The Word or the World

Most people have at least one person or a few people that they hold up on a pedistel.  These people that you look up to may be the real deal, secretly hiding a specific sin or they are living a double life.  However, regardless of how godly someone may appear, if anyone goes a day or two without the Word of God, they will quickly begin to think like the world.

I am a kind of person who only talks when I feel like I have something important to say.  The days that I share the most are usually due to inspiration I received from scripture or insight from a book that I read after work.  The times in my life that I withdraw from others is when I am not consistently reading scripture or spending time studying an interesting book.  What I am trying to say is that without the Word, my life is boring like salt which loses its flavor, Matthew 5:13-16.

This is why the apostle Paul told the Ephesians to be very careful how they live.  It takes to lifetime to build a legacy.  It takes hard work and dedication to develop a good reputation.  However, it only takes a day or two without being in fellowship with God to make a bad decision.  In an instant, everything that you worked for can be gone, tarnished forever.  Therefore, do not let the sun go down today without spending time in the Word.  As Moses said in his farewell address to Israel, choose life or the world will drag you down.

Your Very Best

In the middle of His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus makes a startling statement.  “Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect, Matthew 5:48.”  Jesus is most likely attempting to do one of two things.  First, as Matthew addresses a Jewish audience, Jesus is trying to reveal to the Jews in this crowd of people that this is impossible to do.  Thereby convicting the audience of any thought that anyone of them would be capable of following the Torah perfectly.

On the other hand, Jesus knew that no one listening would be mentally or physically able to accomplish such a task.  Thus it is possible that Jesus is simply trying to say to a mostly illiterate audience, try your very best each and every day, then trust that God will do the rest.  In the movie Facing the Giants, there is a similar message in the Death Crawl Scene.  The leader of the team had given up on the season, allowing a losing mentally to possess his teammates.  The head coach uses the Death Crawl as a teachable moment to see what someone is capable of when they do their very best.

As I reflect upon the last 6 months of my life, there are many things that distract me from doing my very best.  Watching sports and the television in general can suck you in each night, causing me to lose focus of what’s really important in life.  Idle time as well as resting after a long day’s work is nice, but can become contagious if you allow you body to stop moving as soon as you get home.  Finally, the one things that prevents many people from even trying new adventures, careers or things is a lack of confidence.  Failure often breeds a losing mindset.  However, in Christ, Philippians 4:13, anything and everything is possible.  Therefore, tomorrow morning when you wake up, try your very best and allow God to do the rest.

Prevailing Winds

For a golfer, prevailing winds can be great, causing golf balls to go further than humanly possible.  At a high school golf practice, I once hit a 335 yard drive uphill with a 65 miles per hour gust at my back.  However, if the prevailing wind is too strong, you can end up with British Open like conditions preventing golf balls from coming to rest on golf greens, constantly wobbling, moving slightly back and forth.

From a spiritual perspective, prevailing winds impact where you will end up in life.  During the last 6 months, there have been at least 6 times when I thought, okay now I know what God wants me to do.  A few days later, the door which I thought was open, closed abruptly, creating a pattern of confusion, questioning and uncertainty.  However, if Jesus could calm the storm in John 6:16-21, it is clear that God controls the weather with Jesus as the Master over the elements of the earth.

As the winds of change continue to blow in my life, one passage of scripture strikes like a cord daily.  Proverbs 19:21 is a like a light, bringing me back to reality.  I have had many plans in life and will likely have additional plans God willing.  However, the prevailing winds of the Holy Spirit will move me away from my plan towards God’s plan.  Regardless of what I do or try, in the end, the Lord’s purpose will prevail.

Living in a No Absolutes Society

An absolute means unequivocal, possessing unlimited power, to add emphasis or unmodified.  Unfortunately, this word is quickly disappearing from the American culture.  Absolutes are vanishing as lies, half truths and opinions have taken over the media, air waves and everyday conversations.

Meanwhile, facts are becoming obsolete like the type writer, record player and telephone booth.  Politicians are repeating the same lies day after day hoping if they say it enough people will believe them.  Sports radio celebrities critique anyone about everything without examining their own lives in a do as I say not as I do arena.  Finally, television shows continue to copy one another, slide down the same immoral slippery slope as bored viewers keep clicking their remotes from channel to channel trying to find something meaningful without much success.

Like in the days of the prophet Ezekiel, God is looking for people who will go against the societal flow, stand up for Christ by standing in the gap created by a lack of absolutes, Ezekiel 22:30.  The sad truth is Ezekiel could not find an Israelite who was willing to make a stand during his life.  What about now?  Who will rise out of the ashes of our fallen world and join Christians like Tim Tebow?  Time is ticking away.  Act now before its too late to save our country and its Christian heritage.

Reliving and Changing History

On April 3rd, 1974, one of the most devastating tornadoes on record hit Xenia, Ohio.  Known as Terrible Tuesday, a series of tornadoes tore a path of destruction across of the United States and Canada, killing 33 people in Xenia alone.  In the documentary Tornado Chronicles this event served as a wake up call to change how to predict and warn residents of potential deadly tornadoes.

If you have plans to visit Columbus, Ohio or Cincinnati, Xenia is located just 15 minutes north of Interstate 71, off of state highway 68.  This will allow you to relive the past and learn how Xenia came together as a community to rebuild.  Out of the rubble, this city came together as neighbors, helping one another put the pieces of their lives back together.

If you want to change history, don’t forget to visit Wilmington, Ohio, 15 minutes south of Interstate 71 off of state highway 68.  While Wilmington missed this famous tornado, this city faced its own crisis when a local car manufacture closed its plant which employed several thousand residents.  The Wilmington House of Prayer, located on Main Street served as a place for residents to lay down their burdens by lifting them up to the Lord.  This city is a modern day example of how prayer can transform a community.  Take a spiritual vacation to these 2 locations today!

