Mr. Mister – Broken Wings (Official Video)

Inspiration Behind Broken Wings:

The title of this Mr. Mister song comes from Kahlil Gilbran’s 1912 novel The Broken Wings. The book tells the story of a doomed love facing society. between passion and constraint. The song Broken Wings uses metaphors from this novel as well as the band’s personal struggles at this time to craft this in 20 minutes. This collaboration between Frontman Ricard Page, lyricist John Lang and guitarist Steve George prepared the way for Broken Wings to become an instant classic.

Biblical Application:

Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s, Psalm 103:2-5.

Exegesis of Broken Wings:

Baby, don’t understand
Why we can’t just hold on
To each other’s hands

An attempt to salvage a relationship, asking why can’t we hold hands in public.

This time might be the last, I fear
Unless I make it all too clear
I need you so, oh-oh, oh

A man feels like he is losing this relationship, trying to intervene to save it.

Take these broken wings
And learn to fly again
Learn to live so free
When we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up and let us in
Take these broken wings

Broken wings could refer to a damaged person or lacking the energy that he once possessed.

Baby, I think tonight
We can take what was wrong
And make it right, mm

A desire to fix, mend and repair this relationship.

Baby, it’s all I know
That you’re half of the flesh
And blood that makes me whole
I need you so

This man can’t imagine his life without this woman.

So, take these broken wings
And learn to fly again
Learn to live so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up
And let us in, yeah, yeah
Let us in
Let us in

Asking for a chance at redemption. The book a love could refer to the Bible or novel the Broken Wings. This man wants the intimacy that he once shared with this woman.

Baby, it’s all I know
That you’re half of the flesh
And blood that makes me whole
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah

He doesn’t want any other woman. She is the one for him.

So, take these broken wings
And learn to fly again
Learn to live so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up and let us in

Take me back. Let me become the person I once was when we became a couple.

Take these broken wings
You’ve got to learn to fly
Learn to live and love so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up for us
And let us in, yeah, yeah

Yeah, yeah
Ooh

A final prayer to be welcomed back, given another chance and grow in love together.

Final Thoughts:

Prior to the 1600’s, once a household item was broken, it could not be fixed unless it was made out of metal or wood. However, the invention of glue helped repair items that were once thrown away. The invention of Duct Tape in 1942 added new life to cherished household items, even if this wasn’t perfectly glued or taped. Brokenness is an aspect of life that everyone can relate to, especially during mental health awareness month. The Bible illustrates human’s flaws in Romans 3:9-12. Yet, songs like Broken Wings provide a glimpse of hope for the broken-hearted. May the lyrics encourage you like they have blessed me for the past 30 plus years.

Blue Oyster Cult – (Don’t Fear) The Reaper (Lyrics)

Inspiration Behind the Reaper:

The front man for Blue Oyster Cult, Donald Roeser, wrote the Reaper at 28 after being diagnosed with heart arrhythmia. Donald used this life crisis as a way to confront his own mortality. Blue Oyster Cult wanted to create something more than a pop song in 1976, using Donald’s personal experience and literary influences to craft the lyrics to the Reaper. Tired of being just a top 40 band. Donald channeled his inner Jethro Tull to shape the sound of the Reaper.

Biblical Application:

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes, James 4:13-14.

Exegesis of the Reaper:

All our times have come
Here, but now they’re gone

Life flies by as time, clocks, keep ticking.

Seasons don’t fear the Reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun, or the rain
(We can be like they are) come on, baby
(Don’t fear the Reaper) baby, take my hand
(Don’t fear the Reaper) we’ll be able to fly
(Don’t fear the Reaper) baby, I’m your man

La, la-la-la-la
La, la-la-la-la

Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, the weather, isn’t influenced or impacted by the Reaper. However, the Reaper will use global crisis’s, national disasters, and severe storms to spread fear throughout mankind. Upon hearing his diagnosis, Donald didn’t want his medical condition to influence his relationship at this time.

