Tears For Fears – Everybody Wants To Rule The World (Official Music Video)
Inspiration Behind Everybody Wants to Rule the World:
Tears for Fears were trying to figure out what the America music industry was looking for. This quest coincided with a cultural observation and political conversation. Tears for Fears tried to emulate the Boys of Summer by Don Henley which at the time was radio friendly. Everybody Wants to Rule the World examined the struggle for power, the Cold War and the Berlin Wall. These references set the stage for one of Tears for Fears greatest hits.
Biblical Application:
As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains, Matthew 24:4-8.
Exegesis of Everybody Wants to Rule the World:
Welcome to your life
There’s no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you
An interesting play on words, suggesting that even when you stop to rest, the world doesn’t stop and the government/officials will find you.
Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on Mother Nature
Everybody wants to rule the world
There is a battle for control. You can control yourself, but not the weather or individuals who are hungry for power.
It’s my own design
It’s my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the
What goes on within the decision-making process.
Most of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world
Freedoms come and go depending upon who is in control of your country.
There’s a room where the light won’t find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do, I’ll be right behind you
A reference to the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War.
So glad we’ve almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world
Progress always comes with compromise. This give and take may make you less free than you were the day before.
I can’t stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the –
Say that you’ll never, never, never, never need it
One headline, why believe it?
Everybody wants to rule the world
The powers at the present are working behind the scenes to control the narrative. As this fight for control only intensifies, headlines that you read and see in the news will be deceiving.
All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world
Political sides win and lose as control is handed off to new leaders, struggling for ultimate control.
Final Thoughts:
There is a saying in politics, “never let a crisis or emergency be wasted.” Immediately after the Coronavirus was announced, state and local governments decided what was safe and what wasn’t. A few businesses were allowed to open while others had their doors shut for good. This abuse of power fits into the theme of Everybody Wants to Rule the World. Hopefully, if there is a next time, citizens won’t be as gullible and begin to ask critical questions to their leaders. If it means being cancelled, so be it as long as the search for the truth prevails in the end.
