Inspiration Behind Smooth Operator:

The goal for the musical construction of Smooth Operator contained 2 essential elements. First, create the ideal mix of jazz, soul and R & B. Second, to present a melody where a concise story could be told. Sade Adu and Raymond St. John co-wrote Smooth Operator while members of the band Pride. This song about a con man, able to persuade anyone in his spheres of influence put Sade on the map as an up-and-coming female artist.

Biblical Application:

Enemies disguise themselves with their lips, but in their hearts, they harbor deceit.
25 Though their speech is charming, do not believe them, for seven abominations fill their hearts.
26 Their malice may be concealed by deception, but their wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

He’s laughing with another girl

From afar, charm is one of those qualities that is easy to distinguish. Yet when you are the one being swayed by a smooth operator, you want to believe that this is genuine.

This kind of smooth operator makes for a great character in a series like Castle or the Pierce Brosnan character in the Thomas Crown Affair. Not matter how much women are warned about their reputation, they fall in love anyone.

Since I could barely speak as a former stutterer, I was never a smooth operator. Yet when fame, fortune or success comes your way, make sure that you stay grounded in humility. Or else you’ll get carried away with flattery, and perhaps start following the path of a smooth operator.

Maren Morris – My Church (Official Music Video)

Inspiration Behind My Church:

Maren Morris composed a song to highlight the impact that music has had on her life. As a musician who is traveling from one stop to the next, going to the same church week after week isn’t an option. Subsequently, when Maren is on the road she turns to country music to help her pass the time. Over the years, this FM station playing her favorite songs has become her home church.

Biblical Application:

Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch, Acts 11:25-26.

Exegesis of My Church:

I’ve cursed on a Sunday, I’ve cheated and I’ve lied
I’ve fallen down from grace a few too many times
But I find holy redemption when I put this car in drive
Roll the windows down and turn up the dial

Conviction, guilt and the need for redemption is what leads many people to church. However, when your career or job forces you to work on Sunday, you have to be creative like Maren. While driving nearby or traveling on the road, Maren’s favorite FM station provided the spiritual boost to get through another day.

Not all music is good for your heart, soul and mind. Yet when your commit yourself to listening to uplifting music, God can speak to you. Sometimes you may get so pumped up from a song it’s like being filled with the Holy Spirit. This is what Maren is experiencing as she drives as music plays.

When Hank brings the sermon and Cash leads the choir
It gets my cold, cold heart burnin’ hotter than a ring of fire
When this wonderful world gets heavy and I need to find my escape
I just keep the wheels rollin’, radio scrollin’, ’til my sins wash away

Maren escapes to her favorite artists and songs to ignite her soul. When the headline news stories get too depressing, Maren retreats to her favorite FM dial for encouragement and hope.

Maren sings about how music soothes the souls like the relief King Saul experienced upon hearing David play his harp.

Music provides a daily spark for Maren, giving her the strength to carry on.

While nothing can replace the individuals who make up a church, the messages that Maren has heard over the years from country music on FM dials has become like a church to her.

Final Thoughts:

Back in my teaching days, I taught a class to 11th graders using Mere Christianity as the main textbook. The final unit of this class was based upon building a modern church to meet the needs of our culture. Instead of boring students with theology, teenagers used Book 4 of Mere Christianity to shape their Christian beliefs. This unit was a simulation where each stage was a building block. Beginning with a name and mission’s statement, ideas were presented to the class and voted upon with secret ballots. The catch was you couldn’t vote for your own church. The top 3 churches received points which eventually turned into members to help form an annual budget. This month-long project provided some amazing concepts, preparing students to select the type of church they wanted to join after graduating. As society evolves, the church needs to be on the cutting edge of societal evolution without compromising the integrity of the Bible. This is the church I’m longing to find.

Inspiration Behind I Hope You Dance:

I Hope You Dance was conceived from a moving experience between Tia Siller and her sick mother. Tia’s mother provided an inspirational message before departing, ” I hope you dance.” Tia’s mom wanted her to take a chance, by living life to its fullest. Upon completing this song, Lee Ann Womack debuted I Hope You Dance on an episode of Extreme Hope Makeover Edition after a needy family was given a new home to live in.