Valentine is done
Here, but now they’re gone

Donald appears to reference St. Valentine who was martyred for trying to protect sacred marriage in his day. Valentine faced the Reaper, willing to die for his faith.

Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity (Romeo and Juliet)
Forty thousand men and women every day (like Romeo and Juliet)
Forty thousand men and women every day (redefine happiness)
Another forty thousand coming every day

In this stanza, Donald uses Shakespear to illustrate his point, willing to die if their parents didn’t let them marry. History is filled with countless individuals who couldn’t escape the Reaper.

(We can be like they are) come on, baby

Donald is trying to convince the love of his life to not be afraid.

(Don’t fear the Reaper) baby, take my hand
(Don’t fear the Reaper) we’ll be able to fly
(Don’t fear the Reaper) baby, I’m your man

We can make it if we stick together.

La, la-la-la-la
La, la-la-la-la

A subtle transition.

Love of two is one
Here, but now they’re gone

Perhaps a reference to the unity of a strong marriage as a couple becomes one.

Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn’t go on
The door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew and then disappeared
The curtains flew and then he appeared

A poetic stanza which highlights that human life is short, like a mist that suddenly disappears.

(Saying, “Don’t be afraid”) come on, baby
(And she had no fear) and she ran to him
(Then they started to fly) they looked backward and said goodbye
(She might become like they are) she had taken his hand
(She had become like they are) come on, baby
(Don’t fear the Reaper)

The last stanza serves as a final call to face your fears, stand together and live life to its fullest.

Final Thoughts:

The Reaper appeared in the 1978 horror film Halloween. However, it was one of the opening scenes in Stephen King’s The Stand which helped me appreciate the Reaper. The melody and lyrics combine to create a timeless classic. As someone who has faced a series of life altering events, my faith in Christ has removed most of my fear of dying. As a recent grandfather, there are several events that I would like to be around to witness, but only God knows when I will breathe my last breath.

Sheryl Crow – Soak Up The Sun

Inspiration Behind Soak Up the Sun:

Sheryl Crow and Jeff Trout were on a flight from Portland, Oregon to New York City. On this particular day, it was pouring upon takeoff and sunny when they arrived. This concept of soaking up the sun provided a dual meaning for Cheryl who was recovering from surgery at the time this song was created. The composition of the lyrics to Soak Up the Sun included a discussion on real life issues like the Columbine high school shooting. These current events led to themes of resilience and gratitude with Soak Up the Sun.

Biblical Application:

Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forevermore. From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised, Psalm 113:2-3.

Exegesis of Soak Up the Sun:

My friend the communist
Holds meetings in his RV
I can’t afford his gas
So I’m stuck here watching TV

Despite your political leanings and how this belief impacts local economies, a sunny day can bring different people together.

[Verse 2]
I don’t have digital
I don’t have diddly-squat
It’s not having what you want
It’s wanting what you’ve got

This stanza is about gratitude Instead of thinking about what other people have in life, be thankful for the blessings you do have in life.

[Chorus]
I’m gonna soak up the sun
I’m gonna tell everyone to lighten up
I’m gonna tell ’em that I’ve got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame, I’m lookin’ up

Use sunny days as to recreate. Leave any anxieties, concerns or worries at the front door as you Soak Up the Sun outside.

[Post-Chorus]
I’m gonna soak up the sun
I’m gonna soak up the sun

Seize any sunny days that the good Lord provides.

[Verse 3]
I’ve got a crummy job
It don’t pay near enough
To buy the things it’d take
To win me some of your love

Focusing on a stage in life where many people find themselves, not satisfied with their income or occupation. This impacts your social status and ability to attract others who make more money than you.

[Pre-Chorus]
Every time I turn around
I’m lookin’ up, you’re lookin’ down
Maybe something’s wrong with you
That makes you act the way you do

A powerful stanza about a reality in life. Everyone has a backstory which influences how you act and behave. Unless you get to know someone, you’ll never truly understand why they act the way that they do.

