Not So Far Fetched As I Once Thought

One of the first jobs I applied to after losing my teaching position of 10 years was at a Christian College in Ohio.  Like submitting an application to attend a local university, several pages were involved, requiring hours of my concentration.  The last portion required a thesis statement based upon previous research on a biblical passage.  To save time I collected numerous power point slides from classes I had taught, rewrote a thesis from one of my honors courses and cross referenced my theory with scientific data.  Although I did not get this position, a rhema that I received  today from the Lord, makes me think my theory is not so far fetch as I once thought.

As I read Genesis 8:1 this morning, the Jet Stream popped into my mind.  The Jet Stream are upper level winds which are usually 5-7 miles above the earth’s surface.  These winds can blow as fast as 200 miles an hour, within a stream that is thousands of miles long and a few hundred miles wide.  This weather system flows west to east, but shifts north to south depending upon the season.  The Jet Stream exists in the tropopause, the boundary between the troposphere and stratosphere of the earth’s atmosphere.  Based upon my gut feelings, I believe God created the Jet Stream to help dry the earth after the flood.  Once the Open Canopy was eliminated by God, the Jet Stream was necessary to circulate precipitation throughout the earth.  In the process, this new element also likely formed the first ice age, freezing mountains of water in the polar regions.

According to Genesis 8:3-4, Noah’s Ark came to rest on Mount Ararat, modern day turkey on July 17th.  The amount of water was so massive that it took until October 1st until all the mountain ranges of the earth were uncovered.  If you have ever seen the earth from an airplane, several areas over the United States have what appear to be ripples, traces of an ancient and worldwide flood which could have formed the Grand Canyon and Great Lakes.  By February 27th of the following year, the earth was completely dry based upon the accounts passed on to Moses in Genesis 8:14.  While I can’t say for sure this information is true, its plausible.  Just as the Discovery, History and Weather Channels speculate about past disasters, I felt compelled to share these notions with you.  Some may think I’m bizarre, others that I’s crazy, but maybe, just maybe a few will think this is not so far fetched as you once thought.

Big Brother

Initial thoughts of this title may lead people to images of the CBS reality show created by John de Mol.  The political savvy will likely be drawn in a different direction, thinking of the nickname for the federal government in the United States.  However, for the sake of brevity, today’s blog will address the idea that God is like a big brother.

Bully’s exist in every shape and form.  Whether this individual is a class mate, co-worker, neighbor, stalker or world power, from time to time, everyone needs a helping hand.  Psalm 125:1-2 suggests the Lord serves as a mountain of protection.  When your back is against the wall, pinned down by the travails of life, you need a big brother to come to the rescue.

When I was a 6th grader, I was a minority, attending an inner city Elementary with 90 % of the students either African American or Hispanic.  Since I was only 4’11” certain days were a living hell.  On a rough day, one of several bully’s attempted to shove me into a locker, in the process of closing the door on me.  Seeing my dire situation, God intervened sending a living giant to my aid.

Andre, one of my basketball friends during recess, 6 feet tall and close to 200 pounds in stature, easily put this bully in his place.  Throwing this student around like a rag doll,  Andre continued this drubbing until the boy vowed to never touch me again.  While your prayers might not be answered as direct as this one, don’t forget that God is like big brother, waiting to defend his younger siblings.

God’s Open Door Policy

The term “Open Door Policy” was adopted in 1899 by the United States in circular notes dispatched by the Secretary State John Hay.  These letters were sent to Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Russia addressing the need for the protection of equal privileges among countries trading with China.  Today, open door policy’s refer to management who is willing to discuss, listen and talk with employees about their concerns, frustrations and problems.

While stereotypes about God include fire, brimstone and striking people down for sinning, Psalm 24 reveals a far different picture.  Psalm 24:7 suggests that people, not God are closing their doors.  If Israel would just open their gates to Jerusalem and keep their doors ajar, the King of Glory wishes to enter.  Two verses later, David repeats himself with the identical words, “Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in,” Psalm 24:9.

Jesus recounts a similar open door policy in Revelation 3:20.  According to John, who quotes Jesus, a door is separating people from seeing Jesus face to face.  Unlike a typical door, this door contains only one handle which is on our side.  Jesus is on the other side, patiently knocking, waiting for you and me to let Him in.  However, Jesus don’t does not force himself until our lives.  Freewill is the difference between an open or shut door.  Therefore, if you want to experience God’s open door policy today, Jesus is waiting for you to let him in so that your relationship may begin, Romans 10:9-10.

Y.M.C.A.

The Village People created a classic song in 1978, worthy of almost any celebration.  Short for Young Men’s Christian’s Association, Y.M.C.A. sold over 10 million copies and remains a favorite at discos, school dances and weddings.  One of the core values the Y.M.C.A. still holds today is to develop the body, mind and spirit.  This is achieved through activities, education and physical fitness at local facilities scattered across America.

The latin root of education is educatus which means to lead forth from within.  If the origin suggests education shapes an individual, then a nation’s future depends upon the quality of schooling it provides.  According to 2009 scores from the Programme for International Student Assessment, the United States education system continues to decline when compared with the other global leaders.  Out of 34 industrialized nations, the U.S. ranks 14th in Reading, 17th in Science and 25th in Math, falling to the middle of the pack.

While the National Education Association blames a lack of funding to explain these results, the truth of the matter is when the Bible and prayer were expelled from public education in the 1960’s, standards have plummeted every decade since.  The founders of the YMCA knew something that experts are overlooking today, the body and spirit must not be forgotten.  If schools were held to the same standards as Survival of the Fittest or like businesses which are forced to close when they continue to lose money, education would be back on a track toward success.

Unfortunately, too much government red tape, influences of labor unions and political correctness is crippling education is America.  Instead, the United States is following the playbook of past leaders like Che, Mao and Stalin, creating a generation of students programmed to believe everything they hear and read.  As a result, bodies have become heavier, minds lighter and spirits on the verge of death.  At moments in time like this, it is important to look to history for guidance or in this case reflect upon the words of a classic song.

Young man, Are you listening to me
I said, young man, what do you want to be
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams,
but you’ve got to know this one thing.

No man, does it all by himself
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf
And just go there, to the Y.M.C.A.
I’m sure they can help you today
(Lyrics from the 2nd stanza)

If you don’t have a local YMCA in your town, may you find help for your body, mind and spirit from a nearby  church.  The party is waiting for your arrival, Luke 15:7.
