The Cancelling of the Cancel Culture

The Cancel culture is a modern form of ostracism linked to the Me Too Movement. As the Me Too Movement formed in 2014 to defend woman from male predators, the Cancel Culture followed one year later. The idea that people pile onto others for bad behavior, triggered by social media to pressure inappropriate acts, beliefs and or comments to publically apologize has become a cultural phenomena. This movement does not discriminate as if you screw up, tension will build until the cries become so great, something will have to give.

And you who were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh (your sensuality, your sinful carnal nature), [God] brought to life together with [Christ], having [freely] forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 Having cancelled and blotted out and wiped away the handwriting of the note (bond) with its legal decrees and demands which was in force and stood against us (hostile to us). This [note with its regulations, decrees, and demands] He set aside and cleared completely out of our way by nailing it to [His] cross, Colossians 2:13-14.

The apostle Paul devote an entire chapter to a different kind of cancelling. In the middle of Colossians 2, Paul warns Christians in Colosse to avoid being deceived by deceptive and hollow human traditions. Perhaps, there were first century ideologies with different names that were getting people are riled up. Following Colossians 2:8, Paul turns his attention toward the human condition, corrupted by passions and lusts. This obvious flaw sets up the need for a Savior, to cancel the Old Testament law of sin and death.

[God] disarmed the principalities and powers that were ranged against us and made a bold display and public example of them, in triumphing over them in Him and in it [the cross], Colossians 2:15.

The atmosphere of today’s Cancel Culture resembles the scene in John 8:1-11. A woman is caught in the act of adultery as a crowd gathers in a public square. According to Jewish law, this woman was suppose to be stoned to death. Thus, as people begin to form a line, picking up stones, Jesus bends down on one knee, starting to write with his finger in the ground. Bible scholars have suggested that Jesus began to write down secret sins of those holding a stone. Whatever Jesus wrote, one by one stones were dropped and people quietly walked back to their homes. When you add the passages above to this event, this is how you cancel the Cancel Culture.

Truth and Integrity

Propaganda uses lies, half-truths, innuendo, smears, misinformation, one-sided arguments and inflammatory rhetoric to influence the public’s attitude toward a cause, ideal or, usually, a political agenda. Propaganda is regularly pushed by cable news networks, political lobbyists, and through social media posts. If you scan the headlines on any given day, you will find similar mantras, talking points, and vocabulary to convince the American people what they should believe about a specific issue or policy.

Stand therefore [hold your ground], having tightened the belt of truth around your loins and having put on the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God, Ephesians 6:14.

If a famous talk show host has an expert on to shed light on this hot topic, minds began to be swayed. When another professional in a similar field deviates from this view, the Cancel Culture is willing and able to beat this individual into submission by whatever means necessary. Even if the Science clearly supports this unpopular view, opinions are elevated to fact status so that what one political party wants, one political party gets. This hyper sensitive climate doesn’t leave room for truth or integrity to reside or fit in.

And having shod your feet in preparation [to face the enemy with the firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produced by the good news] of the Gospel of peace, Ephesians 6:15.

If you use the illustration portrayed by the apostle Paul, all it takes for truth to disappear is for the Belt of Truth to be loosened and taken off. As soon as moral absolutes are stripped away, the is no need for integrity. If everyone is doing what’s right in their own eyes, Judges 21:25, the truth turns to grey until that too soon fades away. Don’t look now, but truth and integrity are like spare change jars at your local convenience store. Until someone is willing to be courageous by taking a stand for God today, Ezekiel 22:30, I’m afraid truth and integrity will disappear like the Bill of Rights in our Constitution. May God inspire believers to stand in the gap daily for integrity and truth.

The Days of Our Lives in America

Who needs Reality Television when daily current events bring news stories that seem more appropriate for a comedy, drama or Sci-Fi thriller. Anyone who watches cable news, follows social media or scans the internet will find a real life soap opera. Instead of watching the Jersey Shore, people want to know what is it like to live in land formerly known as Chaz. When asked about protestors who have secured this six block section of downtown Seattle, the mayor replied, “If this movement continues, this could become the summer of love.” While members of the mainstream media have painted the picture of a street festival, some concerned citizens have requested to have their identities hidden to avoid any backlash.

Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry. 20 For man’s anger does not promote the righteousness God [wishes and requires], James 1:19-20.

Grant Napear was the Play by Play announcer for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association for 22 years. Over the past two decades, Napear has developed relationships with NBA players he called games for. Following the death of George Floyd, DeMarcus Cousins, a former star with the Kings reached out to Napear via a tweet. The context revolved around wanting to know Napear’s opinion on Black Lives Matter. Trying to be all encompassing, Grant tweeted, “All Lives Matter.” This tweet set social media on fire, creating a backlash against Napear and the King’s organization. Bowing down to the Cancel Culture, Grant Napear was fired after expressing his politically incorrect opinion.

See, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil, Deuteronomy 30:15.

Patrisse Khan-Cullors and Alicia Garza co-founded Black Lives Matter in 2013. Black Lives Matter was conceived following protests after police shootings of African Americans. Over the past 7 years, Black Lives Matter has grown to become an international activist movement. Protests and riots spawned by the outrage over George Floyd’s unnecessary death at the hands of 4 Minnesota police officers has increased the public awareness of Black Lives Matter. After the homicides of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in Brooklyn, New York, Blue Lives Matter was founded on December 20, 2014 to counteract Black Lives Matter. Blue Lives Matter is designed to change these wrongs to law enforcement by shedding positive light on America’s heroes to boost morale and gain society’s support.

[If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which] I command you today, to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His ordinances, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land into which you go to possess. 17 But if your [mind and] heart turn away and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today that you shall surely perish, and you shall not live long in the land which you pass over the Jordan to enter and possess, Deuteronomy 30:16-18

As political debates continue daily, one movement has been ignored, overlooked and silenced, The headline of an article says it all, Abortion at “historic low” by all measures, new CDC Study says. What the title minimizes is the fact that 623,471 babies were aborted in 2016. This was the lowest number of abortions in the United States in over 40 years. Having the lives of over 600,00 fetus’ snuffed out prematurely isn’t news worth celebrating. Just like one life lost to the Coronavirus is one too many, one unwanted pregnancy terminated is a sad state of reality. When my wife Leanne’s final pregnancy encountered a series of issues, a specialist suggested aborting our daughter Lydia. Instead of bowing to fear, the Lord protected Leanne and Lydia until her birth almost 16 years ago. While opinions vary depending upon who you ask, the born and unborn matter to God.
