S.A.N.S. Episode 189: Lead Me

During a five-year stretch, I served on a security team for Christian concerts at Red Lion. The David Crowder Band and the News Boys were the headliners that our church hosted. However, one of the lesser-known bands at who opened for the News Boys was Sanctus Real. While I was busy at my security check point, a friend told me about their testimony shared on stage about battling with stuttering.

Let no one despise or think less of you because of your youth, but be an example (pattern) for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity, 1 Timothy 4:12.

Sanctus Real’s song Lead Me reminds me of a message passed on to a first century preacher. Age shouldn’t be used as an excuse to not lead others. Rather, leadership involves emulating the life, speech and faith of Jesus Christ. The lyrics of Lead Me talk about reflecting upon what’s going on inside of you. Things may look okay externally, but leading starts by being transformed from within.

Afflictions Eclipsed by Glory

Usually, I have a tendency to ask God, “why me” when troubles arise.  Yet, as I was worshiping the Lord in song this morning, I received a brief reply.  Like a snap shot or vision, my afflictions of the past and present occur so that these trials can be eclipsed by God’s glory.

The first major affliction I endured arrived on graduation day, when one of my best friends from high school was diagnosed with cancer.  When her cancer went into remission 1 year later, I breathed a deep sigh of relief until it returned to take Maureen’s life abruptly.  Without experiencing this hardship, I probably would have become a golf course architect, my concentration in college, instead of entering youth ministry.

My second malady was self inflicted, on a golf course while attempting to earn my players card to become a certified P.G.A. professional.  I hit 26 out of 36 greens in regulation, 22 out of 28 fairways and played the hardest hole 1 under par through 2 rounds.  Somewhere in the spiritual realm, strange acts of nature kept by ball from going in the hole, especially when I 3 and 4 putted the same hole, missing my card by 2 shots.  Yet, this epic failure prompted me to become a high school Bible teacher for a decade.

Finally, losing my teaching position in 2012 was a tough blow to my confidence and ego.  However, from the ashes of despair, God carried me until I was ready for my next assignment.  As I start this new adventure on Tuesday with Amazon, I don’t know what the future holds.  Nonetheless, whether, good, bad or indifferent, any afflictions I suffer will surely be eclipsed by God’s glory.

A Revolutionary Notion

Although high school is long gone, in my rear view mirror, cliques still exist, especially in the work place.  Human nature draws you toward others you share a common interest with, enjoy being around or simply connect.  Within these groups, you find comfort or like the show Cheers,  a place where everyone knows your name, with whom you freely socialize.  Yet, you have to be cautious that the people you hang with don’t create an us verses them mentality.  This leads to divisiveness and tends to persuade you to develop opinions of others you don’t even know.

During his life, Jesus always had a way with words, a keen ability to talk to people all on levels of life, unlike certain college professors and theologians.  In Matthew 5:43-47, Jesus introduces a revolutionary notion.  Stating the obvious, we tend to love those that love us, especially those who annually give you great Christmas presents.  However, Jesus warns the crowd he is speaking to, urging them to avoid the clique mentality.  By giving into peer pressure, you are no better than a pagan.  According to Jesus, true love occurs when a person begins to love and pray for their enemies.

Unfortunately, most things are easier said than done.  All of us have a person who gets under our skin, irritates us or annoys us like no one else.  Praying for them and others you dislike is extremely difficult, unnatural and the last thing on our minds.  In this weakness, the Holy Spirit has given us everything we need for life, 2 Peter 1:3-4.  Therefore, as you learn to tap into the power of the Holy Spirit, this notion can result in a revolutionary love.
