Inspiration Behind Whatever It Takes:
Lead singer Jason Wade leans on his own personal experiences from past relationships to write Whatever It Takes. Whether you’re still young or older, most people learn via trial and error, trying to avoid making the same mistakes in future relationships. Whatever It Takes provides hope to individuals searching for redemption, following the mantra to do whatever it takes to save a relationship.
Biblical Application:
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you, Ephesians 4:29-32.
Exegesis of Whatever It Takes:
A strangled smile fell from your face
It kills me that I hurt you this way
The worst part is that I didn’t even know
Now, there’s a million reasons for you to go
But if you can find a reason to stay
Jason hurt someone special in his life. Perhaps Jason wasn’t mature enough at this time to realize what he was doing was wrong. Now he is scrambling, humble and begging for her to stay.
I’ll do whatever it takes to turn this around
I know what’s at stake, I know that I’ve let you down
And if you give me a chance, believe that I can change
I’ll keep us together whatever it takes
Jason is asking for a second chance, willing to do whatever it takes to save this relationship.
She said, “If we’re gonna make this work
You gotta let me inside even though it hurts
Don’t hide the broken parts that I need to see”
She said, “Like it or not, it’s the way it’s gotta be
You gotta love yourself if you can ever love me”
Jason was holding his feelings inside. She is asking Jason to become vulnerable. Jason appears to be struggling to forgive himself for something he did in the past. She realizes that Jason needs to learn to forgive himself before he can learn to love.
I’ll do whatever it takes to turn this around
I know what’s at stake, I know that I’ve let you down
And if you give me a chance and give me a break
I’ll keep us together, I know you deserve much better
Jason is willing to change. By learning to forgive and love himself, he’ll be better prepared to love others.
But remember the time I told you the way that I felt
That I’d be lost without you and never find myself
Let’s hold on to each other above everything else
Start over, start over
Jason wants to start over, to love each other like the beginning of their relationship.
I’ll do whatever it takes to turn this around
I know what’s at stake, I know that I’ve let you down
And if you give me a chance, believe that I can change
I’ll keep us together whatever it takes
Jason doesn’t what this to end like previous relationships. He is all in, eager to do whatever it takes if given a second chance.
Final Thoughts:
There is an apathy that exists in current relationships with few individuals willing to go the extra mile to save a relationship on the rocks. However, when people become open to loving others like Jesus, you’ll be given a second chance to make love last this time. When you develop a whatever it takes mentality, marriages can survive and blossom today.
