Inspiration Behind Therapy:
Following the breakup with his finance, Matt Thiessen secluded himself in a cabin. Matt ended up staying in Winchester, Tennessee for 3 months as he tried to process what went wrong. Matt did some deep soul searching, crying out to God in prayer for answers. This cabin and time of solitude served as therapy. a therapeutic place to work out his emotions which conceived the lyrics of Therapy.
Biblical Application:
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you,” Matthew 6:5-6.
Exegesis of Therapy:
I never though I’d be driving through the country just to drive
With only music and the clothes that I woke up in
People heal in different ways. For Matt, driving to this cabin began his time of reflection.
I never thought I’d need all this time alone it goes to show
I had so much yet I had need for nothing but you
But you
Matt didn’t plan on spending 3 months in Tennessee. Yet, he needed this time to reconnect with God.
This is just therapy
Just call it what it is
With a death-grip on this life always transitioning
This is just therapy
Cause you won’t take my calls
And that makes God the only one who’s left to listen in to me
Matt tried to reach out to his ex-girlfriend hoping to get back to together, but she didn’t pick up the phone to talk. Subsequently, God was the only one who would listen to him.
Letting it all sink in
It’s good to feel the sting now and again
I hope it’s one less woeful thing there is to fight through
Forgetting it all begin
Fresh paper and nice expensive pen
The past can not subtract a thing from what I might do
For you
Unless that’s what I let it do
This pain allowed Matt to reflect upon this trial, hoping this is one less thing that he has to worry about in life. Matt appeared to write his ex but it appears this was unsuccessful.
This is just therapy
Just call it what it is
With a death-grip on this life always transitioning
This is just therapy
Cause you won’t take my calls
And that makes God the only one who’s left to listen in
Matt has come to the realization that his relationship is over and it’s time to transition by moving on with life.
Loneliness and solitude are two things not to get confused
Cause I spend my solitude with you
I gather all the questions of the things I just can’t get straight
And I answer them the way I guess you’d do
Matt is still wrestling with God in prayer for answers, trying to figure out what to do next.
Cause this is my therapy
Cause you’re the only one that’s listening to me
This is my therapy
Let’s call it what it is not what we were
With a death-grip on this life thats in transition
This is my therapy
Cause you won’t hear me out and that makes God the only one who’s left here to listen in
This trial in Matt’s life is forcing him to lean on God for understanding as he tries to heal.
This is just therapy
Just call it what it is
With a death-grip on this life always transitioning
This is just therapy
Cause you won’t take my calls
And that makes God the only one who’s left to listen in to me
At the end of the third month in this cabin, Matt had come to grips with his emotions. Despite his feelings for his ex, God gave Matt direction or some type of vision to move on with his life.
Final Thoughts:
Trials aren’t something that you put on a monthly calendar. Rather, these events arrive unannounced. Sometimes friends can help while other situations need to be resolved alone. As you begin 2026, make sure you take the necessary steps and time for your own therapy. After this recovery, you’ll be able to help those who are enduring a trial that you just overcame.
