Places Where Dreams Die

According to the 1993 film, Rudy Ruettiger was an average athlete and middle of the road student with dreams that seemed far fetched.  Thus, Rudy took a job at a local Steel Mill, buying some time.  When his best friend Pete dies in an accident at the mill, Rudy finds himself at a crossroads.  During the funeral Rudy comes to the realization, “if I don’t leave now my dream will never happen,” dying at a dead end job.  Standing at a Greyhound Bus Station, Rudy’s father shares a series of ungodly beliefs, filled with negativity, hoping his son stays.  Deep down Rudy Ruettiger sensed that remaining in his hometown was another place where dreams can die.

For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity; but God is the one you must fear, Ecclesiastes 5:7.

Meanwhile, Homer Hickam faced his own set of struggles illustrated in the 1999 movie October Sky.  Playing the role of the younger brother, Homer could never escape the shadow of big brother Jim, a football star destined for a college scholarship.  Despite his efforts, Homer was unable to compete with his brother’s popularity or talents.  After his father’s work related injury, Homer drops out of high school to become a coal miner attempting to follow in the footsteps of his dad. Yet, Homer’s new job couldn’t quench a passion for rockets.  Fueled by his teacher Miss Riley, Homer leaves the occupation where his dream would have died in the mine to participate in a science fair that altered the course of his life.

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, Ephesians 3:20.

Unfortunately, most people fail to become famous, rich or successful, ending up in a place where their dreams disappear.  Some are forced by financial constrains to keep multiple jobs just to survive, fighting a losing battle with debt throughout life.  Others endure destructive relationships that often end with another mouth to feed, divorce or years of regret.  Within all these distractions, time flies by causing dreams to be altered, downgraded or pushed back until nothing is achieved.  If you have ever reached this point like me, you need an inspirational friend like Pete who speaks words of encouragement.  Or a mentor like Miss Riley who will uplift your spirits, challenge you and instill in you perseverance to press on through places where dreams die until you taste the abundant life Jesus promises, John 10:10.

Taking A Back Seat To Your Children

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noWdKwHCJA0

In my younger days, naive and immature, I cared more about my men’s softball team than my oldest son’s T-Ball game.  Thus, as other men were coaching and influencing my son James, I got lost in trying to relive and hold on to my youth.  Learning the hard way, I realized Father Time couldn’t be beaten before I took a back seat where my children could be in the forefront.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, Philippians 2:3.

Unfortunately, too many young men never see the light, blinded by selfish ambition.  Fueled by pride, egos cause adults to remain the center of attention, long after their own high school graduation.  While hanging out in bars reminiscing about the Glory Days, far too many children are growing up without a role model to emulate.  Subsequently, teenagers often look toward pop culture to find meaning in life, only to be disappointed in the long run.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full, John 10:10.

After hearing the phrase “its better to give than receive” countless times throughout life, I finally tasted a piece of this fruit over the weekend.  As a proud parent on Sunday, watching my children all place in the top 3 of their age group, with James earning first, 11th overall, in the 2015 Blue Hen 5K, I realized all those times I went jogging with my kids finally paid off.  Although I was the only one in the family who didn’t medal, it didn’t matter.  I found joy in taking a back seat to my children, observing each one begin to find their niche, place and calling in life.  If you haven’t taken your seat, find one soon.

They Found the Secret

Dr. V. Raymond Edman was the president of Wheaton College, a Christian school in Illinois.  Before his death, God put a burden on Dr. V’s heart to study the abundant life, mentioned by Jesus in John 10:10.  This quest led to the creation of a series of short biographies from godly men and women throughout history.  In the end, this compellation was comprised into the book, They Found the Secret.

From my own personal experiences, I had to go on missionary trips in America to uncover the secret of abundant life.  Whether it was inner city Philadelphia with City Team Ministries, South Carolina and Tennessee through Group Ministries or taking youth groups to North Carolina and Kentucky as a youth pastor, the only living examples of this joy for life were found in the most unlikely places.  I have met widows, homeless and dirt poor individuals who were grateful for every thing they had, the clothes on their back and a place to lay their heads.  Although I thought God wanted me to come and repair the homes, trailers and shacks of the needy, the Holy Spirit led me on these trips to restore my own life.

Maybe this is why Jesus includes Matthew 6:19-24 in his sermon on the mount.  Unfortunately, money complicates things, often changing people for the worse.  Like the words of Revelation 2:4, addressed to the Ephesians, money can tempt Christians to lose their first love, exchanging money for an intimate relationship with God.  Personally, I don’t have an answer for the abundant life, but I do know where it lies.  Somewhere between Leviticus 26:1-4, Psalm 119:9-11 and John 10, this abundant life is accessible by grace through faith in Christ, Ephesians 2:1-10.  Like the apostle Paul’s words nearly 2000 years ago, “press on to take hold of that which Christ Jesus took hold of me,” Philippians 3:12.  May you and I each discover and experience this abundant life some day soon!
