Making Sense of Violence

For the last 2 days, experts have made an appearance on all the cable news networks to give their opinion on why the tragedy in Aurora Colorado occurred.  These analysts have discussed the shooter’s psychological state, his intellect and most recently James Holmes’ desire to be a real life Joker during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises.  However, no one has had the moxie to address the spiritual dimension of the Century 16, Theater 8 shooting.

Based upon the books I have read over the last 3 years and the case studies I have researched, one of the most obvious explanations for this senseless act is demonic influences.  Current shows like Ghost Hunters examine the extremes of demonic influences, yet history provides traces of evidence that violence can be conceived from demons.  Genesis 4:7 contains a Babylonian word, translated crouching in the New International Version.  This word suggests that a demon planted a thought to kill into Cain’s mind, prior to murdering his brother Abel.

Jesus, the son of God, makes an unusual, yet interesting comment in Matthew 16:23.  After Peter makes a public confession of who Jesus really is, Jesus calls Peter Satan.  I believe Jesus uses this imagery in verse 23 to help Peter see that he is beginning to think like Satan.  Meanwhile, before Judas betrays Jesus it says in scripture that Satan entered Judas.  The apostle Paul in his letter to Corinth urges believers to take their minds captive, 2 Corinthians 10:5.  All of these passages from the Bible open the possibility that if an individual isn’t careful, evil thoughts can be planted deep within their mind which unfortunately are often acted out in the form of violence.
