The Rascals – A Beautiful Morning (Official Audio)

Inspiration Behind A Beautiful Morning:

The concept for A Beautiful Morning began with a specific focus. Starting each day with gratitude, hope and intention. The lyrics are filled with timeless philosophies and personal reflections designed to value each new day of the week. Core inspirations include new beginnings, nature’s beauty, human connection and inner motivation. Thoughts like these make every day a Beautiful Morning.

Biblical Application:

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here! – 2 Corinthians 5:16-17.

Exegesis of A Beautiful Morning:

It’s a beautiful morning, ah
I think I’ll go outside a while
And just smile
Just take in some clean, fresh air, boy

Having a beautiful morning is a state of mind, establishing a resolve to focus on the positive aspects of life.

Ain’t no sense in staying inside
If the weather’s fine and you’ve got the time
It’s your chance to wake up and plan another brand new day
Either way

This mindset is eager to seize each new day, making the most of the weather.

It’s a beautiful morning, ah
Each bird keeps singing his own song
So long
I’ve got to be on my way now

Looking for a reason to be thankful.

Ain’t no fun just hanging around
I’ve got to cover ground, you couldn’t keep me down
It just ain’t no good if the sun shines when you’re still inside
Shouldn’t hide, still inside, shouldn’t hide
Still inside, shouldn’t hide, still inside, oh, oh, oh

Progress, plans and passion prevent you from taking a day off. Action leads to results.

Ooh, ooh-ah-ah
Ooh, ooh-ah-ah

Agreeing that you need to go outside and seize each new day.

There will be children with robins and flowers
Sunshine caresses each new waking hour
Seems to me that people keep seeing more and more each day
Gotta say, lead the way, it’s okay, brand new day
Gotta say, it’s okay, brand new day, gotta say, lead the way, oh

Be a leader, make the most of each hour of sunlight and stay positive.

Ooh, ooh-ah-ah (oh, oh, oh)
Ooh, ooh-ah-ah (whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh)
Ooh, ooh-ah-ah (oh)
Ooh, ooh-ah-ah (oh, oh, oh)

There is no doubt as this will be a beautiful day.

Final Thoughts:

Positive people make homes, neighborhoods and schools a fun place to be. While this enthusiasm often wears off in adults, it doesn’t have to. When a leader sets a certain positive tone, others want to feed off of this energy. Developing a Beautiful Day mentality can transform a workplace into a great environment to be part of and join.

The Foundations – Build Me Up Buttercup (Lyric Video)

Inspiration Behind Build Me Up Buttercup:

The Foundations wanted to explore unrequited love and tension that exists within a relationship. Mike d’Abo and Tony Macaulay co-wrote Build Me Up Buttercup about a lover who is strung along by someone who is not interested in him. The Buttercup is symbolic of the flower and candy which highlights the complexities of affections and the desire to be connected with someone that you love.

Biblical Application:

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness, Colossians 2:6-7.

Exegesis of Build Me Up Buttercup:

Oh, why do you build me up (build me up)
Buttercup, baby, just to let me down (let me down)
And mess me around and then worst of all (worst of all)
You never call, baby when you say you will (say you will)
But I love you still, I need you (I need you)
More than anyone, darlin’
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up)
Buttercup, don’t break my heart

This man wants to be encouraged, not let down. Don’t play mind games with me. Especially when you don’t call. Yet this man still loves her, wanting to be uplifted without being dumped.

“I’ll be over at ten”, you told me time and again
But you’re late, I wait around and then (bah-dah-dah)
I went to the door, I can’t take anymore
Without you, you let me down again

This woman is stringing him along, not really caring about their relationship. This emotional strain is wearing this man out.

(Hey, hey, hey!) Baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey!) A little time and I’ll make you mine
(Hey, hey, hey!) I’ll be home
I’ll be beside the phone waiting for you

This man proclaims his dedication in this stanza.

Build me up (build me up)
Buttercup, don’t break my heart

Despite this verbal commitment, he wonders why she doesn’t build him up. This stanza highlights the complexities of their relationship. His greatest wish is not to have his heart broken.

