Eric Clapton – Tears In Heaven (Official Video)

Inspiration Behind Tears in Heaven:

Following the accidental death of his 4-year-old son Conor, Eric Clapton was in shock. Conor was with Lory del Santo, Eric’s ex-girlfriend at the time. playing in her apartment. When a window was inadvertently left open, Conor fell to his death. As a father, seeking to come to grips with just happened, part of the grieving process involved writing the song Tears in Heaven.

Biblical Application:

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[b] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away,” Revelation 21:3-4.

Exegesis of Tears in Heaven:

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

Eric asks Conor if he would know who he was if they are reunited in heaven.

I must be strong
And carry on
‘Cause I know, I don’t belong
Here in heaven

Eric realizes that he must be strong following Conor’s death, believing that he doesn’t belong in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

Eric longs to be with and touch his son.

I’ll find my way
Through night and day
‘Cause I know, I just can’t stay
Here in heaven

Eric will do what he has to do to get by here on earth.

Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please

There will be moments in life that will bring you to your knees. Shocked, heartbroken and begging for understanding.

Beyond the door
There’s peace, I’m sure
And I know there’ll be no more
Tears in heaven

Eric depicts the reality of Revelation 21:4.

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

Eric longs to be reunited with Conor.

I must be strong
And carry on
‘Cause I know, I don’t belong
Here in heaven

Eric must press on in his absence.

Lord, I don’t belong
Here in heaven

Either Eric doesn’t believe he is worthy of heaven or that he simply belongs on earth for now.

Yeah, thank you
Thank you
Thank you

Eric thanks God, perhaps for taking care of Conor in heaven.

Final Thoughts:

As a grandfather of two boys, I know how precious life is. When my youngest Walker, was rushed to the hospital two days after he was born, your mind races for understanding. Thankfully, Walker is now home with James and Emma, yet life is fragile, a vapor that appears for a while and then vanishing. The best thing you can do is savor every moment that you have, taking life one day at a time. When you seize each new day, you’ll have no regrets in the future.
