S.A.N.S. Episode 107: Someone Like You

Twelve Stones is one of the first groups recommended to me by a student in one of my first senior high classes at Red Lion Christian Academy. Twelve Stones combines a classical rock sound with an occasional heavy metal beat. The Behind the Scars album contains a couple of ballads that remind me of secular bands that I listened to in high school.

From now on let no person trouble me [by [l]making it necessary for me to vindicate my apostolic authority and the divine truth of my Gospel], for I bear on my body the [brand] marks of the Lord Jesus [the wounds, scars, and other outward evidence of persecutions—these testify to His ownership of me]! – Galatians 6:17

Someone Like You starts off slow, but transitions into a head bobbing beat. I wouldn’t call this a ballad, but it’s more of a hybrid with a chorus that speaks of finding someone who doesn’t disappoint. From a human standpoint, every day is filled with disappointment as sooner or later someone or something will let you down. This is what makes God special; a supernatural being who saves you from yourself.

The Spiritual Infection

In their 2012 album, 12 Stones sing about the infection which exists in our world in their song Infected.  According to Saint Augustine. this infection began as a result of the fall of mankind depicted in Genesis 3.  Like a fatal disease, this spiritual infection has worsened with each generation.

God created man to live forever on earth, Genesis 3:3.  Unfortunately, the consequence of original sin initiated this spiritual infection into the flesh of Adam and Eve, Genesis 3:16-19.  Though their lives lasted over 900 years, internally this infection was apparent.  Their first child Cain, killed their second child, Abel due to a spirit of envy and jealousy which consumed Cain until he finally murdered his brother.

As I try to do the right thing daily, this infection attacks me like the apostle Paul describes in Galatians 5:15-18.  While this infection is terminal to our flesh, there is a spiritual cure.  Like a surgeon performing surgery, people must crucify their sinful nature with its passions and desires, Galatians 2:20.  Although doing this does not secure us a worry free life, it does open the door to secure your eternal destiny, 1 John 5:13.  Jesus is the remedy to this spiritual infection, like a chewable tablet of truth found in Colossians 3:15-17.

Beneath The Scars

While most people have kept up with technology, downloading songs from I Tunes, I still believe in purchasing CD’s.  Yes, those round things that you put in that device you have to plug in and turn on before you can actually hear music.  Any way, as I was listening to 12 Stones, one of the new albums I bought for my birthday, I was led into a spirit of worship.

Their album Beneath The Scars touched my heart, sending me into an amazing state of praise.  The song That Changes Everything highlights the meaning behind the name of this 12 Stones album.  When you consider the suffering Christ endured, Hebrews 12:4, for you and for me, its a game changer!  Beneath the scars mentioned in Matthew 27:27-40, we have a Savior who conquered sin and death, 1 Corinthians 15:52-57.

If you dig deeper, shifting from Christ to your own life, we all have scars.  Some from surgery’s, others from birth defects as well as those emotional scars undetected by the human eye.  Yet, they are there, in everyone whether you like it or not.  In a way, we are all like jars of clay, 2 Corinthians 4:1-12.  Despite our imperfections, our weaknesses and any pain we are still holding on to, there is healing Beneath The Scars, 2 Corinthians 4:13-15!