You were my toy, but I could be the boy you adore
If you’d just let me know (bah-dah-dah)
Although you’re untrue, I’m attracted to you all the more
Why do I need you so

This man is fighting for the woman that he loves despite how she treats him.

(Hey, hey, hey!) Baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey!) A little time and I’ll make you mine
(Hey, hey, hey!) I’ll be home
I’ll be beside the phone waiting for you

Just give me a chance and I’ll prove my worth to you.

Why do you build me up (build me up)
Buttercup, baby, just to let me down (let me down)
And mess me around and then worst of all (worst of all)
You never call, baby when you say you will (say you will)
But I love you still, I need you (I need you)
More than anyone, darlin’
You know that I have from the start
Build me up (build me up)
Buttercup, don’t break my heart

His only request is to be affirmed and encouraged.

I-I-I need you (I need you)
More than anyone, baby
You know that I have from the start
Build me up (build me up)
Buttercup, don’t break my heart

This man believes that she will make him complete. He has done everything in his power to make this relationship work. Just don’t break my heart.

Final Thoughts:

When I was in junior high, hardly any girls knew that I existed. There was one girl who pretended to like me, flirting with me at the mall until I overheard her laughing with her friends about me. This continued for about a month until I finally stopped going to the mall. When I think of Build Me Up Buttercup, these are the emotions and feelings that hit home. The disappointments of junior high would be quickly forgotten by my final 2 years of high school. Facing adversity helps produce maturity, allowing me to recover and develop meaningful relationships a few years later.

Tommy James and the Shondells – Crimson & Clover

Inspiration Behind Crimson and Clover:

Tommy James woke up one morning thinking about his favorite color and flower. Upon combining crimson with clover, Tommy used poetry to blend these 2 elements together. Crimson and Clover contain themes of love and passion, fueled by deep emotions and natural beauty. While the remake of Crimson and Clover by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in 1982 received more attention in the music world, Tommy James and the Shondells crafted this song.

Biblical Application:

The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” – Isaiah 40:7-8

Exegesis of Crimson and Clover:

Ah, now I don’t hardly know her
But I think I can love her
Crimson and clover

The poetry portion of this song kept the lyrics to 4 stanzas. However, the actual song repeats these stanzas several times. From afar, Crimson and Clover are compared to a woman. The more you stare, there is a belief that you can love this woman.

Ah, now when she comes walkin’ over
Now I’ve been waitin’ to show her
Crimson and clover
Over and over

As this woman approaches, you have been waiting to show her something, a red flower and some clovers.

Yeah, if I’m not such a sweet thing
I wanna do everything
What a beautiful feelin’
Crimson and clover
Over and over

This man reveals his flaw but is eager to do whatever it takes to impress her. Perhaps there is a sexual innuendo behind crimson and clover.

Crimson and clover, over and over
Crimson and clover, over and over
Crimson and clover, over and over
Crimson and clover, over and ove

Either this is simply Tommy jamming to his favorite color and flower or the over and over has some sort of infatuation built into the lyrics. The more you gaze upon this natural beauty or a specific woman, the greater your attraction becomes.

Final Thoughts:

As someone who went to college to study golf course design and maintenance, I am big into flowers and fauna. As I build a 9-hole disc golf course on my property, I love adding elements of ornamental grasses, shrubs and wildflowers. Although this property is void of crimson at the present, when the flowers start to blossom this spring, there will be some crimson and random patches of clover to pop up. To me Crimson and Clover are part of this color spectrum, brightening up landscapes across the country.

The Outfield – Your Love (Official HD Video)

Inspiration Behind Your Love:

The Outfield had the unique ability to craft songs that resonated with a teenage audience. Guitarist John Spinks wrote Your Love in 20 minutes. John sought to capture the essence of longing and desire within a teen who is in love. Although the lyrics of Your Love are vague in certain portions, there is a sense of urgency to act upon your feelings. Your Love is one of the hit songs from the Outfield’s album Play Deep, suggesting don’t let anything get over your head.

