Engaging Our Culture: September 7-The Honor Code

Video of the Day: Clip from the 1992 movie “School Ties”

Bible Verse of the Day:

The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin. Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out, Proverbs 10:8-9.

Biblical Connection:

Like a scene out of modern-day college recruiting in this age of NIL (name, image, likeness), David Greene is given a scholarship to attend an elite prep high school. The only problem is that David is a Jew at a Catholic School during a time when antisemitism was prevalent. When a cheat sheet to an exam is found on the classroom floor, David is falsely accused of cheating, siding with a Catholic.

People traveled from all over the world to hear the wisdom of King Solomon. Today’s passage highlights the concept of an honor code. The wise accept God’s commands are right and true. Yet, those who try to talk themselves out of trouble will be found out. Therefore, Solomon urges his son to walk in integrity, avoiding crooked paths that will be exposed in the end.

Cheaters don’t believe that God is all seeing. Subsequently, under the cover of darkness, they think that they can get away with this crooked path. May today’s scene and message inspire you to live an honorable life, keeping God’s commands in your heart to avoid acts of sin, Psalm 119:11.