The Prayer House

Featured on Glenn Beck’s television show in December of 2010 and most recently on GBTV, the Prayer House in Wilmington, Ohio has been the supernatural source behind the recent transformation of this South Central Ohio city.  Located on 63 West Main Street, you have to access the Prayer House off of Locust Street, just north of Main, since Main Street is one way going in the opposite direction.  Open 24 hours a day, the prayers of the saints praying at this location have been a catalyst for numerous miracles in this city and throughout the country.

Inside, there are 3 major rooms which greet you.  The first room inside the entrance is dedicated to prayer, with large colorful chalkboards full of prayer slots, prayer requests and Bible verses to claim while you pray.  Each chalk board appears to have a different prayer focus, with an area for praise and worship near the back of this section.  The second room is dedicated to art, when young and old people can be still before the Lord and allow the Holy Spirit to inspire you to draw.  There is a box on the floor to put your finished pieces of art which are hung throughout this fluorescent room as well as a table with decorative rocks used to put in your pocket to pray for a specific person.  Finally, the backroom is like a Christian bookstore.  This area includes a public library full of books on healing and prayer as well as products you can purchase to keep this ministry alive.

Like most ministries, the Prayer House requires faith.  One of the slogans on a brochure I received talks about burning with passion for the Lord and for prayer.  If each city or spiritual leader could visit this place, catch their vision and move in prayer, this country and our world would be a much better place to live.  Practice James 5:16 in your own house and you will receive healing!

Sandusky

Every once in a while, there is a story which makes headline news that is disturbing.  An event whose impact on others changes their lives for others.  Unfortunately, for Joe Paterno, his life will be forever linked to Jerry Sandusky.  Sometimes not doing anything is as big of a sin as the act itself.

As the jury made their verdict last night in the Jerry Sandusky Case, sometimes the final decision is not what it should be.  Matthew 18:5-6 magnifies how God feels about children.  Anyone who harms a child in a way that causes them to stumble should punished.  Jesus suggests that a person who falls under this category should be hung and thrown into the ocean with an anchor carrying them to the bottom of the sea.

No one can understand the mind of God as Job found out in the Old Testament.  However, the Bible can be confusing at times as you wrestle between God’s forgiveness and judgment.  The only thing clear about last night’s decision is that child are at peace knowing one sexual predator is behind bars.  Pray that those still on the streets will be convicted of their sin or be found out and caught before anyone else is harmed.

Reaching Out

Yesterday I went to a local dollar store to collect some items for an upcoming road trip.  As I was there, I ran into a woman who was disabled.  Despite her condition, she was a proud worker, helping me find one of the items on my list.  When I left, the Holy Spirit reminded me of the importance to reaching out to people in need.

There was a story yesterday about a 73 year old bus monitor who was being bullied and harassed by middle school students in a you tube video that has gone viral.  Unfortunately, no where in the video did any of the other students stop this attack.  No one intervened or said that’s enough, you’ve taking this too far.  Instead of reaching out, many people in our society has become bystanders, watching on the sidelines, afraid or too lazy to get involved.

Early in his sermon on the mount, Jesus addresses the importance of being salt and light in our world, Matthew 5:13-16.  If Christians continue to practice syncretism, blending into their culture, their salt will lose their saltiness.  Meanwhile, their light will become blurred, causing non-Christians to become confused and fall.  Therefore, we must change our mindset, meditate on God’s Word and pray for opportunities to reach out to those in need.

Relief

Back in the 1980’s, there was a famous series of commercials to help people deal with and overcome heart burn.  The product was called Rolaids.  The slogan for the commercial was Rolaids spells relief, ROLAIDS.

The Bible refers to a different kind of heart burn known as choli.  This Hebrew word is used throughout the Old Testament to describe sorrows.  Choli actually means grief, but it refers to mental and emotional pain someone is experiencing.  When choli appears in a text, it can also mean an affliction, casualty or weakness.  Regardless of your current emotion, physical or spiritual state, everyone is in desperate need of relief.

In Jeremiah 31, the weeping prophet is referring to a weary soul, someone who is languishing.  While God often gave Jeremiah bad news to report to Israel, this chapter includes a message of relief.  “I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint,” Jeremiah 31:25.  In a world of constant heartbreaks and disappointments, God is alive and well seeking to satisfy and replenish our souls.  Therefore, the next time you experience heart burn, relief is just a prayer away!

Accumulating Stress

I tend to be an easy going person, letting stress or worry roll off my back.  However, as each day passes without a call, email or sign about my future, stress is beginning to amass.  As bills and debt accumulate daily, I feel as if I am powerless as the next wave of stress comes crashing through, sucking me into an under tow of worry.

If anyone understood stress, it was Moses in Exodus 18.  Before Jethro intervened, Moses was overwhelmed by his responsibilities as the only judge in all of Israel, Exodus 18:13-16.  From morning til evening, 6 days of week, Moses tried to settle any and every kind of dispute throughout the land.  Finally, Jethro steps in to help elevate the stress Moses was experiencing, Exodus 18:17-23.  The solution was simple: delegate responsibility to others, train and equip qualified people to become petit judges and rule as the Supreme Judge, taking only the difficult cases.

In the New Testament, there is a solution to accumulating stress, take it to the cross.  Although, it is not as easy as it appears.  Its one thing to say you are going to leave your burdens at the cross, its another thing to actually let go.  Just as Moses obeyed the words of Jethro in Exodus 18:24-26, I need to submit to Jesus’ request in Matthew 11:28-30.  As people wave the white flag and surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ, the tide will wash accumulating stress out to sea.  As the group David and the Giants once sang, Let Go and Let God!
