Standing, Kneeling or Sitting

If you have ever attended a professional sporting event, before each game begins the MC or Voice of the radio play by play makes an announcement.  The words usually go something like this, “will you now rise, take off your caps and direct your attention to the flag as we honor America with the singing of our National Anthem.”  This tradition would have likely continued.  Yet, following the stance of Colin Kaepernick during 2 NFL preseason games by sitting down, then taking a knee, the National Anthem may become a thing of the past just like saying the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools.

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, Psalm 1:1.

On any given Sunday, you will find most players standing, a few on one knee and perhaps a rebel sitting on the team’s bench.  Yet, what does it really mean to stand, kneel or sit.  Whenever someone stands it represents a few things.  Standing symbolizes a willing participant, taking a stance or coming together for a common cause.  To take a knee suggests someone is resting, to gather their strength before moving on.  Meanwhile, kneeling is more of an act of worship, to bow down in humility to honor God.  Finally, sitting has multiple meanings.  Individuals can participant in sit ins, join others in protest or in the biblical context, sitting down refers to completing what you set out to do.

But whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night, Psalm 1:2.

Going forward, I hope that singing the National Anthem doesn’t turn into the ACLU’s attack on the pledge of allegiance.  Nonetheless, how people live, the stances you take and the character displayed will be a greater factor than celebrities on television.  In this day and age, people are starving for leaders, someone you can believe in and follow.  In the absence of leadership, the Colin Kaepernick’s of this world will try to set new trends to follow.  In the end, its up to you, to either stand, kneel or sit as America’s freedom’s are under siege by those who detest the Christian heritage of this country.  What will you do?

Those Without A Voice

Ever since Colin Kaepernick decided to sit down during the National Anthem a few weeks ago, his stance has taken on a life of itself.  Despite wearing socks that depicted cops as pigs, the liberal media covered for Colin, quickly sweeping this matter under the rug.  Meanwhile, the average hard working and law abiding citizen has been forgotten, left without a voice.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you, John 14:26.

The immigrant whose life long desire of owning their own business, the entrepreneur studying the latest trends and God fearing parents trying to start a family typically remain out of the limelight.  Regardless of the roadblocks each face, rugged individualism guide these goal oriented people.  Although success may not be obtained on the first attempt, the hope of the American dream keep many individuals going.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words, Romans 8:26.

If you feel left out, forgotten by your country and media, there is One who can intercede on your behalf.  When you reach a crossroads, not sure where to turn, the Holy Spirit is on call waiting for your prayer.  To those who believe in a risen Messiah, this invisible presence stands tall in the darkness of life.  Therefore, if you are on the verge of giving up or throwing in the towel, make sure you cry out to the great I Am; then, you will have a place in eternity.

Building Up or Tearing Down

In the aftermath of Colin Kaepernick’s decision to sit down during the national anthem before last weekend’s third NFL preseason game, social media has exploded.  Between cable news, talk radio and Twitter, opinions on this protest have come fast and furious.  Despite all the arguments made on either side of Kaepernick’s stance, one valuable piece is missing.  It’s not what Colin did, refusing to stand and honor the American flag, its what he will do.

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?  For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, Luke 14:28-29.”

On June 5th, 2014, Colin Kaepernick signed a 6 year 110 million dollar contract with 61 million of this amount guaranteed.  Thus, Colin has the financial resources to make a difference in any community that he chooses to help.  Using his celebrity status to prove a point only magnifies this hot button issue.  Nonetheless, words are meaningless without action.  Jesus makes a similar point in Luke 14 in the context of becoming a disciple.  Jesus warns any lukewarm candidates, “don’t start something that you can’t or won’t finish.”

“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters, Matthew 12:30.”

No whatever where you live, what you do or whom you come in contact with, anyone can point out what’s wrong in this world.  Yet, just because a few police officers, public servants or other individuals act inappropriately does not mean everyone in these fields are corrupt.  Instead of adding fuel to the fire, the best course of action involves building up others.  Jesus uses an analogy about gathering and scattering.  If you’re really for change, your actions will leave a lasting legacy like Dr. Martin King Jr.  However, if you’re all talk without any substance, than you are actually tearing down that which others gave their lives to protect.
