Thin Lizzy – The Boys Are Back In Town (Official Lyric Video)

Inspiration Behind the Boys are Back in Town:

While this song is referring to the Manchester underworld, sports broadcasters in America use Thin Lizzy’s The Boys are Back in Town as a way to let fans know that their baseball team is back in town. One of the theories is that the boys are referring to the Quality Street Gang who Thin Lizzy encountered as a child at his mother’s nightclub. Members of this group were known for their sharp stylish attire worn at local clubs.

Biblical Application:

A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil. 20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm, Proverbs 13:19-20.

Exegesis of the Boys are Back in Town:

Guess who just got back today
Them wild-eyed boys that had been away
Haven’t changed, hadn’t much to say
But, man, I still think them cats are crazy

Either Thin Lizzy has been out at one of the local Manchester clubs or a friend let him know that members of the Quality Street Gang are back.

They were asking if you were around
How you was, where you could be found
I told them you were living downtown
Driving all the old men crazy

Some of the guys were looking for an old friend.

The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town
(I said) the boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town
The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town

This chorus lets everyone in Manchester know this gang is back.

You know that chick that used to dance a lot?
Every night she’d be on the floor, shaking what she’d got
Man, when I tell you she was cool, she was red hot
I mean, she was steaming

Thin Lizzy recalls one of the regulars who was attractive and a great dancer.

And that time over at Johnny’s place
Well, this chick got up and she slapped Johnny’s face
Man, we just fell about the place
If that chick don’t wanna know, forget her

Thin Lizzy is reminiscing about memorable events that stand out in his mind.

The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town
(I said) the boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town
The boys are back in town, boys are back in town

Repetitive chorus lets everyone know who is back.

Spread the word around
“Guess who’s back in town?”
Just spread the word around

The word is spreading as Manchester seems excited to have these boys back.

Friday night, they’ll be dressed to kill
Down at Dino’s Bar and Grill
The drink will flow and blood will spill
And if the boys want to fight, you better let them

Thin Lizzy summarizes a typical night at one of the local clubs.

That jukebox in the corner blasting out my favourite song
The nights are getting warmer, it won’t be long
Won’t be long ’til summer comes
Now that the boys are here again

Warm weather brings back locals and tourists.

The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town

Thin Lizzy is excited to see the guys.

The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town
(Spread the word around)
The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town
(The boys are back, the boys are back)

Thin Lizzy looked up to this gang when he was younger.

The boys are back in town again
Been hanging down at Dino’s
The boys are back in town again

Word on the street allows Thin Lizzy to catch up with these guys.

Final Thoughts:

Every town has a local hangout that is hopping every weekend. For me, this place was the Charcoal Pit, a diner on the main drag which served great ice cream dishes. With a mini jukebox in every booth, teenagers were coming and going throughout the night, bouncing to the music. If I wanted to see one of my friends, this is where I would go either on or after my date. Some of my fondest memories of high school occurred at the Charcoal Pit. Subsequently, I understand Thin Lizzy’s desire to connect with old friends.

MILEY CYRUS – THE CLIMB (Lyrics)

Inspiration Behind the Climb:

The Climb was conceived by Jessi Alexander and Jon Mabe. Both writers drew from their experiences in the music industry, recognizing that every project contains obstacles in the way. While playing her guitar one day, the melody to the Climb came to Jessi. The lyrics was inspired by feeling like an underdog in the music industry. Words like “it’s not a race” point to a steady climb to the top.

Biblical Application:

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint, Isaiah 40:28-31.

Exegesis of the Climb:

I can almost see it
That dream I’m dreaming
But there’s a voice inside my head saying
You’ll never reach it

Doubt and unbelief are some of the greatest obstacles to fulfilling dreams you have in life.

Every step I’m taking
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking

Sometimes a lack of direction or progress makes you second guess yourself.

But I, I gotta keep trying
Gotta keep my head held high

Reaching your dreams involves a spirit from within to press on.

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb

Life is a marathon, not a sprint. You have to pace yourself, make necessary sacrifices and wait until dreams come true.

