A Lesson in Humility

When you can’t make your dream job happen, you have to come up with plan B. When plan B fails miserably, you have to scramble to use all of your available resources to hope something will turn up. This is a brief summary of my life over the past 7 months. Following months and months of disappointments, this emotional letdown has taught me a lesson in humility.

A false balance and unrighteous dealings are extremely offensive and shamefully sinful to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight. 2 When swelling and pride come, then emptiness and shame come also, but with the humble (those who are lowly, who have been pruned or chiseled by trial, and renounce self) are skillful and godly Wisdom and soundness, Proverbs 11:1-2.

One of the wisest persons to walk the face of the earth writes about humility in the passage above. King Solomon was no saint who had his own self-destructive practices. Solomon’s love for women led to 700 wives and 300 concubines. This series of poor decisions to indulge his sexual desires resulted in several dysfunctional relationships. Subsequential, Solomon provides his own lessons in humility.

Who, although being essentially one with God and in the form of God [[b]possessing the fullness of the attributes which make God God], did not [c]think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped [d]or retained, 7 But stripped Himself [of all privileges and [e]rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being. 8 And after He had appeared in human form, He abased and humbled Himself [still further] and carried His obedience to the extreme of death, even the death of the cross! – Philippians 2:6-8.

While I thought my life was bad, the Holy Spirit reminded me of what Jesus went through to save the world from sin. During his own set of temptations in Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus could have bragged about his divine power by turning stones to bread and fly through the air like Superman. Yet, despite being the Son of God, Jesus humbled himself by laying down his own life to save the world, John 3:16-17. The next time you think that your life is so important, consider Jesus’ lesson in humility in the passage above.

Abstain from and Shrink any Hints of Evil

When it comes to sex education, abstinence remains the best policy. Abstaining from sex provides a 100% guarantee that teenagers will avoid becoming pregnant or contract a sexual disease. Unfortunately, administrators, educators, and school boards abandoned biblical principles back in the 1960’s. In the last 50 years, elementary, junior high and high schools pass out condoms like candy. Instead of making sex education safer, students are encouraged to experiment with condoms or explore what pronoun they prefer.

For this is the will of God, that you should be consecrated (separated and set apart for pure and holy living): that you should abstain and shrink from all sexual vice, 1 Thessalonians 4:3.

The apostle Paul doesn’t hold back his feelings about sexual desires in the passage above. Paul urges one church to abstain from and shrink any ties to lustful desires, Galatians 5:19-21. Whether it’s a coincidence or not, the first and last act of our carnal desires are sexual in nature. The first is a gateway sin known as sexual immorality, opening the door to ungodly relationships. The final act is participating in orgies which is essentially full blown sexual sin.

That each one of you should know how to possess (control, manage) his own body in consecration (purity, separated from things profane) and honor, 5 Not [to be used] in the passion of lust like the heathen, who are ignorant of the true God and have no knowledge of His will, 1 Thessalonians 4:4-5.

The passage above provides guidelines to abstain from and shrink all sexual vices. This requires a substitute, a replacement in the form fruits of the spirit, Galatians 5:22-23. In order to control and manage your own body, abstinence from carnal appetites is essential. Since God calls Christian’s to higher standards than the world, self control must lead the way. Until individuals understand the internal battle going on daily, Galatians 5:16-18, you won’t be able to abstain from and shrink the sexual disease known as sin. Flee now while you still have time to turn around.

Shocking Words from Inside the Bible

Inside of book 3 within Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis wrote a chapter entitled Sexual Morality.  Lewis takes an unusual angle, comparing food to sex, using this to explain why an adult may venture into a strip club.  This appetite is called the Beast of Lust by the group Tribe of Dan, a powerful force which persuades people to wander further than they ever expected or thought to go beyond God’s boundaries defined by the Bible.  Lewis is likely referencing 1 Corinthians 6:12-20, where the apostle Paul warns believers against giving into their sexual desires outside of marriage.  Paul introduces the concept of soul ties, where sleeping with another person binds a part of your soul together with this individual.  These ties are strong, often ruining marriages due to previous encounters, one night stands or prior relationships.

One of my favorite classes I taught for 10 years changed its name several times, yet the textbook remained the same, Mere Christianity.  Upon reaching C.S. Lewis’ chapter on sex, I usually spent a day introducing students to Leviticus 18, a guide for what is and what isn’t lawful sexually.  Although many of the things mentioned are common sense, if you have ever read the book of Genesis, you might be surprised by what you missed, overlooked or like me, shake your head, feeling like you need a shower.  Incest, homosexuality and one night stands are a common theme within the first 37 chapters of Genesis.  Chapter 38 even eludes to masterbation in verses 9-10 and contains an act of prostitution before ending in the birth of twins.  Yes, there are definitely shocking words from inside the Bible, yet why do they exist?

First, sex is the first and last act of the sinful nature.  Galatians 5:19 lists sexual immorality as the most natural feeling, inclination or tendency that human beings face.  When someone feeds this hunger without limits, it can give birth to orgies, the last act of the flesh in Galatians 5:21 when sin is full blown.  Second, God doesn’t beat around the bush; He is honest, telling the world what to expect when you indulge into worldly pleasures, Romans 8:5-9.  Free will gives everyone options, to do as they please while on earth.  Finally, Jesus is real, speaking on your level, even if it meant speaking to drunk guests at weddings, John 2:1-11.  While many churches are afraid of speaking about sex in sermons, the Bible is full of shocking words to get your attention so that one day, you might make reservations for a future life in heaven, John 3:16-17.  Jesus is just a prayer away, Romans 10:9-10!

Opps … I Did It Again.

An acronym that I use for sin is Sudden Irrational Nonsense.  Whether you are struggling with something like cursing, lying or sexual desires, all sins can be addictive.  This is why so many individuals make the honest confession, “Opps, I did it again!”

Unfortunately, the Christian Community has created their own ranking system, giving a degree of severity for each transgression.  The church in Rome was the first to develop this pious attitude, mentioned by the apostle Paul in Romans 1:18-32.  This mindset filtered down into their hearts, leading toward thoughts like “Well at least I am not a murderer, God hater or fornicator.”  Struck down by the words of Romans 2:1-5, God gives words of hope for those wresting with the Opps I did it again syndrome, Romans 2:6-10.

When these words become a weekly or daily occurrence, one call lean on the grace of God.   The well known acronym God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense helps a sinner find comfort in the Bible’s promise, Ephesians 2:8-9.  Beyond this, one must consider how contrite you are after sinning?  If sorrow is absence from a guilty heart, Jesus is nothing more than a Get of a Jail Free Card, Hebrews 6:4-6.  As an expert in sin, reaching this point requires intervention starting with an accountability partner, once a week at the minimum.  If this step is ineffective, you must purge yourself from anything that triggers the thought of sin.  Like detox, this one of the most painful, but a necessary element to achieve freedom.  The goal is perfection, Matthew 5:48, yet the reality of life is giving your best each and every day, letting God do the rest.  When the opps I did it again resurfaces, turn your prayers toward the sky, trusting in God’s forgiveness, grace and mercy, John 3:16-17.