Biblical Application:

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other, Galatians 5:13-15.

Exegesis of Your Love:

Josie’s on a vacation far away
Come around and talk it over
So many things that I want to say
You know I like my girls a little bit older?

The lyrics start with a couple separated by distance. Thoughts are racing with a comment about dating older girls.

I just want to use your love tonight
I don’t want to lose your love tonight

The initial portion of this chorus is selfish and then turns to a fear of losing this love.

I ain’t got many friends left to talk to
Nowhere to run when I’m in trouble
You know I’d do anything for you
Stay the night but keep it under cover

This relationship has left this boy without many friends to talk to. There’s a comment about commitment and offer to spend the night, keeping this confidential.

I just want to use your love tonight, whoa
I don’t want to lose your love tonight

There is a sense of urgency to take advantage of this moment together.

Try to stop my hands from shaking
But something in my mind’s not making sense
It’s been a while since we were all alone
But I can’t hide the way I’m feeling

The awkwardness between two teenagers. There is a sense of excitement, confusion and uncertainty.

As you’re leaving, please would you close the door?
And don’t forget what I told you
Just ’cause you’re right, that don’t mean I’m wrong
Another shoulder to cry upon

There is an agreement to keep this one night together secret. There is a disagreement, but an future offer to have a shoulder to lean on in times of need.

I just want to use your love tonight, yeah
I don’t want to lose your love tonight, yeah
I just want to use your love tonight
I don’t want to lose your love tonight
I just want to use your love tonight
I don’t want to lose your love tonight

This extended chorus is like a call to seize this moment together.

Use your love, lose your love (your love), use your love
(I don’t wanna lose) lose your, tonight
(I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna lose)
Lose your, tonight (your love)
Lose your, tonight (your love, your love, ah)
Lose your, tonight (your love)
I don’t want to lose your love tonight
(Your love) use your, tonight

There is a degree of second guessing, unsure if this is the right thing to do.

Final Thoughts:

This song serves as a reminder that distance makes the heart grow fonder. Unfortunately, when you are a young teenager, temptation leads human beings into making bad choices. When you have friends that hold you accountable, you’ll have a better chance from escaping temptation, 1 Corinthians 10:13. The key is keeping in step with the Holy Spirit, Galatians 5:25, by fleeing the passions of your flesh.

Meat Loaf – Paradise By The Dashboard Light (Official Video)

Inspiration Behind Paradise:

Jim Steinman and Meatloaf worked together on the National Lampoon Road Tour before developing the idea for Paradise. Steinman began to explore teenage desires and obsessions using exaggerated storytelling. This is how baseball terminology is weaved into Paradise. When hormones are full blown, knowing how far is too far gets blurred in moments of passion. Meatloaf’s girlfriend, Ellen Foley worked with Meatloaf on the lyrics, wanting some form of commitment before having sex. This is where many relationships stall, when a commitment to a future together is put on hold.

Biblical Application:

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body[a] in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5.

Exegesis of Paradise:

Well I remember every little thing
As if it happened only yesterday
Parking by the lake
And there was not another car in sight
And I never had a girl
Looking any better than you did
And all the kids at school
They were wishing they were me that night

This opening stanza is like a scene from Happy Days, going to Inspiration Point, as teenagers park their car to make out with their girlfriend.

And now our bodies are oh so close and tight
It never felt so good, it never felt so right
And we’re glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
Glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
C’mon! Hold on tight!
C’mon! Hold on tight!

The lyrics point to a romantic embrace filled with passion.

Though it’s cold and lonely in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dashboard light

A little light in this car reveals a dark remote location.

Ain’t no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
‘Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed
Ain’t no doubt about it
Baby got to go and shout it
Ain’t no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
‘Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed

Meatloaf identifies this special moment to paradise, thinking about having sex.