The struggles I’m facing
The chances I’m taking
Sometimes might knock me down, but
No, I’m not breaking

Not every song is a success. Failure provides opportunities for personal growth.

I may not know it
But these are the moments, that
I’m gonna remember most, yeah
Just gotta keep going

Certain rejections in life make you more determined to work harder than ever before.

And I, I gotta be strong
Just keep pushing on, ’cause

Don’t give up. Rather, keep pressing on.

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb

After reaching one goal, there will be other barriers in life to slow your progress down. You’re not always going to be successful. It doesn’t matter how long it takes as long as you reach your dreams.

Yeah

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes you’re gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb
Yeah, yeah

This repetitive chorus reinforces that the journey to success is a process that takes time.

Keep on moving, keep climbing
Keep the faith, baby
It’s all about, it’s all about the climb
Keep your faith, keep your faith
Whoa

Keep your faith as you climb. As C.S. Lewis once said, success is the process of arriving.

Final Thoughts:

From a writer’s perspective I’ve dabbled in many different disciplines. I started as a poet, tried songwriting, reached over into short stories and graduated toward screen writing. While I have failed more than anything, I’m still a work in progress as I start my own climb. Where I end up, only God knows, but I press on to express the ideas that God puts on my heart.

Survivor – Eye Of The Tiger (Official HD Video)

Inspiration Behind Eye of the Tiger:

Eye of the Tiger was written for Rocky II, featuring the rematch between Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa. Slyvester Stallone worked with Survivor to ensure that the lyrics fit into the theme’s resilience and triumph. The concept of developing the Eye of the Tiger became a cultural phenomenon in the 1980’s as athletics went into strict training to obtain this mental edge.

Biblical Application:

Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come, 1 Timothy 4:7-8.

Exegesis of Eye of the Tiger:

Risin’ up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

In Rocky I, Rocky went the distance but lost the judge’s decision to Apollo. Once the date for a rematch was set, Rocky went into strict training to prepare for this title bout.

So many times, it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

Once you reach a certain level in sports, don’t let glory steal your passion. Stay hungry, don’t settle for anything less and develop a mental toughness to keep your dreams alive.

It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger

Trainers are looking to give their boxer the mental edge, void of any fear. This is where athletics are tested to push their body to the limits. The goal is to out prepare your opponent and acquire the Eye of the Tiger, waiting to pounce on your opponent at the moment they show signs of weakness.

Face to face, out on the heat
Hangin’ tough, stayin’ hungry
They stack the odds still we take to the street
For the kill, with the skill to survive

This stanza speaks to the competitive nature, drive and hunger that elite athletes possess.

It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger

This chorus highlights the mindset that Rocky adopted going into this title fight. The Eye of the Tiger is associated with a refusal to lose, despite what the odds may be.

Risin’ up, straight to the top
Had the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I’m not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive

Rocky is trying to repeat his incredible feat in Rocky I, but this time wanting to end this bout walking home with the title belt.

It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger

The Eye of the Tiger was adopted by some sports psychologists, wanting their client to develop this edge, a mental toughness unlike any other competitive.

The eye of the tiger

The eye of the tiger

The eye of the tiger

The eye of the tiger

The Eye of the Tiger is the goal, a mindset that will often become the deciding factor between winning and losing.

Final Thoughts:

I ran cross-country and swam in high school. Before any race or swimming event, I would be listening to my Walkman, getting pumped up before this competition. While I never reached my full potential due to a major ankle reconstruction surgery, music pushed me to reach new heights Listening to Eye of the Tiger lead me to reach personal records running and swimming. This is the impact that Eye of the Tiger had on my life.

Gloria Gaynor – I Will Survive

Inspiration Behind I Will Survive:

Gloria Gaynor’s song was inspired by situations which taught her to discover resilience and strength. The lyrics focus on a devastating breakup and Gloria’s journey to recover. This life experience enabled Gloria to overcome adversity, finding strength from within to press on without this significant other.

Biblical Application:

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it, Hebrews 12:7-11.

Exegesis of I Will Survive:

At first I was afraid
I was Petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
Without you by my side

After being dumped, Gloria doubted that she would ever recover.