Biblical Application:

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full, John 10:9-10.

Exegesis pf I Hope You Dance:

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty-handed

The opening stanza is a call for Carpe Diem, seize the day. Maintain your passion for life, never take anything for granted and take time to love others.

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

Enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. Stay optimistic when dreams and goals don’t happen right away. Give faith a fighting chance so you’ll be ready to dance when the opportunity arises.

This song brought tears to my eyes when I first heard it on ABC as part of the Extreme Home Makeover Edition. Between the daily news cycle and social media, this world has become consumed with dwelling on what’s wrong, who is to blame and why we should hate them. I Hope You Dance serves as a welcomed change, calling listeners to make the most of their life. Instead of playing the victim card, stop living in the past so that you can start living the abundant life that God has designed for you.

The Message Behind the Music-March 13

Inspiration Behind There Was Jesus:

Zach Williams wrote There Was Jesus reflecting upon his struggles with addiction and a failing marriage. Before recording this song, Zach sought Dolly Parton’s advice. This led to a joint collaboration of these two, with Dolly wanting to make sure that her part in this duet fit perfectly into There Was Jesus’ theme of faith and redemption.

Biblical Application:

To the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, Ephesians 1:6-8.

Exegesis of There Was Jesus:

Every time I tried to make it on my own
Every time I tried to stand and start to fall
And all those lonely roads that I have travelled on
There was Jesus

This opening stanza reminds me of the Christian poem entitled Footprints where an individual going through tough times on earth thinks God abandoned him until looking down and seeing two sets of footprints in the sand. Jesus was right there all the time, walking side by side. This is what Zach realized as well.

When the life I built came crashing to the ground
When the friends I had were nowhere to be found
I couldn’t see it then but I can see it now

Experiencing disappointment, failure and rejection can be a lonely period. When Zach was going through the difficult trials in his life, he didn’t sense or see God’s presence at the time. Looking back now, Jesus was there.

Every minute, every moment
Where I’ve been and where I’m going
Even when I didn’t know it or couldn’t see it
There was Jesus

God gives all human beings free will, to choose as we please daily. Each choice leads to blessing or curses according to Moses in Deuteronomy 28. According to Zach, waiting for answers and being healed was excruciating. Despite being helpless and losing hope, Jesus was by his side.

For this man who needs amazing kind of grace (mm)
For forgiveness at a price I couldn’t pay (mm)
I’m not perfect so I thank God every day
There was Jesus (there was Jesus)

Zach is bearing his soul, reaching out to God for grace and mercy. Jesus was listening.

This chorus serves as a reminder that healing occurs in God’s timing, not yours.

Sometimes human beings are so busy and pressed to get their job done, that they forget to slow down, be still and notice the presence of Jesus in and around their life.

Zach and Dolly speak of God’s omnipresence. This stanza also highlights God’s providence.

To those who invite Jesus in, Romans 10:9-11, He will abide and walk with you.

Final Thoughts:

Revelation 3:20 provides one of the most fascinating images in the Bible. John writes about a door with only one handle, on our side of the door. While God continues to knock on the door of our heart, only we can let Jesus in. This is what Zach realized after writing There Was There. All human beings need to do is open this door for God to comw into your life.

The Message Behind the Music-March 11

Inspiration Behind Jesus Take the Wheel:

Carrie Underwood’s song Jesus Take the Wheel was inspired by a childhood memory shared by Gordie Sampson. Gordie recalls a true story about a mom on the verge of experiencing a car accident, crying out to Jesus for help. This moment of complete surrender resonates with individuals seeking divine intervention. Sometimes when your life is spiraling out of control, trusting in a higher power via faith is a last resort, hoping to escape death.

Biblical Application:

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. 18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit, Psalm 34:17-18.

Exegesis of Jesus Take the Wheel:

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati on a snow-white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her mama and her daddy with the baby in the backseat
50 miles to go, and she was running low on faith and gasoline
It’d been a long, hard year

Driving long distances can take a toll on my mind, especially if the weather is bad. This woman appears to be a single mom, recently divorced based upon the hard year comment.