[Chorus]
I’m, I’m gonna soak up the sun
I’m gonna tell everyone to lighten up
I’m gonna tell ’em that I’ve got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame, I’m lookin’ up

The sun can be relaxing if you take your mind off of the stressful aspects in your life. This is the call to lighten up. The last 2 lines provides an important life lesson. Don’t blame others for your lack of progress or success in life. When you are having a bad day, go outside and soak up the sun.

[Bridge]
I’m gonna soak up the sun
While it’s still free
I’m gonna soak up the sun
Before it goes out on me

Having fun in the sun is still free unless you have to pay for beach parking or beach tags. Seize each sunny day.

[Verse 4]
Don’t have no master suite
But I’m still the king of me
You have a fancy ride, but baby
I’m the one who has the key

A stanza about wealth and perspectives as you go through life.

[Pre-Chorus]
Every time I turn around
I’m lookin’ up, you’re lookin’ down
Maybe something’s wrong with you
That makes you act the
way you do May I am crazy too

People are different and respond differently. One person may be soaking up the sun on a beach and the person next to them is focused on social media and texting. These differences conceived judgments that may be accurate or wrong.

[Chorus]
I’m gonna soak up the sun
I’m gonna tell everyone to lighten up
I’m gonna tell ’em that I’ve got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame, I’m lookin’ up
I’m gonna soak up the sun
I’m gonna tell everyone to lighten up (To lighten up)
I’m gonna tell ’em that I’ve got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame, I’m lookin’ up (I’m lookin’ up)

Let a sunny day serve as a form of healing. Don’t bring your personal baggage as a way to play the victim card. Take responsibility for your actions, lighten up and enjoy every summer day in your future.

[Outro]
I’m gonna soak up the sun
I got my 45 on
So I can rock on

Sheryl is pleased with the outcome of Soak up the Sun.

Final Thoughts:

Bringing politics into music has ruined my enjoyment of several artists and bands that I once adored in college. If these musicians would have simply saved their political views for debates and discussions with friends, people like me would be more into music. However, Soak Up the Sun provides an important life lesson if you are open minded. The next time you are out soaking up the sun, allow good weather to unite, not divide. Seek to find a common ground or things you share in common. This mindset and perspective would make this world a better place to live.

Katrina & The Waves – Walking On Sunshine (Official Music Video)

Inspiration Behind Walking on Sunshine:

Guitarist Kimberley Rew’s original idea for Walking on Sunshine was for this to be a ballad. However, after writing the lyrics, it was apparent that this fun song needed to be more up-tempo. The overriding theme for Walking on Sunshine is joy, passionate about the life you are about to live. You are not just walking, you are floating in the air, fueled by a beautiful day.

Biblical Application:

Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly[a] with your God, Micah 6:7-8.

Exegesis of Walking on Sunshine:

[Intro]
Ow
Mmm, yeah

Setting the tone with excitement and enthusiasm.

[Verse 1]
I used to think maybe you loved me, now, baby, I’m sure
And I just can’t wait ’til the day when you knock on my door
Now every time I go for the mailbox, I’ve gotta hold myself down
‘Cause I just can’t wait ’til you write me you’re coming around

Kimberley thought that someone she was interested in her loved her. She is waiting for him to ask her out, She is also waiting for a letter from him as well.

[Chorus]
Now I’m walking on sunshine, woah-oh
I’m walking on sunshine, woah-oh
I’m walking on sunshine, woah-oh
And don’t it feel good?
Hey, alright now
And don’t it feel good?
Hey, yeah

She is in a great mood, excited about the future while celebrating today.

[Verse 2]
I used to think maybe you loved me, now I know that it’s true
And I don’t want to spend my whole life just awaiting for you

Now, I don’t want you back for the weekend, not back for a day, ah-no-no
I said, baby, I just want you back, and I want you to stay, oh, yeah, now

The potential of this future relationship is boosting her morale.

[Chorus]
I’m walking on sunshine, woah-oh
I’m walking on sunshine, woah-oh
I’m walking on sunshine, woah-oh-oh
And don’t it feel good?
Hey, alright now
And don’t it feel good?
Yeah, oh, yeah, now
And don’t it feel good?