But then I spent so many night
Thinking how you did me wrong
And I grew strong
And I learned how to get along

Many nights of reflection helped Gloria realize that she wasn’t treated with respect. This season of growth enabled Gloria to mature and recover.

And so you’re back
From outer space
I just walked in to find you here
With that sad look upon your face

Gloria had no room in her heart to take him back.

I should have change that stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second
You’d be back to bother me

Gloria wished she took financial steps to prevent him from coming back to her place.

Go on now go
Walk out the door
Just turn around now
‘Cause you’re not welcome anymore

Gloria doesn’t hesitate, immediately asking her ex to leave.

Weren’t you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
You think I’d crumble
You think I’d lay down and die

I’m done with your stupid mind games.

Oh no not I
I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love
I know I’ll stay alive

Gloria will be fine on her own, letting love lead the way.

I’ve got all my life to live
And I got all my love to give
I’ll survive
I will survive
Hey hey

This chorus magnifies that Gloria has fully recovered from this devastating breakup.

It took all the strength I had
Not to fall apart
Kept trying hard to mend the pieces
Of my broken heart

A glimpse of the heartache that Gloria endured.

And I spent oh so many nights
Just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
But now I hold my head up high

This wasn’t easy but crying has now turned into recovery and rebirth.

And you see me
Somebody new
I’m not that chained up little person
Still in love with you

Gloria is glad that she is free from this past relationship.

And so you felt like dropping in
And just expect me to be free
Well now I’m saving all my loving
For someone who’s loving me

Gloria learned to invest her time into men who appreciate and love her.

Go on now go
Walk out the door
Just turn round now
You’re not welcome anymore

Gloria doesn’t give her ex a second chance, shutting him out.

Weren’t you the one who tried to break me with goodbye
You think I’d crumble
You think I’d lay down and die

I’m not the same woman I was before.

Oh no not I
I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love
I know I’ll stay alive

I’ll be fine without you as I wait for true love.

I got all my life to live
And I’ve got all my love to give
And I’ll survive
I will survive
Oh

This chorus serves as an anthem for Gloria’s new perspective on life.

Go on now go
Walk out the door
Just turn around now
You’re not welcome anymore

Gloria didn’t wait to repeat the same mistakes of her past.

Weren’t you the one who tried to break me with goodbye
You think I’d crumble
You think I’d lay down and die

Gloria is now mentally tough to recognize the games her ex tried to play.

Oh no not I
I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love
I know I’ll stay alive

She is better off without him.

I’ve got all my life to give
And I’ve got all my love to give
And I’ll survive
I will survive
I will survive

Gloria is ready for the next phase in her life, waiting on love.

Final Thoughts:

As someone who was dumped multiple times in high school, I spent too much time dwelling on my past instead of looking forward to the future like Gloria. During my 5 years of college, I matured, breaking off friendships with girls who took an emotional toll on my soul. My recovery occurred through Christian friends and my relationship with Jesus. To individuals who grew up in a strict household, you learned right from wrong, even if it was painful. The people who really care about you will confront areas that you need to address. If you want the very best for someone, flawed characteristics need to be corrected until you reach your full potential in life. Although these conversations can be dicey, experiencing tough love will make you a better person in the future.

Lean on Me

Inspiration Behind Lean on Me:

The lyrics of Lean on Me was inspired by Bill Withers rural upbringing in West Virginia. Bill recalls the strong sense of community that surrounded him growing up. This part of West Virginia was filled with friendship, mutual support and the importance of being there for one another in times of need. When Bill moved to Los Angeles to pursue his musical career, he initially felt isolated, lost in a big city. This is the context which led Bill to write Lean on Me, paying tribute to his past.

Biblical Application:

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”[a] 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you, 1 Peter 5:5-7.

Exegesis of Lean on Me:

Hmm… hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm
Hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm
Hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm
Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain
We all have sorrow

Bill is likely thinking about his struggle to adjust to living alone in California.

But if we are wise
We know that there’s always tomorrow

Bill looks to his past to find hope for the future.

Lean on me
When you’re not strong
And I’ll be your friend
I’ll help you carry on…

This is what Bill experienced while growing up in West Virginia.