Baby don’t you hear my heart
You got it drowning out the radio
I’ve been waiting so long
For you to come along and have some fun
Well I gotta let you know
No, you’re never gonna regret it
So open up your eyes I got a big surprise
It’ll feel all right
Well I wanna make your motor run

The hormones of two teenagers are out of control.

And now our bodies are oh so close and tight
It never felt so good, it never felt so right
And we’re glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
Glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
C’mon! Hold on tight!
Well c’mon! Hold on tight!

The lyrics point to a combination of lust and love between two teenagers.

Though it’s cold and lonely in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dashboard light
Though it’s cold and lonely in the deep dark night
(Lonely in the deep dark night)
Paradise by the dashboard light

The car is running but these two teens are providing the heat.

You got to do what you can
And let Mother Nature do the rest
Ain’t no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
‘Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely-

Meatloaf is trying to pressure his girl into having sex.

We’re gonna go all the way tonight, we’re gonna go all the way and tonight’s the night
We’re gonna go all the way tonight we’re gonna go all the way and tonight’s the night
We’re gonna go all the way tonight we’re gonna go all the way and tonight’s the night
We’re gonna go all the way tonight we’re gonna go all the way and tonight’s the night

Tonight is the night Meatloaf has been waiting for his entire life.

OK, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker going here
Two down, nobody on, no score, bottom of the ninth
There’s the windup, and there it is, a line shot up the middle
Look at him go. This boy can really fly!
He’s rounding first and really turning it on now
He’s not letting up at all, he’s gonna try for second
The ball is bobbled out in center
And here comes the throw, and what a throw!
He’s gonna slide in head first, here he comes, he’s out!
No, wait, safe – safe at second base
This kid really makes things happen out there
Batter steps up to the plate
Here’s the pitch and he’s going, and what a jump he’s got
He’s trying for third, here’s the throw, it’s in the dirt – safe at third!
Holy cow, stolen base! He’s taking a pretty big lead out there
Almost daring him to try and pick him off
The pitcher glances over, winds up, and it’s bunted
Bunted down the third base line, the suicide squeeze is on!
Here he comes, squeeze play, it’s gonna be close
Here’s the throw, here’s the play at the plate
Holy cow, I think he’s gonna make it!

This is the baseball metaphor, using each base to represent getting closer to home, sex.

Stop right there!
I gotta know right now!
Before we go any further!
Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife?
Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me happy for the rest of my life?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife?
I gotta know right now
Before we go any further
Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?

This is where Ellen draws the line, stopping at third base.

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
I’ll give you an answer in the morning
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
I’ll give you an answer in the morning
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
I’ll give you an answer in the morning

Meatloaf is stalling, trying to wear Ellen down.

I gotta know right now
Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife?
I gotta know right now!
Before we go any further
Do you love me?

And will you love me forever?

Ellen views the act of sex sacred like getting married.

What’s it going to be boy?
C’mon I can wait all night
What’s it gonna be boy? Yes or no?
What’s it gonna be boy?
Yes or no?

Ellen is waiting for an answer, a sign of commitment and a future together.

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Well let me sleep on it
I’ll give you an answer in the morning
I gotta know right now!

Meatloaf again postpones his decision.

Do you love me? (let me sleep on it)
Will you love me forever? (Baby baby, let me sleep on it) do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life? (Let me sleep on it)
Will you take me away, will you make me your wife? (I’ll give you an answer in the morning)
I gotta know right now
Before we go any further
Do you love me? Will you love me forever?

Like a debate, Ellen and Meatloaf go back and forth.

Let me sleep on it! (will you love me forever?)
Let me sleep on it! (will you love me forever?)

This is the art of persuasion.

I couldn’t take it any longer, Lord I was crazed
And when the feeling came upon me like a tidal wave
Started swearing to my god and on my mother’s grave
That I would love you to the end of time
I swore I would love you to the end of time!

Love makes people do crazy things.

So now I’m praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
‘Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don’t think that I can really survive
I’ll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I’m praying for the end of time
It’s all that I can do
Praying for the end of time
So I can end my time with you!

This is how most men today view marriage, as something to hold you down.

