Inspiration Behind How Deep is Your Love:
Producer Robert Stigwood approached the Bee Gees about creating songs for the upcoming movie Saturday Night Fever. The Bee Gees wanted to compose a song that would transcend the disco era with a ballad that would resonate with individuals searching for a deep and intimate love. Once How Deep is Your Love was finished, the initial plan was for this song to be sung by Yvonne Elliman. However, the Bee Gees ended up keeping this song for themselves, too special to let go.
Week 3 Theme:
Growing in love is a sign of maturity as young individuals begin to realize that love is more than the physical aspect of a relationship. Growing in love is not just developing a teachable spirit. Rather, growing in love is becoming vulnerable with your partner, eager to find out what love is and how you can daily display love.
Biblical Application:
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 14 Do everything in love, 1 Corinthians 16:13-14.
Exegesis of How Deep is Your Love:
I know your eyes in the morning sun
I feel you touch me in the pouring rain
And the moment that you wander far from me
I want to feel you in my arms again
And you come to me on a summer breeze
Keep me warm in your love, then you softly leave
And it’s me you need to show
The Bee Gees appear to be referring to a significant other who they see first thing in the morning after waking up. Whatever the weather, I can feel your touch. As soon as you’re gone, I want to feel your presence. When a cool summer breeze touches me, I am reminded of your love. This man wants to know if she feels the same.
How deep is your love, how deep is your love
How deep is your love?
I really mean to learn
‘Cause we’re living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they all should let us be
We belong to you and me
How great is your commitment to our relationship? I want to know where you stand and the degree of your love. Don’t let other people tell you that you’re crazy or need to be with someone else. Don’t listen to the outside noise all around us. We belong together.
I believe in you
You know the door to my very soul
You’re the light in my deepest, darkest hour
You’re my savior when I fall
And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do
And it’s me you need to show
There is a belief of joint love. This stems from intimate and vulnerable moments shared. Your life is like a light that shines through, like a Savior who picks me up when I fall. Although I may not always show that I care, deep down you know that I do. Perhaps out of insecurity, he wants his girlfriend to display her love for him.
How deep is your love, how deep is your love
How deep is your love?
I really mean to learn
‘Cause we’re living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they all should let us be
We belong to you and me
This chorus serves as a reminder that love is learned, especially when others question the relationship that you are in.
And you come to me on a summer breeze
Keep me warm in your love, then you softly leave
And it’s me you need to show
It’s unclear if this woman is busy following her career or is unstable as her feelings change. This man is looking for assurance 0f their relationship.
How deep is your love, how deep is your love
How deep is your love?
I really mean to learn
‘Cause we’re living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they all should let us be
We belong to you and me
Perhaps, other people are giving her bad advice, seeking to end their relationship. Whatever the cause, this man believes that they belong together.
How deep is your love, how deep is your love
I really mean to learn
‘Cause we’re living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they all should let us be
We belong to you and me
How deep is your love, how deep is your love
I really mean to learn
‘Cause we’re living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they all should let us be
We belong to you and me
Ending this song with 3 repetitive choruses appears to serve as a call to stick it out through the tough times. regardless of what others may say or think.
Final Thoughts:
In every relationship that I have entered, there always seemed to be one person who possessed a different level of commitment. The individual who was less committed may prolong a relationship until something better comes along. The man behind How Deep is Your Love is the one who is trying to preserve this relationship. Part of growing in love is developing an unswerving will to love your partner. The source of this love comes from God according to one of Jesus’ disciples, 2 Peter 1:3-4. This Spirit of love has kept my marriage alive the past 30 years.