She had a lot on her mind, and she didn’t pay attention
She was going way too fast
Before she knew it, she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn’t even have time to cry
She was so scared
She threw her hands up in the air

Going over bridges while driving in the snow can be difficult. After the fear of driving in the snow vanished, she started driving as if the roads were dry. This lapse in judgement almost led to a car accident. Once a car starts sliding, you’re at the mercy of physics. Losing physical control of her car, she cried out for help.

Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
‘Cause I can’t do this on my own
I’m letting go
So give me one more chance
And save me from this road I’m on
Jesus, take the wheel

Helpless and scared, she cries out to Jesus for divine intervention. Asking God for a second chance at life.

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat, sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said, “I’m sorry for the way I’ve been living my life
I know I’ve got to change, so from now on tonight”

Human nature has a way of leading people toward self-reliance until life altering events happen. This is where Jesus becomes a last resort, turning to God in times of trouble.

This chorus reinforces the notion that there are moments in life where it’s clear that you can’t do it or make it on your own.

Despite the disobedience of mankind, Jesus continues to offer desperate human beings second and third chances at life.

The more Christians truly surrender to God, the more Jesus can shine through your life.

Final Thoughts:

I was in a head on collision in college. I could see it happening but had no control. I escaped with banged up knees and a totaled car. While cars can be replaced, human life cannot. Subsequently, make sure you thank Jesus for what you have and for the numerously times in life divine intervention kept you out of an accident.

Inspiration Behind For Those Who Wait:

The music video of For Those Who Wait contains a talented musician seeking to turn a high school passion into a career. The lyrics serve as an anthem for individuals experiencing the emotional anguish of waiting and uncertainty. The longer this period in life continues, the harder it becomes to believe that your lifelong dream is worth pursuing. This is where faith, patience and perseverance are necessary to fight through personal doubts until dreams come true.

Biblical Application:

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers, Galatians 6:9-10.

Exegesis of For Those Who Wait:

This is for those who wait!

A song dedicated to individuals waiting to fulfill dreams and goals in life.

Another day another waiting game
A little different but it’s still the same

I want to hope but sometimes i just don’t know

Waiting in anticipation for a desired outcome can be excruciating. One day signs can point toward success while others are filled with rock blocks and failure. Fireflight is looking to find their place in life as their hearts search for a place to call home.

Another day has come and gone without knowing. Going to sleep with a song and a prayer for you heart to be set on fire with a passion to never give up hope.

Seeking freedom to know you are on the right track. Struggling to believe that you were born to fulfill a specific purpose in life. You want to see progress, but you need more time.

Continuing on this journey alone was too much to bear. Subsequently, the violinist turns to God for help. Instead of worrying herself to death, she yields total control over to God, “Jesus take the wheel.”

Another day without any news. progress or updates pass. Yet God is holding her together, replacing personal doubts with belief to carry on.

If your live is full of success, you’ll likely start resting on past loreals. However, if you truly want something, failures and setbacks are only going to inspire you more to keep pressing forward toward your dream.

Final Thoughts:

When God becomes part of your life, hungry Christians won’t stop searching and trying until they discover God’s will for their lives, Romans 12:1-2. The violinist in the music video didn’t let her father’s objections stop her from chasing after her dream. When a mentor entered her life, she regained the confidence to face her fears by pursuing a music scholarship in college.

The Message Behind the Music-March 7

Inspiration Behind Can’t Live Without:

This song was inspired by Hollyn’s search for divine love. Unfortunately, this invisible force comes and goes like the wind. As Hollyn struggles to find clarity and direction in life, she realizes that she can’t live without God. Despite being a contestant on American Idol season 12, Hollyn has remained grounded in her faith as she searches for a spiritual connection with God.

Biblical Application:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me, John 15:1-4.

Exegesis of Can’t Live Without:

California drivin’ had to get out
Distance got me wonderin’ where you are right now
One-way conversations got me worn down
Pouring out my heart wish you would speak a sound

Hollyn appears to reach a breaking point due to the traffic in California. Hollyn feels lost without a nearby support group or family. The people she does see on a regular basis are so self-absorbed that she is ready for a change. These are the circumstances which led her to reach out to God for help.

