Relief

Back in the 1980’s, there was a famous series of commercials to help people deal with and overcome heart burn.  The product was called Rolaids.  The slogan for the commercial was Rolaids spells relief, ROLAIDS.

The Bible refers to a different kind of heart burn known as choli.  This Hebrew word is used throughout the Old Testament to describe sorrows.  Choli actually means grief, but it refers to mental and emotional pain someone is experiencing.  When choli appears in a text, it can also mean an affliction, casualty or weakness.  Regardless of your current emotion, physical or spiritual state, everyone is in desperate need of relief.

In Jeremiah 31, the weeping prophet is referring to a weary soul, someone who is languishing.  While God often gave Jeremiah bad news to report to Israel, this chapter includes a message of relief.  “I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint,” Jeremiah 31:25.  In a world of constant heartbreaks and disappointments, God is alive and well seeking to satisfy and replenish our souls.  Therefore, the next time you experience heart burn, relief is just a prayer away!