For it won’t be long
Till I’m gonna need somebody to lean on

Repay the encouragement that you have received from others.

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow

It’s okay to ask for help.

For no one can fill
Those of your needs that you won’t let show

Don’t be afraid to open up and share what’s really going on in your life.

You just call on me brother when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on

Be available for a friend.

I just might have a problem that you’ll understand
We all need somebody to lean on

Reach out to others who have gone through what you are currently dealing with.

Lean on me
When you’re not strong
And I’ll be your friend
I’ll help you carry on…

It’s okay to show signs of weakness.

For it won’t be long
Till I’m gonna need somebody to lean on

We all need help at some point in life.

You just call on me brother
When you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on

Let friends know that you’re only a phone call away from help.

I just might have a problem that you’ll understand
We all need somebody to lean on

Look to a mentor for help in a time of need.

If there is a load you have to bear
That you can’t carry

Lean on Jesus, Matthew 11:28-30.

I’m right up the road
I’ll share your load
If you just call me

Don’t try to carry your burdens alone. Let others lighten your load.

Call me
If you need a friend
(call me)
Call me (call me)
If you need a friend
(call me)
If you ever need a friend
(call me)
Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me)

Friends are just a text or phone call away.

If you need a friend
(call me)
Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me)

Make yourself available for friends.

Final Thoughts:

My high school youth group taught me to lean on my friends. While I was raised Catholic, I started attending a Methodist youth group in the middle of my sophomore year. These students and leaders became like a second family to me. During one mission trip, I shared secret scars that I tried to carry on my own. These friendships led me into youth ministry and helped me understand the importance of leaning on Jesus on other people.

Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer

Inspiration Behind Livin’ on a Prayer:

This song reflects the economic realities of growing up at the bottom end of the middle class. While the characters Tommy and Gina within this song are fictional, the lyrics of Livin’ on a Prayer reflect life experiences of guitarist Richie Sambora. Richie’s Uncle Sal worked on the docks, struggling to make a living. However, the theme of Livin’ on a Prayer points to maintaining a Christian faith despite the struggles of living paycheck to paycheck.

Biblical Application:

“I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”“No,” they answered. 6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish, John 21:3-6.

Exegesis of Livin’ on a Prayer:

Once upon a time
Not so long ago

Using a common storyline opening to begin this song.

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union’s been on strike, he’s down on his luck
It’s tough
So tough

Tommy who in real life was Uncle Sal is unable to make any money due to the union strike.

Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man
She brings home her pay, for love
Mm, for love

Gina had to pick up extra shifts to make up the monthly difference of income.

She says, “We’ve gotta hold on to what we’ve got
It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not
We got each other, and that’s a lot for love
We’ll give it a shot”

These lyrics point a different era in America when married couples were taught to stay together to death do us part. Sure, the current sacrifices Gina had to make sucks, but they have each other for love and support.

Oh, we’re halfway there
Oh-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand, we’ll make it, I swear
Oh-oh, livin’ on a prayer

The halfway either point to halfway through the month or the Union strike. Living paycheck to paycheck sometimes requires lots of prayer.

Tommy’s got his six-string in hock
Now he’s holding in what he used to make it talk
So tough
Mm, it’s tough

Tommy needed to start selling some valuable possessions to avoid defaulting on their loan or rent.

Gina dreams of running away
She cries in the night, Tommy whispers
“Baby, it’s okay”
Someday

This couple has reached their breaking point, but Tommy provides leadership and hope.

We’ve gotta hold on to what we’ve got
It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not
We got each other, and that’s a lot for love
We’ll give it a shot

A call to stick together, rise above their current trial.

Oh, we’re halfway there
Oh-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand, we’ll make it, I swear
Oh-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Livin’ on a prayer

Praying with a sense of urgency.

Ooh, we gotta hold on, ready or not
You live for the fight when that’s all that you’ve got

Don’t give up hope. Keep the faith.

Whoa, we’re halfway there
Whoa-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand, and we’ll make it, I swear
Whoa-oh, livin’ on a prayer

In real life, Uncle Sal kept his family together through this financial crisis.

