Engaging Our Culture: May 12-Help Me with My Unbelief

Video of the Day: Clip from the 1980 movie “The Empire Strikes Back”

Bible Verse of the Day:

So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” 23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” – Mark 9:20-24

Biblical Connection:

In the context of Star Wars, the force that Yodi speaks of is a mysterious energy field created by life that binds the galaxy together. This metaphysical power begins in the mind of Jedi warriors like Luke as each is introduced to the force. Like anything in life, the spiritual energy in the force of Star Wars can be used for good or evil. Yet, without belief and faith, Jedis never reach their potential.

The force that John Mark speaks of in today’s passage is the power of the Holy Spirit. Since one of Jesus’ disciples compares the Devil to the father of all lies, John 8:44, seeds of doubt continue to be sown into the minds of human beings long after the fall of Adam and Eve, Genesis 3:6-7. Therefore, whenever you find yourself losing faith, cry out to Jesus to help you with your unbelief.

Closing Song:

One of my favorite lines from today’s song is that your past is a conduit for future success. However, you have to reach a point in your life like the father of this boy, you must confess your unbelief before your faith is fanned into action, 2 Timothy 1:7. May today’s message inspire you to come to life spiritually this spring.

Engaging Our Culture: May 11-Give Your Mom a Break this Mother’s Day

Video of the Day: Clip from the 2021 movie “Coda”

Bible Verse of the Day:

A wife of noble character who can find?  She is worth far more than rubies. 11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. 12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life, Proverbs 31:10-12.

Biblical Connection:

Today’s movie clip encapsulates things that a mother has to endure over the course of her life inside her own home. However, in the context of Coda, it is Ruby, the only member of her family who can hear, serving as a daughter and translator. Ruby is torn between two worlds, her parents struggling fishing boat and pursuing her passion of music. These are the types of sacrifices that mothers make daily, often giving up their own dreams to help raise their children.

While Solomon is the main author of the Book of Proverbs, the last two chapters are written by two other individuals: Agur and King Lemuel. These wise sayings deviate from biblical life lessons for a son in the first 29 chapters to inspired utterances and honoring godly women. Over my 55 years of living in the United States, mothers placed their dreams on hold until their children were grown. On this Mother’s Day, give mom a break by celebrating all that she has done for you and your family.

Closing Song:

Whether it’s a brunch, lunch or dinner, make sure you take the time to honor your mother and grandmothers on this special day.

Engaging Our Culture: May 10-What If God Was Visible

Video of the Day: Clip from Drama Series “Joan of Arcadia”

Bible Verse of the Day:

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” – Genesis 3:8-11

Biblical Connection:

Joan of Arcadia used Joan Osborne’s One of Us as its theme song. The lyrics set the premise for this series which aired for 2 full seasons on CBS. After her brother is paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident, God appears to Joan as a teenage boy. Today’s scene shines light on why this appearance, made it easier for Joan to accept and understand this presence of God. As Joan struggles through another unexpected trial in life, she has more questions than answers.

In today’s featured passage, God was visible during the earliest days on earth. Despite only being given one rule to follow, curiosity of the Tree of Knowledge sowed a seed of rebellion within Eve’s mind. While Adam was right there with Eve during this conversation with the serpent, the Devil in disguise, he never intervened. This lack of leadership led to being kicked out of the Garden of Eden, ending the era when God was visible.

Closing Song:

While there are theological issues with the lyrics to One of Us, this does pose an interesting question. As human beings get caught up in the routines of life, how many times do you miss out on a conversation that God wants you to have? Perhaps, today’s blog serves as a reminder to open your eyes to see who God wants you to talk to today. Keep in step with God’s Spirit, Galatians 5:25, to awaken your faith thereby making the presence of Jesus in your life visible.

Engaging Our Culture: May 9-Removing Spiritual Parasites from Your Life

Video of the Day: Clip from the 2008 movie “Fireproof”

Bible Verse of the Day:

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow, Psalm 51:7.

Biblical Connection:

After receiving the Love Dare book for saving his marriage from his father, Kirk Cameron plays Caleb Holt who is instantly made aware of a serious addiction. While the book Caleb is reading refers to this as a parasite, it is sucking the life out of his soul. Subsequently, Caleb finds himself in a crisis of faith: to click on a link to take him to see pornography or purge his life from the source of this unholy practice.

