The Message Behind the Music-October 11

Eagles – Hotel California (Live 1977) (Official Video) [HD]

Inspiration Behind Hotel California:

This song was inspired by observations from the Eagles in the 1970s of the Los Angeles culture and music industry’s excesses. The title Hotel California is a metaphor for the allure and dark underbelly of the American Dream. The music to Hotel California was written by Don Felder with the lyrics co-written by Glenn Fry and Don Henley. Hotel California reflects the hedonistic and materialistic side of the music industry witnessed by the Eagles.

Biblical Application:

For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing, 1 Thessalonians 5:8-11.

Exegesis of Hotel California:

[Verse 1]
On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Rising up through the air

Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light

My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night

A road outside of Los Angeles. Perhaps driving in a convertible/with your windows down, approaching LA. Despite seeing the city, this person is too tired to keep driving through the night, stopping to get some sleep.

[Verse 2]
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinkin’ to myself
“This could be Heaven or this could be Hell”

Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way

There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

The hostess at the hotel. Perhaps, a sketchy place, creating uncertainty. Using candles to lead him to his room. The murmurs of voices, trying to figure out what they are saying.

[Chorus]
“Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face

Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
You can find it here” can find it here”

Perhaps a lounge where people gather. A lovely place with friendly faces. There is always vacancies here, anytime of year. This is where the band likes to stay when in town.

[Verse 3]
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted
She got the Mercedes Benz, uh
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat

Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget

A woman likely recovering from a broken relationship. Using her car as a status symbol. Several young boys are interested in her. She dances, likely a slow dance, trying to forget or remember a special person.

[Verse 4]
So I called up the Captain
“Please bring me my wine”
He said, “We haven’t had that spirit here
Since 1969″

And still those voices are callin’
From far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Sitting at a bar, asking the bartender for a drink. Unfortunately, the selection is limited. Either this hotel is haunted or a group of people are gathered in one room as their voices can be heard through the walls.

[Chorus]
“Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face

They livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (What a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis”

Perhaps the Hotel California are members of the music industry who are nice to you at first, knowing they are going to make a lot of money from you.

[Verse 3]
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted
She got the Mercedes Benz, uh
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat

Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget

This stanza is repeated. A flashy woman who is surrounded by wealth but lacks substance in her life.

[Verse 4]
So I called up the Captain
“Please bring me my wine”
He said, “We haven’t had that spirit here
Since 1969″

And still those voices are callin’
From far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Using alcohol to drown his sorrows. While trying to go to sleep, spirits and or voices wake him up.

[Chorus]
“Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face

They livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (What a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis”

Sometimes a welcome has alternative motives. Without naming names, the Eagles use symbolism to express their disappointment in the music industry.

Final Thoughts:

Over the years, I heard various theories about the meaning of Hotel California. However, after reading about the context of Hotel California, I like the metaphors used in the lyrics. Perhaps the voices are symbolic of gossip, rumors and empty promises from music executives. When a band like the Eagles has a specific request like a bottle of wine, this is no longer offered. There are numerous documentaries like Tom Petty who exposed the corrupt contracts that bands are forced to adhere to, even if it means losing money.
