While doing research for one of my Bible Classes, I discovered 5 distinct reasons why God created music:
1. To praise God with your voice, Psalm 150. In fact, the very reason God created us was to praise Him.
2. To express the marvelous things God has done, Psalm 98:1-4. Throughout the Old Testament, there is an overriding theme, to remind people of what God has done in the past. Moses devoted an entire book of the Bible, Deuteronomy, meaning second law, so that people living today would not forget.
3. To personally thank God, Psalm 118:1-5. The apostle Paul adds to this principle in Philippians 4:6-7 as does James, Jesus’ earthly brother in James 1:18.
4. To bring us joy and gladness, Psalm 118:24. While modern day ballads tend to be sad, music was designed by God to give us an emotional boost, often lifting our spirits.
5. To soothe your soul, 1 Samuel 16:14-15. Finally, when King Saul became filled with a spirit of anger and rage, the sweet sound of David’s harp led these spirits to flee, helping Saul return to his normal state of mind.
During the last few months, in my most depressed state, a song on the radio, music on my computer or a song from my MP3 Player has soothed my soul numerous times. While those people who know me recognize my obscure collection of music, I am always searching for the next soothing song. Although Lucifer may indeed be a fallen angel of music, God’s glorious power can penetrate our souls to minister to heavy burdened people. As Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30, “come to me, all who are weary and heavy burdened, for I will give you rest!”