After being confronted by the prophet Nathan, David is confronted by the reality of his adultery with a married woman and the murder of her husband to cover up his child inside of Bathsheba. Today’s verse is part of David’s confession to God. While the NIV starts with cleanse, other translations use the Old Testament practice of purging sin from your life. Removing spiritual parasites from your life will be painful, but a necessary step towards freedom in Christ.

Closing Song:

Sometimes I am overwhelmed by the amount of sin revealed to me by the Holy Spirit. Yet, the sooner you address these spiritual parasites, the closer you’ll be to freedom from the chains of sin.

Engaging Our Culture: May 8-When Paradise is Delayed

Video of the Day: Trailer from the 2007 movie “Welcome to Paradise”

Bible Verse of the Day:

In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls, 1 Peter 1:6-9.

Biblical Connection:

I started attending a Methodist youth group during my junior year of high school. In the years that followed, I joined my first church in college and became friends with individuals who went on to be pastors in the Methodist Church. Like the character of Reverend Debbie Laramie in Welcome to Paradise, pastors regularly were moved from church to church, often without much notice. Subsequently, when Debbie, Crystal Bernard, is forced to move to a small remote town, her vision for Paradise Church is delayed until a fire brings this church community together.

Peter, one of the members of Jesus’ inner circle, isn’t referring to a physical fire inside a building. Rather, Peter compares fire to a spiritual refining process that Christians must go through. Unlike prosperity preachers who proclaim that your life will be filled with blessings once you become a Christian, this is far from reality. Instead, life consists of a serious of trials designed to test and refine your faith. Like the words of Jesus’ earthly brother, these unscheduled events come without warning, teaching character, maturity and perseverance to all who endure this pain, James 1:2-4.

Closing Song:

If you feel like your world is melting this month, reach out to the hand of Jesus who will walk by your side. Like the words of the famous poem Footprints, God will be right there without you all the way.

Engaging Our Culture: May 7-A Life Changing Decision

Video of the Day: Trailer from the 2005 movie “End of the Spear”

Bible Verse of the Day:

See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. 16 For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, 18 I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess, Deuteronomy 30:15-18.

Biblical Connection:

During his farewell address to the nation of Israel with Joshua set to take over as their spiritual leader, Moses highlights the importance of the choices that you make in life. In the film End of the Spear, based upon the truth story of 5 male missionaries, each died a martyr’s life. Sometimes following God’s call to fulfill the great commission, Acts 1:8, is just as dangerous as making a bad decision which gives the devil a foothold over your life, Ephesians 4:26-27.

The book of Deuteronomy means second law. As human beings, we tend to be forgetful individuals. Subsequently, the further you drift from God and the Bible, the more your mind is open to the ways of this progressive age. Yet, to those who look to the Bible for daily guidance, Moses points out that this results in blessings from God. As Christianity becomes a habit and way of life, this life changing decision will prepare you for any situation that you may encounter.

Closing Song:

Mincayani is born into a violent tribe who lives by the motto spear and live or be speared and die. After taking part in the deaths of 5 missionary men, who activated their faith, Mincayani’s life is transformed when he meets the son of the father he killed. One life changing decision led to the salvation of many members of the Waodani tribe. This is what God can do when faith is activated.

Engaging Our Culture: May 6-Beware of Impure Motives

Video of the Day: Clip from the 2005 movie “Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”

Bible Verse of the Day:

And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve, 2 Corinthians 11:12-15.

Biblical Connection:

Author C.S. Lewis crafted a series of books from 1950-1956 which were made into a film in 2005. Lewis uses biblical symbolism to illustrate specific character traits that you may experience in real life. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe reveal that first impressions maybe masked with impure motives. The White Witch starts off like a magical genie granting Edmund’s requests, but as this conversation continues her wicked intentions rise to the surface.

Edmund was too hungry and thirsty to notice the White Witch’s sinister plan. As the youngest brother, overshadowed by his older two siblings, the Witch used this for her own advantage. Peter’s second visit to see the White Witch wasn’t pleasant, no longer an angel in disguise. The apostle Paul warns the Church at Corinth of ongoing spiritual attacks. Unfortunately, some church members walked in the footsteps of Edmund, deceived by followers of Satan.