This chorus points to a positive state of mind.

[Bridge]
Walking on sunshine
Walking on sunshine
I feel alive, I feel a love
I feel a love that’s really real
I feel alive, I feel a love
I feel a love that’s really real
I’m on sunshine, baby, oh, oh, yeah
I’m on sunshine, baby, oh

She is on an emotional high with love on her mind,

[Chorus]
I’m walking on sunshine, woah-oh
I’m walking on sunshine, woah-oh
I’m walking on sunshine, woah-oh-oh
And don’t it feel good?
Hey, alright now
And don’t it feel good?

This repetitive chorus points to a positive state of mind, feeling great.

[Outro]
I’ll say it, I’ll say it, I’ll say it again now
And don’t it feel good?
Ho, yeah, now
And don’t it feel good?
Now don’t it, don’t it, don’t it, don’t it, don’t it
Don’t it feel good?
I’ll say it, I’ll say it, I’ll say it again now
And don’t it feel good?
Oh, don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t
And don’t it feel good?
Now tell me, tell me, tell me again now
And don’t it feel good?
Ho, yeah, now
And don’t it feel good?
Oh, don’t it feel good, don’t it feel good?
Now don’t it feel good?
Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah (And don’t it feel good?)
Oh, yeah-yeah-yeah
Oh, yeah, oh, yeah
Oh, yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah (And don’t it feel good?)
Oh, yeah-yeah
Oh, yeah-yeah (And don’t it feel good?)
Oh, yeah-yeah-yeah, woo (And don’t it feel good?)

This final stanza reminds me of a high school girl who is in love, telling all of our friends how great this guy is.

Final Thoughts:

I would live in die with sports and relationships in high school. When I was in love, I was the happiest boy in school. When I got dumped, this joy turned into misery. This emotional roller coaster sucked the joy out of my life. As I matured in college, I began to become even keel, trying to avoid getting my hopes up. Yet when you find the right person, I understand the excitement that Kimberley expresses in Walking on Sunshine,

The Rascals – A Beautiful Morning (Official Audio)

Inspiration Behind A Beautiful Morning:

The concept for A Beautiful Morning began with a specific focus. Starting each day with gratitude, hope and intention. The lyrics are filled with timeless philosophies and personal reflections designed to value each new day of the week. Core inspirations include new beginnings, nature’s beauty, human connection and inner motivation. Thoughts like these make every day a Beautiful Morning.

Biblical Application:

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here! – 2 Corinthians 5:16-17.

Exegesis of A Beautiful Morning:

It’s a beautiful morning, ah
I think I’ll go outside a while
And just smile
Just take in some clean, fresh air, boy

Having a beautiful morning is a state of mind, establishing a resolve to focus on the positive aspects of life.

Ain’t no sense in staying inside
If the weather’s fine and you’ve got the time
It’s your chance to wake up and plan another brand new day
Either way

This mindset is eager to seize each new day, making the most of the weather.

It’s a beautiful morning, ah
Each bird keeps singing his own song
So long
I’ve got to be on my way now

Looking for a reason to be thankful.

Ain’t no fun just hanging around
I’ve got to cover ground, you couldn’t keep me down
It just ain’t no good if the sun shines when you’re still inside
Shouldn’t hide, still inside, shouldn’t hide
Still inside, shouldn’t hide, still inside, oh, oh, oh

Progress, plans and passion prevent you from taking a day off. Action leads to results.

Ooh, ooh-ah-ah
Ooh, ooh-ah-ah

Agreeing that you need to go outside and seize each new day.

There will be children with robins and flowers
Sunshine caresses each new waking hour
Seems to me that people keep seeing more and more each day
Gotta say, lead the way, it’s okay, brand new day
Gotta say, it’s okay, brand new day, gotta say, lead the way, oh

Be a leader, make the most of each hour of sunlight and stay positive.

