I Can’t Believe It’s Real!

When I visit my parents over Christmas, my viewing habits usually change, watching a show that one of my sisters, mom or dad enjoys.  On an evening several years ago, my older sister and I began watching an A&E marathon of Cold Case Files.  Though intrigued by the technology, nothing in the first few episodes grabbed my attention.  As I was about to call it a night, a quote from a detective from California blew my mind;  stating emphatically, “yeah, demonic forces are behind many of the serial rapist and killers in our state!”

The context of this statement was in reference to a confession made by a serial rapist and murderer who had recently been detained by police.  According to this man, when he was 13, he was seduced by a demon in a dream.  After many reoccurring dreams, he began to follow a voice in his head to first rape females; then over time kill women after raping them.  Instead of saying the devil made him do it, he said, “a succubus made me do!”  In the awkwardness of the moment, my sister and I looked at each other thinking, I can’t believe that’s real!  At the conclusion of this case, I ran down stairs, entering my parents’ computer room to prove this non-sense wrong.  What I found, changed my perspective on the spiritual realm.

Like the latest State Farm Commercial, you have to be careful about the sites and sources you reference and research on the internet.  Places like Wikipedia, Urban Dictionary and Occult websites can cloud your judgment as well as fill your minds with unwholesome images.  The Meriam-Webster dictionary gives the most accurate account revealing Incubus as male demons who tempt woman into having sex when they sleep and Succubus as female demons who tempt men when they sleep.  However, I wanted to go deeper than a definition to see if there were any case studies or real life encounters that appeared credible.  In my initial search, I discovered 3 with historical documentation.  My findings suggest what some law enforcement officers already believe; there is a direct correlation between demonic forces and violent crimes like rape and murder.

Over my 29 years as a Christian, its clear there are several topics considered taboo for churches to address from the pulpit.  According to Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family Ministries, roughly 25 % of all pastors in America, struggle with some form of pornography.  If one of these men or women tried to speak out by confessing their sin, most if not all would have their positions terminated.  Thus, sexual issues like Incubus and Succubus are never mentioned, swept under the rug with all the other controversial issues.  I’m not a biblical scholar nor do I claim to be one, yet it appears Incubus and Succubus fall under the category of spiritual forces of evil mentioned in Ephesians 6:12.  My objective for this piece is not too promote panic each time you go to bed.  Rather, I want each person to be armed with the power of God’s Word, the Bible, so that you will successfully take your thoughts captive as you sleep, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5.  Remember the promise of 1 John 4:4, “Greater is He who is in you than is he who is in the world!”

Poisoned Minds

Poisons are often odorless, unseen and invade internal organs.  According to Webster, poisons vary from toxic substances, negative influences or elements that corrupt and undermine somebody or something.  According to Romans 8:5-8, the human mind has been poisoned by a sinful nature, contaminating bodies by spoiling souls and tainting one’s thought life.

The other night I was talking with a co-worker as we were working on a project together.  As this man shared details from his past, he pointed out a character flaw of another person.  Prior to our conversation, I didn’t have any preconceived notions about this individual.  However, during my next encounter with the person my co-worker  judged, I began to clearly see this same weakness.  Thus, I allowed my mind to became poisoned, spoiled by someone’s opinion, inhibiting my own ability to think for myself.

If you are looking to make sense of the 2012 Presidential Election results, its actually pretty simple.  President Obama spent nearly 1 billion dollars on ads geared toward attacking the credibility of Mitt Romney.  Based upon the data received by pollsters, these claims, although misleading based upon the context, were effective in convincing 51% of Americans.  If you tell a lie over and over again, eventually people will accept it as a fact or the gospel.

Unfortunately, when you seek to win at all cost, minds become poisoned along the way, leading people to believe whatever they hear or see.  Whether you are discouraged or excited about the outcome of this election, don’t forget the real battle taking place inside your mind.  God has provided believers with the Holy Spirit, Romans 8:9, to stop this poison from spreading and the word of God, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, as an antibody to purify our minds from the disease called sin.  Take your thoughts captive now or you will be taken captive by what other people believe, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5.

Renewing Your Mind

I have heard pastors preach about taking your thoughts captive and renewing your mind, Romans 12:1-2, since high school.  Yet, no one has ever explained to me what this actually means and how it can be done successfully.  Today, I hope to provide biblical insight into why this is necessary and how you can practically renew your mind daily.
The first obvious place to start with is why; why should I renew my mind or take thoughts captive?  Like Eve in Genesis 3:1, Satan is a schemer and the father of all lies, John 8:44.  Nor is Satan passive, 1 Peter 5:8; he is moving from place to place, searching for signs of weakness.  When he finds a helpless soul, Satan pounces like a lion going in for the kill.  If you are not ready for his attacks, Ephesians 6:10-11, you might end up like the individual in the parable of the sower, Matthew 13:19.  Thus, it is clear you must sharpen your mind with the word of God, Joshua 1:8-9.
Once this message get’s through, you need to start small, taking baby steps until you work your way into shape spiritually.  Step 1, examine the first thing you think about when you wake up each morning.  Is it selfish, spiritual or worldly?  Depending upon your thought, you might want to consider starting each new day with a short prayer clearing your mind of all unnecessary data.  Then read a short passage of scripture or a verse to give you an emphasis, thought or vision for the day.  Finally, close this time with a worship song to draw you near to God, Colossians 3:16.
Step 2 begins with mentally preparing yourself for each day.  Remember, Satan will attempt to sow seeds of doubt within your mind.  Therefore, begin to pay close attention to any little thought which enters your mind.  Don’t compromise a bit by disregarding things or letting your mind wander.  Compromise is the language of the devil.  Thus, you may want to write 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 on a note card as a constant reminder to take spiritual authority over your thought life.  Although this sounds easy, this process can be draining or alarming.  Don’t be afraid to keep a daily journal or log book so you won’t repeat the same mistakes day after day.
Finally, the 3rd step to renewing your mind daily is to fill your mind with a minimum of one hour of Christian music each day.  If you don’t own any, there are outlets like Pandora, where you can create your own playlist for free.  When I allow my tired mind to be rejuvenated by uplifting lyrics, I am a completely different person, energetic and connected to the Holy Spirit, Galatians 5:25.  However, when I substitute this with talk radio during the day and the television at night, I become vulnerable, Ephesians 4:26.  One of benefits to renewing your mind is you can limit the number of spiritual footholds the enemy has over your life.  Before you give this a try, test everything, 1 Thessalonians 5:21.  Once you begin to renew your mind, let me know how your spiritual journey goes.
