There’s Always Somebody Watching

While teaching my first 7th grade Bible class, the curriculum spent a chapter investigating integrity. The definition provided in the textbook referred to integrity as doing what’s right when no one is looking. Although this mindset provides the foundation for a good work ethic, there is always someone noticing and watching how you live your life. This could be children, students or curious neighbors who have nothing better to do.

And the men of the place asked him about his wife, and he said, She is my sister; for he was afraid to say, She is my wife—[thinking], Lest the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah, because she is attractive and is beautiful to look upon. When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac caressing Rebekah his wife, Genesis 26:7-8.

If you work in a modern building and company, there’s always somebody watching the surveillance camera of what’s going on daily. Whenever there is an incident, security goes back to watch the context of what led up to this situation. Just like the plots in the film Enemy of the State and Live Free or Die Hard, Big Brother is now watching you as you drive through intersections and on tollways.

And Abimelech called Isaac and said, See here, she is certainly your wife! How did you [dare] say to me, She is my sister? And Isaac said to him, Because I thought, Lest I die on account of her. 10 And Abimelech said, What is this you have done to us? One of the men might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt and sin upon us. 11 Then Abimelech charged all his people, He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death, Genesis 26:9-11.

As for today’s featured passage, Isaac wasn’t truthful about his relationship with Rebekah. Whenever an attractive individual moves into your neighborhood, eyes are watching from inside their cars and homes. Isaac should have known better but had to learn the hard way when confronted by King Abimelech in the passage above. If Bette Midler came to the conclusion God is Watching Us, Christians should also know that God is all knowing and seeing.

Just Win Baby

While the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League stole most of the headlines in the 1970’s as America’s Team, another team only cared about one thing.  As owner of the Oakland Raiders, Al Davis adopted a simple strategy, “Just Win Baby!”  Instead of seeking approval and recognition like the Cowboys, Davis developed a win at all cost mentality.  Thus, as the Dallas Cowboys bandwagon grew in stature using their famous cheerleaders as eye candle, Oakland built a two time Super Bowl Champion using arrogance, intimidation and swagger.  Raider fans embraced being the bad boy team of the NFL, forming the Black Hole with crazy dressed fans sitting in the front row of the end zone.

Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable, 1 Corinthians 9:25.

During the 2012 presidential campaign between Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney, Senate Majority leader Harry Reid accused candidate Romney of not paying taxes for ten years.  When a reporter approached Reid, asking for proof of this allegation, senator Reid replied, “don’t ask me, go ask Mitt why he hasn’t paid his taxes in ten years.”  This false statement was repeated so many times by members of the media that American voters believed this lie to be true.  Thus, president Obama easily won his re-election in 2012, becoming a two term president.  Upon his retirement from the Senate, Harry Reid was asked by a reporter, “don’t you feel bad about spreading this lie about a political opponent?”  Reid’s response would make the late Al Davis proud, “We won didn’t we.”  This comment speaks volumes about the “Just Win Baby” mentality in politics, even if it mean spreading lies to gain a victory.

Therefore then, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1.

If you follow current events or politics, the past three years has become a combination of Big Brother, the Jerry Springer Show and a real life Survivor series.  This soap opera began with a Russian Conspiracy Theory, moved to Obstruction of Justice and now is fueled by a phone call between President Trump and the new Ukrainian president.  While this is all going on, some Democratic leaders in Congress are leading protests, participating in chants of “Impeach the Mother F’er.”  When the dust settles, I won’t be surprised if ten years from now when another retiring Democratic Senator is asked about the present will boast about spreading more lies.  While adopting a Just Win Baby mentality in sports seems logical, applying this same mindset to politics will disenfranchise voters, further divide this country and threatens to destroy our Constitution.  May God help us all.

Stirring Up Wars

Not much has changed since the Jets and the Sharks began their fictional turf war over a girl, Maria, in the 1961 musical West Side Story.  Today, anger, bitterness and discord have built up within human beings to create ideal conditions for dissension zones.  Good intentions often fade into the night as roots of bitterness suffocate any thoughts of forgiveness.  As a result, floodgates open up for a culture of bickering and backstabbing.

Beyond the boundaries of Super Powers, factions leave third world nations with a battlefield of broken hearts, fragile souls and shattered relationships.  Hatred has found a home, setting up shop as a spirit of division is holding unwilling citizens captive.  While once foreign, America has open its doors to this nature through reality television.  A generation of Jerry Springer and Jenny Jones viewers have spawned hits shows like Big Brother, Survivor and The Jersey Shore.  Seeking to get rich over night, individuals do whatever it takes, forsaking integrity, to achieve success and victory.

Going unnoticed by those with moral blinders on, the acts of the sinful nature has imprisoned lost souls, Galatians 5:19-21.  Selfish ambition has become their driving force, the wind beneath their misguided wings.  When you add envy and jealousy as fuel to this fire, carnage is aired daily through shows like Bad Boys, Cheaters and Divorce Court.  As long as comedy, sex and violence continue to sell, this process will repeat itself, stirring up more wars.  May God protect the innocent bystanders, caught in the crossfire of this mudslinging.  Pray the words of Galatians 5:16-18 so that this vicious cycle will end soon!

Big Brother

Initial thoughts of this title may lead people to images of the CBS reality show created by John de Mol.  The political savvy will likely be drawn in a different direction, thinking of the nickname for the federal government in the United States.  However, for the sake of brevity, today’s blog will address the idea that God is like a big brother.

Bully’s exist in every shape and form.  Whether this individual is a class mate, co-worker, neighbor, stalker or world power, from time to time, everyone needs a helping hand.  Psalm 125:1-2 suggests the Lord serves as a mountain of protection.  When your back is against the wall, pinned down by the travails of life, you need a big brother to come to the rescue.

When I was a 6th grader, I was a minority, attending an inner city Elementary with 90 % of the students either African American or Hispanic.  Since I was only 4’11” certain days were a living hell.  On a rough day, one of several bully’s attempted to shove me into a locker, in the process of closing the door on me.  Seeing my dire situation, God intervened sending a living giant to my aid.

Andre, one of my basketball friends during recess, 6 feet tall and close to 200 pounds in stature, easily put this bully in his place.  Throwing this student around like a rag doll,  Andre continued this drubbing until the boy vowed to never touch me again.  While your prayers might not be answered as direct as this one, don’t forget that God is like big brother, waiting to defend his younger siblings.