Ooh, ooh-ah-ah (oh, oh, oh)
Ooh, ooh-ah-ah (whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh)
Ooh, ooh-ah-ah (oh)
Ooh, ooh-ah-ah (oh, oh, oh)

There is no doubt as this will be a beautiful day.

Final Thoughts:

Positive people make homes, neighborhoods and schools a fun place to be. While this enthusiasm often wears off in adults, it doesn’t have to. When a leader sets a certain positive tone, others want to feed off of this energy. Developing a Beautiful Day mentality can transform a workplace into a great environment to be part of and join.

Electric Light Orchestra – Mr. Blue Sky (Official Video)

Inspiration Behind Mr. Blue Sky:

Jeff Lynne was in the Swiss Alps, staying in a chalet when the concept of Nr. Blue Sky came to him. The week prior to the sun appearing was a combination of dark clouds with a slight mist. Thinking the weather might not change, a clear and sunny blue sky was a refreshing sight for Jeff. This instant change in weather transformed Jeff’s creativity, writing an additional 13 songs in rapid succession.

Biblical Application:

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse, Romans 1:20.

Exegesis of Mr. Blue Sky:

Morning! Today’s forecast calls for blue skies

A sudden change in the weather calls for a celebration.

The sun is shining in the sky
There ain’t a cloud in sight
It’s stopped raining
Everybody’s in the play
And don’t you know, it’s a beautiful new day
Hey, hey, hey!

A song highlighting a beautiful day. After days of rain, locals are coming out of their homes to enjoy this day.

Running down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly in the city
All the streets where once was pity
Mr. Blue Sky is living here today!
Hey, hey, hey!

A glimpse of Spring has uplifted the spirits of the people living in the Alps. A sunny day made a huge difference in Jeff’s attitude about visiting Switzerland.

Mr. Blue Sky
Please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Mr. Blue Sky
Please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?

Jeff suggests that bad weather may serve as punishment for something done in the past. Meanwhile, Jeff treats the sun like a person, asking questions about why he has been gone for so long. Was it our fault?

Hey, you with the pretty face
Welcome to the human race!
A celebration
Mr. Blue Sky’s up there waiting
And today is the day we’ve waited for
Ah, ah, ah

Jeff sees the sunshine on a pretty face, This calls for a celebration, what Jeff has been waiting to see.

Oh, Mr. Blue Sky
Please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Hey there Mr. Blue!
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around, see what you do
Everybody smiles at you

Weather affects how people act. Long winters or extended days of clouds and rain wear on a human’s psyche. Yet when the weather improves, allowing individuals to go outside, people tend to be happier.

Hey there Mr. Blue!
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around, see what you do
Everybody smiles at you!

A repetitive chorus reminds Jeff of the sun’s impact of people’s moods.

Mr. Blue Sky
Mr. Blue Sky
Mr. Blue Sky

Human beings often love sunny days.

Mr. Blue, you did it right
But soon comes Mr. Night
Creeping over, now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind, I’ll remember you this
I’ll remember you this way!

This day is coming to an end. As the sun is about to set behind the mountains, darkness replaces Mr. Blue with Mr, Night.

Mr. Blue Sky
Please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Hey there Mr. Blue (sky)
We’re so pleased to be with you (sky)
Look around see what you do (blue)
Everybody smiles at you

Jeff uses logic and reason, hoping for another sunny day tomorrow.

Please turn me over

Either a reference to tanning or wanting another visit from Mr. Blue Sky in the morning.

Final Thoughts:

During my last 2 years of living in Delaware before moving to South Carolina, Newark had become the Seattle of the East Coast, raining almost every Saturday for over a month. This bad weather made it easy to leave, without many reasons to stay. As families make plans to travel this summer, the weather will shape how much you like or disliked an area. This is what Mr. Blue Sky helped remind me.