Well it was long ago and it was far away
And it was so much better that it is today
Well it was long ago and it was far away (it never felt so good)
And it was so much better that it is today (it never felt so right, and it was glowing like the metal)
It was long ago and it was far away (on the edge of a knife, it never felt so good)
And it was so much better that it is today (it never felt so right, and it was glowing like the metal)
Well it was long ago and it was far away (on the edge of a knife, it never felt so good)
And it was so much better that it is today (it never felt so right, and it was glowing like the metal)
Well it was long ago and it was far away (on the edge of a knife, it never felt so good)
And it was so much better that it is today (it never felt so right, and it was glowing like the metal)
Well it was long ago and it was far away (on the edge of a knife, it never felt so good)
And it was so much better that it is today (it never felt so right, and it was glowing like the metal)
It was long ago and it was far away (on the edge of a knife, it never felt so good)
And it was so much better that it is today (it never felt so right, and it was glowing like the metal)

Time has eroded the passion Meatloaf once possessed. Meatloaf has fond memories of his youth, thinking things were better back then than today.

Final Thoughts:

Morality in America and in churches today has declined greatly in the past 30 years. Compromise, justification and temptation have become part of everyday life. Hanging on to your virginity until marriage is rare today. Yet to the disciplined who won’t allow themselves to be placed into compromising positions, it is possible to please God by avoiding passion lust. This is part of the Girls Gone Mild Movement, waiting patiently for the right person to come along.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway To Heaven (Official Audio)

Inspiration Behind Stairway to Heaven:

Jimmy Paige and Robert Plant received inspiration from the serene surrounding of Bron-Yr-Aur in Wales. This collaboration blended mystical folk influences with a progressive rock vision. Living in a remote cottage, Paige began to experiment with acoustic guitar chords while Robert started writing the lyrics. As the Stairway to Heaven began to take shape, Paige envisioned a piece that would accelerate and intensify from start to finish, using a layer textures and overdubs to complete this masterpiece.

Biblical Application:

Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it, Genesis 28:10-12.

Exegesis of Stairway to Heaven:

There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to Heaven

This song begins with a woman who believes that by using materialism, her worldly wealth, a spot in heaven can be purchased.

When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Ooh, ooh, and she’s buying a stairway to Heaven

Robert Plant paints a picture of a wealthy woman going shopping, willing to pay whatever the price for a way into heaven.

There’s a sign on the wall, but she wants to be sure
‘Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings

This woman looks for a sales associate to confirm if this piece, a stairway to heaven is for sale.

In a tree by the brook, there’s a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

It’s unclear if this setting is nearby or at the top of the stairway. Things aren’t always what they appear as the thoughts in human minds can be deceiving.

Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, makes me wonder

Heaven is a topic which makes human being contemplate the afterlife.

There’s a feeling I get when I look to the West
And my spirit is crying for leaving

This reference is likely referring to leaving their remote cottage in Wales, traveling west back to the United States for their next tour.

In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking

This could be a reference to Far East mysticism, people performing some type of sacred ritual.

Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, really makes me wonder

During the 1970’s and 1980’s, many bands were searching for meaning in life. Musicians would dabble in different religions, looking for answers. Groups like U2 went through a Christian phase with albums Someday Bloody Sunday and the Unforgettable Fire.

And it’s whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason

While pied pipers played an instrument, they also represent strong leaders who guide lost individuals toward the truth.

And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter

Oh-oh-oh-oh-whoa

As a new age, day begins, those who have not wavered, standing strong, will be rewarded.

If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow, don’t be alarmed now
It’s just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There’s still time to change the road you’re on

Perhaps a reference to Jesus in Matthew 7:13-14, the broad road that leads to destruction and barrow path which few follow.

And it makes me wonder
Ohh, whoa

These two options in life make Robert Plant think.

Your head is humming, and it won’t go, in case you don’t know
The piper’s calling you to join him

Thoughts can bombard your mind as a modern-day piper is urging you to join him.

Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow? And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

Perhaps Plant is the sales associate trying to convince this woman shopper that you can’t buy your way into heaven.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one, and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll

A stanza representing universalism. If everyone gets into heaven, what’s the point of living a holy life, pleasing to God.

And she’s buying a stairway to Heaven

This woman is putting her faith into materialism, not the God of the Bible.

Final Thoughts:

When Stairway to Heaven first came out, there were rumors that if you played this song backwards on a record player, this song was of the Devil. Yet, when you analyze the lyrics, Robert Plant is searching for meaning in life. If Robert realized that you couldn’t buy your way into heaven, he was on the right track. Unfortunately, in the spiritual dimension unveiled in Ephesians 6:12, there are invisible forces tugging rock stars toward the highway to hell. The answer that many are searching for can be found in 1 John 5:11-13. This is the assurance of knowing you can secure your eternal destination before you die.

MILEY CYRUS – THE CLIMB (Lyrics)

Inspiration Behind the Climb:

The Climb was conceived by Jessi Alexander and Jon Mabe. Both writers drew from their experiences in the music industry, recognizing that every project contains obstacles in the way. While playing her guitar one day, the melody to the Climb came to Jessi. The lyrics was inspired by feeling like an underdog in the music industry. Words like “it’s not a race” point to a steady climb to the top.

Biblical Application:

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint, Isaiah 40:28-31.

Exegesis of the Climb:

I can almost see it
That dream I’m dreaming
But there’s a voice inside my head saying
You’ll never reach it

Doubt and unbelief are some of the greatest obstacles to fulfilling dreams you have in life.

Every step I’m taking
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking

Sometimes a lack of direction or progress makes you second guess yourself.

But I, I gotta keep trying
Gotta keep my head held high

Reaching your dreams involves a spirit from within to press on.

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb

Life is a marathon, not a sprint. You have to pace yourself, make necessary sacrifices and wait until dreams come true.

The struggles I’m facing
The chances I’m taking
Sometimes might knock me down, but
No, I’m not breaking

Not every song is a success. Failure provides opportunities for personal growth.

I may not know it
But these are the moments, that
I’m gonna remember most, yeah
Just gotta keep going

Certain rejections in life make you more determined to work harder than ever before.

And I, I gotta be strong
Just keep pushing on, ’cause

Don’t give up. Rather, keep pressing on.

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb

After reaching one goal, there will be other barriers in life to slow your progress down. You’re not always going to be successful. It doesn’t matter how long it takes as long as you reach your dreams.

Yeah

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes you’re gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb
Yeah, yeah

This repetitive chorus reinforces that the journey to success is a process that takes time.

Keep on moving, keep climbing
Keep the faith, baby
It’s all about, it’s all about the climb
Keep your faith, keep your faith
Whoa

Keep your faith as you climb. As C.S. Lewis once said, success is the process of arriving.

Final Thoughts:

From a writer’s perspective I’ve dabbled in many different disciplines. I started as a poet, tried songwriting, reached over into short stories and graduated toward screen writing. While I have failed more than anything, I’m still a work in progress as I start my own climb. Where I end up, only God knows, but I press on to express the ideas that God puts on my heart.

Capital Kings – I Can’t Quit (ft. Reconcile) [Official Music Video]

Inspiration Behind I Can’t Quit:

Capital Kings wanted to create to song centered around a message of resilience and determination. The lyrics point to a theme of perseverance by pushing through life’s challenges while staying true to one’s goals. The chorus and title I Can’t Quit serves as a heightened state of determination. Regardless of how bad your situation may get, maintain a resolve to persevere.

Biblical Application:

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[b] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail,” Luke 1:34-37.

Exegesis of I Can’t Quit:

Yeah, yeah
Ain’t, ain’t no way I’m slowing this down
If you see me coming through
Then just know it’s ’bout to get loud

Nothing is going to stop or slow down the progress being made in life.

Okay, I’ve been up for like four days
Paranoia man, I can’t think straight
My mind’s gone in another place
But that’s not how you start
It’s how you finish the race

Despite all the distractions and obstacles, there is a resolve to finish strong.