Perhaps Hollyn is referencing the words of one of Jesus; disciples in 2 Peter 1:3-4. Missing the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Hollyn appears to be overanalyzing her day. Instead of focusing on the positive, she is beating herself up internally, filled with regret. During these sleepless nights, she is asking God for help in prayer.

Yet, when you come to your senses, no longer under the chains of addiction or depression, restoration is made possible. This is what Hollyn discovered on her spiritual journey.

Back in the days when My Space was one of the top social media platforms, Lacey Sturm sent out a poll to her followers. This question asked who they would like to meet the most in life? The number one response was surprisingly God. Subsequently, Lacey wrote a song to capture the feeling of God’s omnipresence on earth. All Around Me highlights how meeting God in person would become a transformational event.

Biblical Application:

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” 38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons, Mark 1:35-39.

Exegesis of All Around Me:

My hands are searching for you
My arms are outstretched towards you
I feel you on my fingertips
My tongue dances behind my lips for you
This fire runs in through my being
Burning, I’m not used to seeing you

Lacey appears to begin her search for God in prayer. Although she doesn’t seem to be on her knees, Lacey is reaching out to the heavens, hoping to be touched by God. The lyrics at the end of this opening stanza expresses Lacey’s hunger and passion to meet God.

Either Lacey is talking about being alive or God declares that He is alive.

I can feel you all around me
Thickening the air I’m breathing
Holding on to all I’m feeling
Savoring this heart that’s healing

Lacey reveals the reason for this search for God, to heal her heart from a painful event in the past.

My hands float up above me
And you whisper you love me
And I begin to fade
Into our secret place
The music makes me sway
The angels singing say
“We are alone with you”
I am alone and they are too with you

Lacey reveals a spiritual encounter with God. After hearing a small still voice, a chorus of angels enter with a message of assurance that God’s presence is all around Lacey.

Lacey, God and the angels are alive and well.

And I can feel you all around me
Thickening the air I’m breathing
Holding on to what I’m feeling
Savoring this heart that’s healing

Lacey can know feel and sense God’s presence after her encounter with an invisible God.

And I see you, holy

Lacey is overwhelmed with joy.

Excited to know the angels and God are all around her.

And I can feel you all around me
Thickening the air I’m breathing
Holding on to all I’m feeling

Lacey is starting to experience a spiritual transformation as her heart is healing.

Lacey is now placing her faith and trust in God.

Lacey believes that God will heal her heart and continue to watch over her life.

Final Thoughts:

My high school swim coach gave me an extra ticket to hear professional athletes from Philadelphia share about their faith. Like Lacey’s encounter with God, I was waiting to hear something earth shattering. Unfortunately, no one moved my soul until a man rolled up to the microphone in a wheelchair. After initially thinking, “what can this man share with me,” I began to be filled with the same burning passion that consumed Lacey. Skip spoke with a maturity that was foreign to me. Despite losing thousands of full scholarships to college following a water-skiing accident in high school, Skip had something inside of him that was missing from my life. Subsequently, before this night was over, I had my first encounter with God, asking Jesus to come into my heart. This is my testimony that God is all around me.

The Message Behind the Music-February 18

Inspiration Behind Always and Forever:

Members of the Heatwave wanted to create a love song that would stand the test of time to make their mark in music history. The initial goal was to compose a ballad with the emotions of devotion and commitment. Song writer Rod Temperton captured this vision within the lyrics of Always and Forever. Decades after Always and Forever was first released; my high school made this our theme song for Concord’s senior prom.

Biblical Application:

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles, 1 Timothy 2:1-7.

Exegesis of Always and Forever:

Always and forever, each moment with you
Is just like a dream to me that somehow came true
And I know tomorrow will still be the same
‘Cause we’ve got a life of love that won’t ever change and

Rod is envisioning the ideal relationship; something out of a dream. While skeptics may claim this is too good to be true, Rod has a strong belief that this relationship will continue to grow, lasting a lifetime.