Tommy James and the Shondells – Crimson & Clover

Inspiration Behind Crimson and Clover:

Tommy James woke up one morning thinking about his favorite color and flower. Upon combining crimson with clover, Tommy used poetry to blend these 2 elements together. Crimson and Clover contain themes of love and passion, fueled by deep emotions and natural beauty. While the remake of Crimson and Clover by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in 1982 received more attention in the music world, Tommy James and the Shondells crafted this song.

Biblical Application:

The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” – Isaiah 40:7-8

Exegesis of Crimson and Clover:

Ah, now I don’t hardly know her
But I think I can love her
Crimson and clover

The poetry portion of this song kept the lyrics to 4 stanzas. However, the actual song repeats these stanzas several times. From afar, Crimson and Clover are compared to a woman. The more you stare, there is a belief that you can love this woman.

Ah, now when she comes walkin’ over
Now I’ve been waitin’ to show her
Crimson and clover
Over and over

As this woman approaches, you have been waiting to show her something, a red flower and some clovers.

Yeah, if I’m not such a sweet thing
I wanna do everything
What a beautiful feelin’
Crimson and clover
Over and over

This man reveals his flaw but is eager to do whatever it takes to impress her. Perhaps there is a sexual innuendo behind crimson and clover.

Crimson and clover, over and over
Crimson and clover, over and over
Crimson and clover, over and over
Crimson and clover, over and ove

Either this is simply Tommy jamming to his favorite color and flower or the over and over has some sort of infatuation built into the lyrics. The more you gaze upon this natural beauty or a specific woman, the greater your attraction becomes.

Final Thoughts:

As someone who went to college to study golf course design and maintenance, I am big into flowers and fauna. As I build a 9-hole disc golf course on my property, I love adding elements of ornamental grasses, shrubs and wildflowers. Although this property is void of crimson at the present, when the flowers start to blossom this spring, there will be some crimson and random patches of clover to pop up. To me Crimson and Clover are part of this color spectrum, brightening up landscapes across the country.

Ashley Monroe – Like a Rose [Lyric Video]

Inspiration Behind Like a Rose:

Ashley Monroe reflects upon how the death of her father at a young age impacted her life and family. Like a Rose was co-written by Guy Clark and Jon Randall conveying Ashley’s journey from hardship to resilience. One of the themes of Like a Rose is that despite Ashley’s world falling apart around her, somehow God enabled her to turn out like a rose.

Biblical Application:

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[j] 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[k] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord, Romans 8:35-39.

Exegesis of Like a Rose:

I was onlu 13 when daddy died
Mama started drinking and my brother just quit trying
I’m still bouncing back, heaven only knows
How I came out like a rose

Ashley was a teenager when her father passed away. Her mom tried to numb this pain by drinking and her brother stopped trying. Yet Ashley kept bouncing back like a thriving rose bush.

Ran off with what’s his name when I turned 18
Got me out of North Dakota, but it did not change a thing
I left it in the yard, all covered up with snow
And I came out like a rose

Leaving didn’t make the pain of her father’s death go away. Seems like Ashley left behind a special plant or bush that thrived in her absence.

Sitting in this diner with a coffee in my hand
Waiting on a bus to some promise land
I got a one way ticket as far as it goes
And I came out like a rose

Ashley went years without having a home. Desperate this lonely journey, God took care of Ashley.

So I’m headed south to anywhere that ain’t so damn cold
Where I can warm my heart and shake the chills from my bones
It took a while to get here, it’s been a long hard road
And I came out like a rose

Ashley finally decided to leave the cold of the north for a warm state in the south. While this move took longer than expected, Ashley’s life was still blessed.

Sitting in this diner with a coffee in my hand
Waiting on a bus to some promise land
I got a one way ticket as far as it goes
And I came out like a rose

This chorus suggests that God is in control despite how bad the present may seem.

It took a while to get here, it’s been a long hard road
And I came out like a rose

Although this journey has been long and hard, Ashley feels blessed like a flourishing rose.

Final Thoughts:

As a manager with Amazon, I’ve learned that everyone has a story that explains how they have turned out and why they act the way that they do. The hard part is taking the time to peel back the layers which help you understand individuals like Ashley. If you have the patience, you’ll be able to find the best way to reach this individual. While you won’t reach everyone, you will find common ground to help rebuild crushed spirits and hurting souls.