Whoa, we’re halfway there
Whoa-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it, I swear
Whoa-oh, livin’ on a prayer

During tough times, you need a leader like Sal, who believes they will survive.

Whoa, we’re halfway there
Whoa-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it, I swear
Whoa-oh

Leaders are willing take the hand of the doubting and press on with the faith to endure this current storm.

Final Thoughts:

Before attending a youth ministry trade school, I was living in my sister’s basement. I had 2 jobs and made $100 per month. Most of that went toward gas and food. From a financial standpoint, I was on the verge of being homeless. Yet, Christian friends and my faith got me through these times. I was living on a prayer and God provided for my needs.

Little Big Town – Tornado (Official Music Video)

Inspiration Behind Tornado:

Little Big Town uses tornado as a metaphor. Rather than build a song around a destructive force of nature, the lyrics illustrates what happens when a woman filled with anger and vengeance leaves her own destruction path on human souls. While the music video makes listeners expect to see a real tornado at any moment, this debris field leaves behind mental and spiritual scars from a disgruntled woman.

Biblical Application:

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many, Hebrews 12:14-15.

Exegesis of Tornado:

Thought you’ll change the weather
Start a little storm, make a little rain
But I’m gonna do one better
Have the sun until you pray

When someone is about to lose their composure, there are obvious signs like a raised voice, a change is emotions and venomous speech. Tornados have their own warning signs in the sky. Karen Fairplay wants to do one better with an odd play on words to end this opening stanza.

I’m a tornado looking for a soul to take
You’re gonna see me coming by the selfish things that you did
I’m gonna leave you guessing have this fun on this gonna hit I’m a tornado, looking for a man to break

Hurt people have a tendency to want to inflict the people who hurt them. This is the payback that is referred to.

Yeah, I’m gonna leave this house, spinning all around
Tossing in the air and playing in the ground
Make sure you’ll never found

Like the wrath from a twister, the angry brewing wants to leave a similar path of destruction.

Thought you’ll take the swing try another girl, try another night
But it’s not pain that brings my force of nature back to life
I’m a tornado, what’s done gotta left by

Sometimes human beings try to play God, seeking to payback the harm done to their soul.

Hey I’m gonna leave this house, spin it all around
Tossing in the air and put it in the ground
I’m gonna leave this house, spin it all around
Tossing in the air and put it in the groun
d
Make sure you’ll never find, oh yeah

This is what happens when you allow the root of bitterness to consume your soul.

Hey I’m gonna leave this house, spin it all around
Tossing in the air and put it in the ground
Yeah, I’m gonna leave this house, spin it all around
Tossing in the air and put it in the ground
Make sure you’ll never find

The lyrics suggest that she wants to bury her ex-boyfriend, sending a bad message,

The winds are getting stronger and the sky is falling through
You ain’t got much longer till the rage rips off the roof
I’m a tornado and I’m coming after you

When common sense is gone, anger and rage take over.

Final Thoughts:

The older I become; I try to be a peace maker. Yet, in my younger years, I had a short fuse, going off at a moment’s notice. My anger management issue took more than a decade to finally control. When you become open to letting Jesus come into your life, Romans 10:9-11, this transformation is possible, but it takes time.

Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head

Inspiration Behind Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head:

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head was inspired by the 1970 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote this song for the film. While the initial song was going to be for a romantic scene, the producer decided to go with a song that would highlight resilience and optimism to overcome difficult situations in life.

Biblical Application:

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go,” Joshua 1:7-9.

Exegesis of Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head:

Raindrops are falling on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothing seems to fit those raindrops
Are falling on my head
They keep falling
So I just did me some talking to the sun
And I said I didn’t like the way

When you are traveling via horseback, you’re exposed to the elements. While riding in the sun would be better, cowboys keep pressing on.

He got things done
He’s sleeping on the job
Those raindrops are falling on my head
They keep falling, but there’s one thing I know
The blues, they send to meet me
Won’t defeat me, it won’t be long
‘Til happiness steps up to greet me

The sun is accused of sleeping on the job. While a hat may keep you dry for a while, wet hats will keep you cold. Instead of setting up camp early, these cowboys keep riding, expecting the sun to eventually greet them.

Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Crying’s not for me, ’cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complaining
Because I’m free
Nothing’s worrying me

These cowboys were mentally tough. Complaining isn’t going to make the rain go away. Instead, Butch and the Sundance Kid keep going without a worry in the world.

It won’t be long
‘Til happiness steps up to greet me

The weather will change for the better any minute, so staying optimistic is important.

Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn’t mean my eyes
Will soon be turning red
Crying’s not for me ’cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complaining
Because I’m free
Nothing’s worrying me

Cowboys don’t let the weather influence their moods.

Final Thoughts:

Most of my camping experiences were as a member of the Boy Scouts. Over fifty percent of my trips were filled with pouring rain. The longest trip was a week up in Canada, canoeing in the chain of lakes. There were some nasty days, dealing with whitecaps and driving rain, yet surviving this week helped me appreciate the outdoors. As an adult, I prefer staying in hotels, but I don’t mind the occasional campfire on a clear summer night.

Kenny Chesney – Save It for a Rainy Day (Official Video)

Inspiration Behind Save It for a Rainy Day:

The vision for Save It for a Rainy Day appeared while Matthew Ramsey was in the shower. Matthew took this idea, shared it with Andrew Dorff and Brad Tursi who completed this song in less than an hour. Kenny Chesney was so impressed by Save It for a Rainy Day that this served as a wake-up song for Kenny and his fans on his album the Big Revival.

Biblical Application:

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened, Matthew 7:7-8.

Exegesis of Save it for a Rainy Day:

It’s no secret that lately there ain’t no escape
And that I’ve been waking up alone
Just me and the TV, and a sinking feeling
That you ain’t ever coming home

Kenny is going through a tough time in his life. Either his girlfriend or wife has left him.

But today, the tears ain’t gonna hit the floor
‘Cause the boat’s in the bay
And it’s calling my name
So I’m heading on out the door

Rather than stay home and sulk, being depressed, Kenny has a desire to go fishing.

‘Cause the sun’s too bright, the sky’s too blue
Beer’s too cold to be thinking about you
Gonna take this heartbreak and tuck it away
Save it for a rainy day

While the pain in Kenny’s heart is still there, he’s going to take advantage of this beautiful day, put this on hold for a rainy day.

When I turned the ignition, I knew I’d be missing
The feel of the wind on my face
I was stuck in a habit, wondering what happened
Two days of taking all the blame

While driving his boat out to his favorite spot, he starts to reflect about what went wrong.

Got a drink, or two
That’s as foolproof as what it will be
It’s a beautiful world with a beautiful girl
Kind of making eyes at me

After a few drinks, an attractive woman starts to look over at Kenny.

‘Cause the sun’s too bright, the sky’s too blue
Beer’s too cold to be thinking about you
Gonna take this heartbreak and tuck it away
Save it for a rainy day

Fishing is an excuse to stop thinking about what went wrong in the past.

Yeah, the music’s too good, my friends are all out
And they’re all too high to be bringing them down
If they ask about you, I’ve got nothing to say
I’ll save it for a rainy day

Kenny appears to be out with friends, possibly at a bar when others ask about his woman. Kenny plays it cool, changing the topic of conversation.

They’ll be plenty of time for ones and why’s
And how’d I let you get away
But the lying in bed all stuck in my head
Is just gonna have to wait

Sometimes you’ll have to wait for the real reasons a relationship didn’t work out. You can guess all you want, but it’s better to put these thoughts away for a rainy day.

‘Cause the sun’s too bright, the sky’s too blue
Beer’s too cold to be thinking about you
Gonna take this heartbreak and tuck it away
Save it for a rainy day

Healing takes time, but human beings need some sort of recreation to get their minds off the worries of this world.

Yeah, the music’s too good, my friends are all out
And they’re all too high to be bringing them down
If they ask about you, I’ve got nothing to say
I’ll save it for a rainy day

Kenny is not ready to talk about this yet.

Gonna take this heartbreak and tuck it away
Save it for a rainy day
Save it for a rainy day

Enjoy the weather while its nice. You can save contemplation for a rainy day.

