Living as a Fugitive from God

Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones star in the 1993 the Fugitive.  When noted surgeon Richard Kimble is wrongfully accused, tried and convicted for the brutal murder of his wife, a crash enables him to escape to prove his innocence.  Like any modern murder mystery series, sometimes the evidence is overwhelming, making it nearly impossible to convince authorities of the truth.  Thus, most fugitives are forced to runaway until a plan is advised to regain their freedom through the justice system.

But the man who was injuring his neighbor pushed Moses away, saying, ‘Who appointed you ruler and judge over us? 28 Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ 29 At this remark Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he fathered two sons, Acts 7:28-29.

One of the forefathers of Israel found himself in a similar position.  Raised by the daughter of Pharaoh, Moses could no longer remain silent as his descendants were being treated as slaves of Egypt.  When Moses witnessed a brutal beating, he avenged the oppression of one man by killing an Egyptian.  As soon as news spread of Moses’ act of aggression, he fled to Midian, leaving as a fugitive for forty years.  All we know about these wasted years is that Moses fathered two sons.

30 “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning thorn bush. 31 When Moses saw it, he was astonished at the sight; but as he went near to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came [to him, saying], Acts 7:30-31.

You don’t have to commit a crime to feel like a fugitive.  Rather, all you need to do is make other things in life a greater priority than God.  If this trend continues, it won’t be long before Sunday is just another day to do what you want instead of pausing to worship the Lord.  God nudged Moses by using an angel to get him back on track, in the direction of where the Lord desires.  Sadly, I find myself in a similar place, living as a fugitive from God.  I thought Easter Sunday would reignite a fire within my soul, but my priorities haven’t changed.  I shouldn’t need an angel to tell me to return to church.  Rather, an infusion from the Word of God, the Bible should provide conviction to bring me back again.

The Refueling of the Holy Spirit

Modern technology has developed a way for certain types of aircraft to re-fuel while in mid-air.  Air tankers contain a nozzle which extends and connects to crafts low on fuel like Air Force One in the 1997 Harrison Ford film.  This capability allows fighter jets to remain in the air for longer periods of time.

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness, 2 Peter 1:3.
Dietrich Mateschitz invented a drink based upon a similar concept, helping human beings refuel when your energy is lost.  In 1987, Red Bull Energy Drink was sold for the first time in Austria.  This formula was inspired by functional drinks from the Far East like Green Tea.  Subsequently, if you feel like you’re about the crash, consumers continue to reach for this can to boost their energy.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, Isaiah 11:2.
The prophet Isaiah writes about a spiritual power available to those longing for discernment, insight and wisdom.  According to one of twelve disciples, the Holy Spirit was sent by Jesus following his ascension to refuel spiritually.  While this Holy Ghost is invisible, it’s presence brings counsel, knowledge and understanding.  If you are currently emotionally drained, out of energy or have lost your way, cry out to the Lord in prayer so that the refueling of the Holy Spirit will begin.

Inside the Ark

Modern fascination with the Ark of the Covenant began in 1981 when Raiders of the Lost Ark was released.  In case you’ve forgotten, Harrison Ford plays Dr. Indiana Jones, an archeologist and expert in the occult who is hired by the United States to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Germans during World War II.  Although this film displays a somewhat realistic nature of the Ark’s power, what lies inside is just as important.

Which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant, Hebrews 9:4.

God told Moses to place three significant pieces of Israel’s history inside the ark as a reminder of God’s providence over the Jews.  The first is a jar of manna, bread from heaven sent to keep those wandering in the desert from starving to death.  The next piece is Aaron’s staff which was turned into a snake, ate up all the staff snakes made by Egyptian magicians before turning back into a staff.  This staff symbolizes God’s power during the ten plagues.  Finally, the ten commandments, written on stone tablets is the last piece, serving as a blue print for how to live and love God and man.

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.  But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name, John 20:30-31.

In recent years, the concept of time capsules have been used, burying things of the present so that those in the future may be reminded of the past.  Essentially, the Ark of the Covenant is God’s time capsule.  Whether this has already been found and hidden away in some government storage center or not, history is waiting to be uncovered.  Therefore, may those who are seeking answers to life’s questions find meaning in what lies inside the ark.