Say, “Woop!”
Yeah

And I know that it sound like me, it is but it ain’t
My life stays one hundred like it was a bank
Either following up or you’re watching on tape
End up a quitter, that’s something I ain’t

Regardless of what happens, quitting isn’t an option.

I can’t quit (no)
Ain’t nobody flexing with me
I can’t quit (I can’t do it)
I got the keys for the city
I can’t quit (no)
I get it poppin’ like Diddy
I can’t quit (woo)
All of my partners legit
I can’t quit

This mind is fixated on a resolve to persevere.

Put those, put those hands up

Lord knows I got hosts, started rollin’
I see hate in they eyes
Know yourself, know your team
Do they want you to win?

There are vocal doubters, haters and others jealousy of his success in life.

I done failed ’bout a hundred times
More I fall then the more I climb
Have fun, say it with me
Long as He got me, I’m winning

Failure is a part of life, but climbing over defeat is the key to victory.

Oh Lord, I’m a hundred proof
Never quitting and I never lose
Oh Lord, I can see it now
Hands up, I’ma lay it down

A prayer for a mindset to never quit.

Hundred players on the ground
Unashamed, hit the ground
Young king need the crown
My heart, I lay it down

This stanza suggests a desire to give his heart to Jesus.

Can’t stop it now, overcoming
I’m giving it every part of me
Oh this is sick, I’m all about it
Oh no, oh no, oh

Perhaps, this section hints to the Lordship of Christ, living his life as an open book to God.

I can’t quit (woo, woo)
Ain’t nobody flexing with me
I can’t quit
I got the keys for the city
I can’t quit (whippin’ it, whippin’ it)
I get it poppin’ like Diddy
I can’t quit (yeah)
All of my partners legit
I can’t quit

Quitting is not an option.

Final Thoughts:

I was told by doctors that my athletic career was over after suffering a 1 in 100 thousand injury to my left ankle at age 16. After this surgery, there was more optimism, but the odds were still not in may favor. This crisis led me to adopt a “I can’t quit” mindset. Three months later, I was in a swimming pool competing for a state championship. settling for a bronze. I didn’t miss a sports season, finishing my final 2 seasons of golf, and senior year of cross country and swimming. This is what is possible when God fills you with an “I Can’t Quit” attitude.

Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer

Inspiration Behind Livin’ on a Prayer:

This song reflects the economic realities of growing up at the bottom end of the middle class. While the characters Tommy and Gina within this song are fictional, the lyrics of Livin’ on a Prayer reflect life experiences of guitarist Richie Sambora. Richie’s Uncle Sal worked on the docks, struggling to make a living. However, the theme of Livin’ on a Prayer points to maintaining a Christian faith despite the struggles of living paycheck to paycheck.

Biblical Application:

“I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”“No,” they answered. He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish, John 21:3-6.

Exegesis of Livin’ on a Prayer:

Once upon a time
Not so long ago

Using a common storyline opening to begin this song.

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union’s been on strike, he’s down on his luck
It’s tough
So tough

Tommy who in real life was Uncle Sal is unable to make any money due to the union strike.

Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man
She brings home her pay, for love
Mm, for love

Gina had to pick up extra shifts to make up the monthly difference of income.

She says, “We’ve gotta hold on to what we’ve got
It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not
We got each other, and that’s a lot for love
We’ll give it a shot”

These lyrics point a different era in America when married couples were taught to stay together to death do us part. Sure, the current sacrifices Gina had to make sucks, but they have each other for love and support.

Oh, we’re halfway there
Oh-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand, we’ll make it, I swear
Oh-oh, livin’ on a prayer

The halfway either point to halfway through the month or the Union strike. Living paycheck to paycheck sometimes requires lots of prayer.

Tommy’s got his six-string in hock
Now he’s holding in what he used to make it talk
So tough
Mm, it’s tough

Tommy needed to start selling some valuable possessions to avoid defaulting on their loan or rent.