Closing Song:

There was an old saying that I was introduced to in college. Parking yourself in a garage doesn’t make you a car. In the same manner, simply attending church doesn’t make you a Christian. Jesus doesn’t want worshippers of a religion. Rather, God desires a personal relationship, Romans 10:9-11. This relationship helps shine light on imitators of faith with impure motives.

Engaging Our Culture: May 5-Celebrating Hard Work

Video of the Day: Clip from the 2015 movie “MacFarland USA”

Bible Verse of the Day:

All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty, Proverbs 14:23.

Biblical Connection:

Jim White moves his family to MacFarland, a farming region in California. When coaching football doesn’t work out, White played by Kevin Costner starts a cross-country team. When their early morning and afternoon jobs interfere with practice, Jim volunteers for a day to see if he can win their parents over. Discipline and hard work lead MacFarland to qualify for the state championship meet. Although Cinco de Mayo was inspired by Mexico’s military victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, I’m celebrating the hard work of their descendants.

The Book of Proverbs was written by King Solomon to bestow wisdom upon his children. As the father of several hundred sons, Solomon appears to have one specific son in mind. Solomon’s goal is to train a child up in the Lord with nuggets of truth to lead a godly life. Today’s proverb is based the importance of hard work. As a former cross-country runner, looking forward to long distance runs or speed work on the track isn’t fun. Yet, the runners on this MacFarland team worked before school, practiced and worked until dark. This is the inspiration for Jim’s White pre-race speech.

Closing Song:

Although I stopped running years ago due to bad knees, I still remember the freedom that running brought my soul. As you participate in Cinco de Mayo celebrations, make sure that discipline and hard work is honored on this day.

Engaging Our Culture: May 4-When Others Bring Out the Devil in You

Video of the Day: Clip from the 1989 movie “Terms of Endearment”

Bible Verse of the Day:

For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing., Romans 7:18-19.

Biblical Connection:

Star Wars introduced the concept of the force and the dark side to many Americans. Instead of inserting of clip from this movie franchise, I opted for a shorter scene that human beings can relate to. There are certain individuals that bring out the worst in you. This could be due to a personality clash or power struggle for control. Whatever the reason, when someone knows what buttons to push, you end up losing control and your sinful nature acts out.

The apostle Paul writes about a thorn in his flesh to the Church in Corinth, 2 Corinthians 12:7. Paul isn’t clear if this was a medical condition, nagging injury, or demonic oppression. Yet, in a letter to the Church at Rome, Paul becomes vulnerable, sharing what happens to him when the sinful nature begins to take over his life. This is spiritual darkness, when a lack of self-control results in evil and devilish acts. Paul comes to the conclusion that only Jesus can rescue him from this condition.

Closing Song:

The next time you find yourself about to lose it, cry out to Jesus before the sinful nature takes control of your body. Although you may not win every battle, allow the Devil to get the best of you, success is a process of praying for repentance and mercy to do better tomorrow and beyond.

Engaging Our Culture: May 3-Staying Optimistic Despite What Others May Say

Video of the Day: Clip from the 1989 movie “Dead Poets Society”

Bible Verse of the Day:

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing, 1 Thessalonians 5:11.

Biblical Connection:

As another school year comes to an end, students have already decided which professors and teachers they trust. As for the others, you may hear idle gossip or joke punchlines to express displeasure of their classes. Robin Williams plays John Keating, a former student who become a teacher at an exclusive boarding school for boys. As Keating begins to connect with several students, the administration isn’t comfortable with his unorthodox teaching methods. Subsequently, when one of his students dies, Keating is blamed and loses his job.

Social media is filled with personal opinions which tear down individuals, leaders and stars which someone doesn’t like for one reason or another. Just hanging around President Trump during a round of golf recently caused Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquan Barkley massive criticism. Rather than pile on, it’s time for Christians to rise above hate speech to stay optimistic. You never know how much a word of encouragement can build up someone’s confidence. As Mr. Keating left his classroom for the last time, his students risked being expelled to honor him.

Closing Song:

The next time you see someone becoming the media whipping boy or girl, attempting to ruin their reputation, don’t be afraid to say something positive. As my mother taught me years ago, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it.” It’s okay to refrain by being silent.
