Words of Wisdom from the Past

The two most educational classes that I took in seminary was Church History 1 and 2. The first class focused on the first three centuries of the Christian Church. The second spanned nearly 1,000 years, highlighting the most influential theologians and spiritual leaders of their generation. The one that made the greatest impact on my life was Augustine, the Bishop of Hippo.

And they all drank the same spiritual (supernaturally given) drink. For they drank from a spiritual Rock which followed them [produced by the sole power of God Himself without natural instrumentality], and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with the great majority of them, for they were overthrown and strewn down along [the ground] in the wilderness. Now these things are examples (warnings and admonitions) for us not to desire or crave or covet or lust after evil and carnal things as they did, 1 Corinthians 10:4-6.

If you search the works and writings of Augustine, you’ll find numerous pages of his beliefs on a variety of topics. Augustine’s Call for Unity within the church is one of many influential pieces that are referenced today. Despite any theological differences dominations may have, Augustine called leaders to come together in agreement by uniting under the essentials of the Christian faith.

Therefore let anyone who thinks he stands [who feels sure that he has a steadfast mind and is standing firm], take heed lest he fall [into sin]. 13 For no temptation (no trial regarded as enticing to sin), [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance and that is not [b]adjusted and [c]adapted and belonging to human experience, and such as man can bear]. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to [d]a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently, 1 Corinthians 10:12-13.

The apostle Paul uses past mistakes made by the nation of Israel to warn first century Christians from repeating history. In another letter to the Church of Corinth, Paul reminds this congregation to walk by faith, not by sight, 2 Corinthians 5:17. Remember, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, Albert Einstein. May the words of the Bible provide for you the wisdom that you need so that you can enjoy a prosperous future.

Why Christians May Not Experience God’s Promises

From time to time, sermons will surprise me with a unique take on life. I’ve heard countless messages on living the abundant life promised by Jesus. Yet, when you look throughout the greater church community, many believers find their lives void of experiencing God’s promises in the Bible. Today’s blog hopes to shine light on why this is happening.

I am the Door; anyone who enters in through Me will be saved (will live). He will come in and he will go out [freely], and will find pasture. 10 The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it [b]overflows). 11 I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd risks and lays down His [own] life for the sheep. 12 But the hired servant (he who merely serves for wages) who is neither the shepherd nor the owner of the sheep, when he sees the wolf coming, deserts the flock and runs away. And the wolf chases and snatches them and scatters [the flock], John 10:9-12.

While Albert Einstein is famous for many things that he did, one of his quotes explains why Christians may not experience God’s promises from the Bible in their lives on earth. Einstein once said: “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” Living the abundant life that Jesus promises above requires believers to be all in with their whole heart.

And how can men [be expected to] preach unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who bring glad tidings! [How welcome is the coming of those who preach the good news of His good things!] 16 But they have not all heeded the Gospel; for Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed (had faith in) what he has heard from us? 17 So faith comes by hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the preaching [of the message that came from the lips] of Christ (the Messiah Himself), Romans 10:15-17.

Meanwhile, one Old Testament prophet wrote that people perish for a lack of knowledge, Hosea 4:6. Unless Christians habitually walk with God by studying the Bible daily, you won’t know God’s promises. Subsequently, if you don’t know God’s promises, you won’t actively pray for and claim these promises for your own life. A lack of full devotion and knowledge of the Bible are two main barriers preventing many Christians from experiencing the abundant life of Christ today.

Science and Religion

Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm. This city in the state of Württemberg, Germany is home to one of the brightest minds of my generation. When you consider the more than 300 scientific theories that Einstein published over the course of his life, his vast knowledge ranks up there with the wisdom of Solomon. The secret behind King’s Solomon wisdom came as an answer to prayer. Since the Lord was pleased by this request, people came from all over the world just to hear the rulings made by Solomon.

Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people who cannot be counted for multitude. So give Your servant an understanding mind and a hearing heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and bad. For who is able to judge and rule this Your great people? 10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this, 1 Kings 3:8-10,

One of the most powerful statements made by Einstein comes from an essay published in 1954. In an article entitled Science and Religion, Einstein wrote “Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.” When you read between the lines, this intellectual giant understood the relationship between Science and the Bible. The Creator of Science is the Living Word of God, John 1:1-5. Just as the Bible is designed to reveal truth, Science was created to help human beings understand the laws of nature.

And when I rose to nurse my child, behold, he was dead. But when I had considered him in the morning, behold, it was not the son I had borne. 22 But the other woman said, No! But the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son! And this one said, No! But the dead son is your son, and the living is my son. Thus they spoke before the king. 23 The king said, One says, This is my son that is alive and yours is the dead one. The other woman says, No! But your son is the dead one and mine is the living one. 24 And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword to the king. 25 And the king said, Divide the living child in two and give half to the one and half to the other. 26 Then the mother of the living child said to the king, for she yearned over her son, O my lord, give her the living baby, and by no means slay him. But the other said, Let him not be mine or yours, but divide him. 27 Then the king said, Give her [who pleads for his life] the living baby, and by no means slay him. She is the child’s mother, 1 Kings 3:21-27.

In this age of Cancel Culture, Science that doesn’t support the media’s narrative is disregarded, ignored or suppressed. If you go back to the final year of the Trump presidency, the Coronavirus drug Hydroxychloroquine was attacked, demonized and given false negative reviews because Donald Trump came out and supported it. If Einstein was still alive, he’d likely remind American’s that you can’t have Science without faith in God. I don’t know what the future holds, but Science and the Bible will continue to support one another regardless of what liberal talking points proclaim.