Gina dreams of running away
She cries in the night, Tommy whispers
“Baby, it’s okay”
Someday

This couple has reached their breaking point, but Tommy provides leadership and hope.

We’ve gotta hold on to what we’ve got
It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not
We got each other, and that’s a lot for love
We’ll give it a shot

A call to stick together, rise above their current trial.

Oh, we’re halfway there
Oh-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand, we’ll make it, I swear
Oh-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Livin’ on a prayer

Praying with a sense of urgency.

Ooh, we gotta hold on, ready or not
You live for the fight when that’s all that you’ve got

Don’t give up hope. Keep the faith.

Whoa, we’re halfway there
Whoa-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand, and we’ll make it, I swear
Whoa-oh, livin’ on a prayer

In real life, Uncle Sal kept his family together through this financial crisis.

Whoa, we’re halfway there
Whoa-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it, I swear
Whoa-oh, livin’ on a prayer

During tough times, you need a leader like Sal, who believes they will survive.

Whoa, we’re halfway there
Whoa-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it, I swear
Whoa-oh

Leaders are willing take the hand of the doubting and press on with the faith to endure this current storm.

Final Thoughts:

Before attending a youth ministry trade school, I was living in my sister’s basement. I had 2 jobs and made $100 per month. Most of that went toward gas and food. From a financial standpoint, I was on the verge of being homeless. Yet, Christian friends and my faith got me through these times. I was living on a prayer and God provided for my needs.

Little Big Town – Tornado (Official Music Video)

Inspiration Behind Tornado:

Little Big Town uses tornado as a metaphor. Rather than build a song around a destructive force of nature, the lyrics illustrates what happens when a woman filled with anger and vengeance leaves her own destruction path on human souls. While the music video makes listeners expect to see a real tornado at any moment, this debris field leaves behind mental and spiritual scars from a disgruntled woman.

Biblical Application:

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many, Hebrews 12:14-15.

Exegesis of Tornado:

Thought you’ll change the weather
Start a little storm, make a little rain
But I’m gonna do one better
Have the sun until you pray

When someone is about to lose their composure, there are obvious signs like a raised voice, a change is emotions and venomous speech. Tornados have their own warning signs in the sky. Karen Fairplay wants to do one better with an odd play on words to end this opening stanza.

I’m a tornado looking for a soul to take
You’re gonna see me coming by the selfish things that you did
I’m gonna leave you guessing have this fun on this gonna hit I’m a tornado, looking for a man to break

Hurt people have a tendency to want to inflict the people who hurt them. This is the payback that is referred to.

Yeah, I’m gonna leave this house, spinning all around
Tossing in the air and playing in the ground
Make sure you’ll never found

Like the wrath from a twister, the angry brewing wants to leave a similar path of destruction.

Thought you’ll take the swing try another girl, try another night
But it’s not pain that brings my force of nature back to life
I’m a tornado, what’s done gotta left by

Sometimes human beings try to play God, seeking to payback the harm done to their soul.

Hey I’m gonna leave this house, spin it all around
Tossing in the air and put it in the ground
I’m gonna leave this house, spin it all around
Tossing in the air and put it in the groun
d
Make sure you’ll never find, oh yeah

This is what happens when you allow the root of bitterness to consume your soul.

Hey I’m gonna leave this house, spin it all around
Tossing in the air and put it in the ground
Yeah, I’m gonna leave this house, spin it all around
Tossing in the air and put it in the ground
Make sure you’ll never find

The lyrics suggest that she wants to bury her ex-boyfriend, sending a bad message,

The winds are getting stronger and the sky is falling through
You ain’t got much longer till the rage rips off the roof
I’m a tornado and I’m coming after you

When common sense is gone, anger and rage take over.

Final Thoughts:

The older I become; I try to be a peace maker. Yet, in my younger years, I had a short fuse, going off at a moment’s notice. My anger management issue took more than a decade to finally control. When you become open to letting Jesus come into your life, Romans 10:9-11, this transformation is possible, but it takes time.