Final Thoughts:

People grieve in different ways. Some enjoy being alone initially, others find comfort taking a walk with a friend and a few may seek distractions to get their mind off of their heart break. When I was in high school, I would go on long runs to clear my mind. In college, I took long walks with a friend or two. Kenny Chesney went fishing or that’s how this song was written. The next time you find yourself in a difficult situation, find something productive to do so that you’re not overwhelmed by a failed relationship.

Patti Labelle – New Attitude (1984)

Inspiration Behind New Attitude:

Patti Labelle was searching for a spark that would lead toward empowerment and personal transformation. This new outlook on life helped spawn the words to New Attitude. The lyrics of New Attitude conveys a journey of self-discovery and development of positive thinking. As minds change from I can’t toward a I can attitude, all things are in reach, God willing.

Biblical Application:

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline, 2 Timothy 1:6-7.

Exegesis of New Attitude:

Runnin’ hot, runnin’ cold
I was runnin’ into overload
It was extreme, ex-ex-ex-ex-ex-extreme
I took it so high, so low
So low, there was nowhere to go
Like a bad dream

Patti highlights the emotional roller coaster that life can be. Sometimes when you feel like you’re stuck, either in a job or relationship that is going nowhere, you need to change this situation or your mindset.

Somehow the wires uncrossed, the tables were turned
Never knew I had such a lesson to learn
I’m feelin’ good from my head to my shoes
Know where I’m goin’ and I know what to do
I tidied up my point of view
I got a new attitude
I’m in control, my worries are few
‘Cause I’ve got love like I never knew
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I got a new attitude

After waking up from a bad dream, Patti came to her senses. This pivotal moment completely transformed Patti’s life. This attitude focused on the positive aspects of life and minimized all of her previous concerns.

I’m wearing a new dress (New), new hair (New)
Brand new ideas, as a matter of fact I’ve changed for good
It must have been the cool night, new moon, new slight change
More than to figure, but I feel like I should, yes
Somehow the wires uncrossed, the tables were turned
Never knew I had such a lesson to learn

Instead of being stagnant, Patti is rejuvenated, walking around with confidence and a swagger. Rather than repeating the same mistake over and over again, Patti started learning from past failures.

I’m feelin’ good from my head to my shoes
Know where I’m goin’ and I know what to do
I tidied up my point of view
I got a new attitude
I’m in control, my worries are few
‘Cause I’ve got love like I never knew
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I got a new attitude

Either Patti learned to love herself for who she is or a new relationship has elevated her attitude to new heights.

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh… ooh…
Somehow the wires uncrossed, the tables were turned
Never knew I had such a lesson to learn
I’m feelin’ good from my head to my shoes
Know where I’m goin’ and I know what to do
I tidied up my point of view
I got a new attitude
I’m in control, my worries are few
‘Cause I’ve got love like I never knew
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I got a new attitude

This repetitive chorus suggests that Patti’s new attitude has become a lifestyle.

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I got a new attitude
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I got a new attitude
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I got a new attitude
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (Mmm)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (Mmm, mmm)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Patti is experiencing joy in life and loving it.

I got a new attitude
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (From my head to my shoes)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (I got a new)
I got a new attitude (I got a new)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (New attitude)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (Everything about has changed)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (Baby)
I got a new attitude (I got a new)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (I got a new)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (Feelin’, feelin’)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (I feel it, I got a new attitude)

Patti is walking around with a bounce in her step.

I got a new attitude
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (Oh… ooh…)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I got a new attitude (I got a new)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (Attitude)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (Said I got a new)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (New attitude)
I got a new attitude
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Sometimes all you need in life is a new attitude.

Final Thoughts:

For the first 15 years of my life, I was an emotional wreck. When I was happy, I could uplift everyone around me. When I was depressed, I made sure no one in my presence was having a good time. My new attitude came from asking Jesus to come into my life, Romans 10:9-11. While it took me years to straighten out parts of my life, I started listening to music with a positive message in college. This put my mind on the right track and slowly transformed me into the person that I have become. Although I’m far from perfect, I’m simply a work in progress, pursuing a positive attitude daily.