And we’ll share tomorrow together

This opening chorus sounds like a prayer to be adorned, loved and appreciated. Deep down in his heart, Rod believes that this is the woman for me.

There’ll always be sunshine when I look at you
It’s something I can’t explain just the things that you do
But if you get lonely phone me and take
A second to give to me that magic you make and

Rod is singing about a love that never gets old as it appears that this couple continues to study one another, becoming more intimate as they grow old together.

Rod sings about a relationship void of doubt or jealousy. Breaking up isn’t even a distant thought.

The planned comment at the beginning of this stanza suggests a shared vision to be married for a lifetime.

This vision has created a special bond and will to love one another forever, till death do us part.

These lyrics express a type of marriage that God intended human beings to enter into.

Final Thoughts:

Learning to dance as a sophomore in high school was like breaking a chain of depression that consumed my life. While I experienced more pain in my initial high school relationships by being dumped, dancing freed me from being the shy boy sitting in a chair watching everyone else dance. Subsequently, when ballads like Always and Forever cleared the dance floor for couples, I eventually overcome my fear of stuttering to ask girls to a slow dance. Always and Forever bring back fond memories of high school, especially the friends that I still hold dear.

The Message Behind the Music-February 17

Inspiration Behind Glory of Love:

The inspiration for Glory of Love came to Peter Cetera while working on the soundtrack for Karate Kid II. The producers of this film wanted Peter to write a theme song centered around courage and honor. Peter collaborated with his wife at this time, Diana Nini and producer David Foster. This is how the powerful lyrics of Glory of Love were created.

Biblical Application:

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved, 1 Corinthians 10:31-33.

Exegesis of Glory of Love:

Tonight, it’s very clear
‘Cause we’re both lyin’ here
There’s so many things I wanna say
I will always love you
I would never leave you alone

There are moments of clarity within a relationship. Sometimes this involves humility, realizing that you haven’t been yourself lately. This clarity might conceive conviction, honesty or inspiration. Yet, before you speak, make sure you are going to carry out and fulfill the words that you speak.

Sometimes I just forget
Say things I might regret
It breaks my heart to see you cryin’
I don’t wanna lose you
I could never make it alone

Peter is reflecting upon the times in his marriage where he wasn’t very loving. Seeing Diana crying consumed Peter’s heart with guilt, wanting to change.

I’ll be the hero you’re dreamin’ of
We’ll live forever
Knowin’ together
That we did it all for the glory of love

This stanza is geared toward Karate Kid II. If this was focused on Diana, Peter and her wouldn’t have gotten a divorce.

You keep me standing tall
You help me through it all
I’m always strong when you’re beside me
I have always needed you
I could never make it alone

While the lyrics seem to be meant for a couple. Karate Kid II uses these words to highlight the mentorship between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel. Relationships that last are grounded in a mutual desire to be there for another in their time of need.

We’ll live forever
Knowin’ together
That we did it all for the glory of love

Fighting for honor involves doing the right thing with integrity. In a relationship, fighting to keep love alive can be exhausting, similar to Bruce Willis’ character in the Last Boy Scout. To pursue the glory of love, you must desire greatness, looking beyond the past scars of broken people to find intimacy.

It’s like a knight in shining armor
From a long time ago
Just in time, I will save the day
Take you to my castle far away

This stanza provides old dreams of a man in shining armor who swoops a woman off their feet, living the rest of their lives like a fairy tale, happily ever after.

I am a man who will fight for your honor
I’ll be the hero that you’re dreamin’ of
We’re gonna live forever
Knowin’ together
That we did it all for the glory of love

This is where Hollywood dreams are shattered as many men don’t treat a significant other like she is a queen. Words are useless if they are void of love.

While Glory of Love was a great addition to the Karate Kid II soundtrack, this song lost it’s true meaning for me when I discovered Peter and Diana got divorced.

Final Thoughts:

The glory of love in the spiritual realm is a shining example of a godly and loving marriage. This marriage is enhanced by children of character, prosperity and taking the torch for the glory of love into their own marriage. Unless vows of marriage are lived out with acts of love, the glory of love turns into shame.