The Outfield – Your Love (Official HD Video)

Inspiration Behind Your Love:

The Outfield had the unique ability to craft songs that resonated with a teenage audience. Guitarist John Spinks wrote Your Love in 20 minutes. John sought to capture the essence of longing and desire within a teen who is in love. Although the lyrics of Your Love are vague in certain portions, there is a sense of urgency to act upon your feelings. Your Love is one of the hit songs from the Outfield’s album Play Deep, suggesting don’t let anything get over your head.

Biblical Application:

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other, Galatians 5:13-15.

Exegesis of Your Love:

Josie’s on a vacation far away
Come around and talk it over
So many things that I want to say
You know I like my girls a little bit older?

The lyrics start with a couple separated by distance. Thoughts are racing with a comment about dating older girls.

I just want to use your love tonight
I don’t want to lose your love tonight

The initial portion of this chorus is selfish and then turns to a fear of losing this love.

I ain’t got many friends left to talk to
Nowhere to run when I’m in trouble
You know I’d do anything for you
Stay the night but keep it under cover

This relationship has left this boy without many friends to talk to. There’s a comment about commitment and offer to spend the night, keeping this confidential.

I just want to use your love tonight, whoa
I don’t want to lose your love tonight

There is a sense of urgency to take advantage of this moment together.

Try to stop my hands from shaking
But something in my mind’s not making sense
It’s been a while since we were all alone
But I can’t hide the way I’m feeling

The awkwardness between two teenagers. There is a sense of excitement, confusion and uncertainty.

As you’re leaving, please would you close the door?
And don’t forget what I told you
Just ’cause you’re right, that don’t mean I’m wrong
Another shoulder to cry upon

There is an agreement to keep this one night together secret. There is a disagreement, but an future offer to have a shoulder to lean on in times of need.

I just want to use your love tonight, yeah
I don’t want to lose your love tonight, yeah
I just want to use your love tonight
I don’t want to lose your love tonight
I just want to use your love tonight
I don’t want to lose your love tonight

This extended chorus is like a call to seize this moment together.

Use your love, lose your love (your love), use your love
(I don’t wanna lose) lose your, tonight
(I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna lose)
Lose your, tonight (your love)
Lose your, tonight (your love, your love, ah)
Lose your, tonight (your love)
I don’t want to lose your love tonight
(Your love) use your, tonight

There is a degree of second guessing, unsure if this is the right thing to do.

Final Thoughts:

This song serves as a reminder that distance makes the heart grow fonder. Unfortunately, when you are a young teenager, temptation leads human beings into making bad choices. When you have friends that hold you accountable, you’ll have a better chance from escaping temptation, 1 Corinthians 10:13. The key is keeping in step with the Holy Spirit, Galatians 5:25, by fleeing the passions of your flesh.

The Message Behind the Music-May 7

Geoff Moore and the Distance Home Run with Lyrics

Inspiration Behind Home Run:

This song combines Geoff’s passion for sports with the daily grind of life, influenced by the spiritual war going on behind the scenes detailed in Ephesians 6:12. The lyrics point to a repentant player serving as a narrative who looks back at missed opportunities in his life. Using baseball as a playing field, life is filled with tension as individuals pursue success while risking failure. As C.S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity, “success is the process of arriving.” Subsequently, life is a journey where a home run is the goal, but you have to be thankful for the singles and doubles in life before you develop the power for greater things.

Biblical Application:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms, Ephesians 6:10-12.

Exegesis of Home Run:

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Dan Brock Memorial Stadium
Are you ready for an afternoon of baseball?
I hope you are
Because it’s Geoff Moore and The Distance
Going up against the big guy, the Prince of Darkness(Darkness)
It’s been quiet on evolution with Geoff Moore and The Distance
That’s why it’s brought them to the game today
So I want you to kick back and enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of Baseball(Baseball)
The teams are assembled
Are you ready?

