-state area. The more I went dancing, the better I got. I don’t ever recall having a bad time dancing at this club. It was a special place that reminds me of the song I Gotta Feeling.
