The Point of the Cross

In the Old Testament, initial commandments, laws and principles were passed down through word of mouth from one generation to the next.  Until Moses arrived upon the scene, there was no written word of God.  As one of the forefathers of Israel, God spoke directly to Moses, usually in the mountains on either Mount Horeb and or Sinai.  One of the messages delivered to Moses is that there is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood.

For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life, Leviticus 17:11.

In the early first century, Jesus built an earthly ministry using disciples.  Prior to his death of the cross, Jesus revealed the purpose for his human sacrifice.  Befuddled by Jesus words, many of his followers thought he would become an earthly king.  Thus, it wasn’t until resurrection Sunday when the disciples began to connect the dots.  The apostle Paul writes several of his epistles about the point of the cross.  Jesus who had no sin became sin for us so that in Christ, we might become the righteous of God.

He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world, 1 John 2:2.

An entire chapter of 1 Corinthians is devoted to Jesus’ relationship to the cross.   According to 1 Corinthians 15, Jesus conquered sin and death with his resurrection.  In a letter to the church at Colosse, Paul talks about how Christians are buried with Christ in their baptism and raised with Him through the resurrection.  So what is the point of the cross?   Life begins at the cross, Matthew 16:24-26, as you deny yourself, take up the cross and follow Jesus as a servant and vessel of love.

Forgotten Commandments

History has a habit of uncovering relics from the past.  Caves hid the Dead Sea Scrolls until 1946 when 981 texts written in Aramaic, Greek and Hebrews were discovered over a 10 year period.  However, there are always things in plain sight which get overlooked, neglected by those too busy to slow down.

As I opened Leviticus 19 today, I stumbled upon an expanded version of the 10 commandments.  Although some of the passages are subtle reminders, God conveys to Moses the whys to keeping decrees and laws.  These biblical nuggets offer common sense, direction and a foundation for faith.  Nonetheless, unless you accept and practice these precepts, you will be vulnerable to straying off course.

There are several reasons why commandments are forgotten.  First, the Bible offends those comfortable with how they are living, reluctant to change.  Second, people don’t like to be told that they are wrong, especially if there are eternal consequences.  Third, since truth has become relative, everyone has their own take on right and wrong.  In the end, Leviticus 19 serves as a wake up call, to alert those sleep walking through life.  May the words of Scripture breathe life into sleepy, tired and weary souls.

Who is Telling the Truth?

One of my college textbooks referred to the Bible as a book of fables, stories which sound good, but aren’t real.  Over the course of the semester, I discovered that our Sociology book used the same timelines as referenced in the Bible.  Upon reading this information, I began to wonder, who is telling the truth?

As I studied Genesis 19 this morning, I wanted to know the origin of sodomy.  Based upon my research, credit is given to the city of Sodom, whose blatant sexual perversions in Genesis 19:4-9 coined the term which applies to modern sodomy laws.  If the Bible is not to be taken serious, why then have most of the nations of the world incorporated biblical principles into their societal rules and regulations?

Sure, comprehending a world wide flood is difficult to grasp.  However, other events such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah can be supported by science.  According to Genesis 19:27-28, this catastrophe sounds similar to a pyroclastic flow, a side effect of a major volcanic eruption.  Archeologist have found bodies like Lot’s wife, mummified by the hot ashes and gas.  When you apply the 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 principle, regardless of the topic or subject, the Holy Spirit can reveal to you like John 4:23-24, who is telling the truth.