Like a WWE wrestling match, a Christian band faces the Prince of Darkness, the Undertaker.

PLAY BALL!!

Once you wake up each morning, the action never stops as you can’t call time up in life as time keeps ticking.

The lights go on
Another game day
I grabbed my bat
And headed for the plate
But the first pitch was a curve
And I was done!

This is what is called pitching backwards in baseball, starting a batter out with a pitch usually used for a strikeout pitch.

(umpire) STRIKE ONE!

The Devil maybe somewhat predicable but will throw you a curve from time to time to keep you guessing in life.

I stepped out of the box
Looked the pitcher in the eye
You could read his lips
“Hey, punk, you’re mine!”
So I gave him a wink and said
“Let’s see what you can do”

A glimpse of the mental portion of baseball, the game within a game.

(umpire) STRIKE TWO!

Taking pitches in baseball allows you to see what a given strike zone will be by an umpire.

Gotta keep my eye on the ball
Swing straight and true and follow through
Don’t be afraid, what-ever the call!
Because we’re never alone
Our coach is there to cheer us on
Well, it’s the wind-up
Here comes that ball
You gotta pray and swing
Watch it till, it’s goin, goin, it’s gone!

Basic hitting fundamentals fill this stanza. While baseball is a game a failure, getting out more than hits, you have to keep your head in a game. The moment doubt creeps into your mind, you’ll get yourself out before stepping up to the plate.

Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, we need a home run

Large scoreboards at stadiums will always let a team know what they need to do in order to win a game.

Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, we need a home run!

A repetitive chorus could refer to chatter in a dugout during a rally.

You know life can be
Like a baseball game
We’re on the same team
But were not all the same
That’s why we’ve got to learn
To play together

There are too many ME players on a team, self-absorbed and only concerned with themselves. Sometimes you have to lose bad so everyone can get on the same page.

I didn’t join this team to sit on the bench
I’m goin deep, swingin’ for the fence
I got some friends on base, I gotta get home!

Reminds me of the saying, “ducks on a pond,” wanting to come through for your team.

Gotta keep your eye on the ball
Swing straight and true, and follow through
Don’t be afraid, what-ever the call
Because we’re never alone
Our coach is there to cheer us on

Sometimes you have to go back to basic fundamentals in life before you can be successful.

Well it’s the wind-up
Here comes that ball
You gotta pray and swing
Watch it till it’s goin goin, it’s gone!

For confident players, hitting a baseball comes naturally. Yet for the doubters struggling to hit, you need prayer and good technique to break out of a slump.

Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, home run!
I want a home run

Visualization can help a batter.

Ho, ohho, ohh, oh
Ho, ohho, ohh, oh
Ho, ohho, i want a home run!

Confidence and visualization can lead to big hits.

We are not the first to play this game
Or stand over this plate
We are surrounded by the legacy
I can see them in the stands
I can see them wavin their hands
Sayin, “go, go all the way!”

Geoff is referring to the Bible Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11. Learn from their example.

(umpire) it’s goin, it’s going it’s going
Oh my!
It’s outta here!
That baby is gone (gone)

Come on now

Typically, an umpire will only make this call for homeruns down the lines.

Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, home run

While you don’t need a homerun to score, most major league teams are too reliant on homeruns.

Hey it’s gone,gone now

Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, home run

Hey it’s a homerun

This repetitive chorus echoes the excitement of hometown fans after a homerun.

Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, oh
Oh, ohho, ohh, home run

Since not everyone has the power for a homerun, enjoy every time you get on base.

Final Thoughts:

Decades ago, ESPN ran a series of commercials entitled Chicks Dig the Long Ball. This successful advertisement inspired baseball players to swing for the fences. While homeruns did increase, strikeouts rose as well. This is the age of baseball where players swing for the fences but usually strikeout. This is not the game that I grew up playing where speed could get you on base and eventually home, manufacturing the game winning run. Maybe this style of baseball will return. Yet for now, the home run reigns.
